Right, one may be aware that the Xbox Live is throwing a bit of a celebration in commemoration of five years of existence. What may not be known is the the Xbox Live Arcade is hitting not one but two milestones this month, two years of existence and its 100th game. It has not been made clear yet just how these milestones will be handled just yet but the fine folks at XBLArcade have heard some murmurings towards this.

Having launched on November 22, 2005, the Xbox 360 and, by proxy, XBLA in its current rendition are approaching their second birthday next week. Over the last two years XBLA has certainly seen its share of ups and downs. Luckily for those of us who enjoy the service and follow the new releases, the ups have definitely outweighed the downs. Being able to assume that one, if not two releases will come out each week is something we could not do when the service was in its infancy.

An interesting side note is that assuming that Screwjumper! is this week's only release, next week will also see the 100th title to be released on the service. So to sum it all up, next week is not only the second celebration of XBLA’s birth but also the launch of its centennial title!

Given all this history, and the chance to boast their accomplishments, what are the chances that Microsoft is going to allow these two events to pass without giving us something momentous?

A better question is what game could possibly celebrate the service in the way Microsoft is looking to celebrate? The game would have to have its roots firmly planted in XBLA history while still being a title that almost every fan has been dreaming of.

An inside source whom I hold very highly has let slip that MS is very aware of these milestones and is planning something HUGE for us.

If everything goes well (it seems everyone has to worry about certification these days), next week we will be playing the “true” sequel to the biggest XBLA title to date.

Any guesses as to what this title might be? :)

Well, it all sounds very interesting, though Microsoft could just as easily squander this milestones in various ways, such as giving the 100th game slot to something like Shrek-N-Roll or Spongebob, or just playing it same old same old during the birthday week.
Anyway, if I were to wager a guess at to what this mystery title would be, well, I would say
it would be Geometry Wars 4.

Let the guessing game commence thusly.

I use my Messenger pad all the time. Entering names, sending text messages while in a game lobby, chatting on MSN. Don't you use it for that? Also, I wouldn't want a game that relies heavily on the keyboard. Poor controller users would have a fit.

Yeah I use it for those things, but I want to use it for games. They should have included some sort of free Word Shoot-type game with it.

Hardly going "all out" for title 100 I would say.

New Arcade Releases
posted Monday, November 12, 2007 9:00 AM by Tom Eberspecher

Monday is upon us again bearing the sweet fruits that are Xbox LIVE Arcade titles. Two new titles grace Arcade this week: Shrek N' Roll and Screwjumper. This week is extra special though. Why you ask? It's because Screwjumper marks the 100th Arcade title released. Pretty amazing for a service that's just over two years old!

From the media alert:

Navigate through 16 challenging mazes across four unique environments in Far Far Away’s newest competitive tournament. Test your tilting and rolling skills in Single Player mode, challenge others in Versus mode, or work together with friends and family in 2-player local Co-op mode. The game will be available worldwide with the exception of Korea and Japan this Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. PST) for 800 Microsoft Points, and is rated “E” (Everyone – Comic Mischief) by the ESRB.

“Screwjumper!” allows players to compete with friends locally via a split-screen mode, as well as over Xbox LIVE. The game will be available worldwide with the exception of Korea and Japan this Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. PST) for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated “E 10+” by the ESRB.

Shrek N' Roll! Shrek N' Roll! Shrek N' Roll!

5 years of XBL has snowballed onto this momentous occasion :lol

Well, actually it is Screwjumper! that gets the milestone slot, but this Shrek N' Roll makes sense for other reasons, as in guess what movie gets released on the DVD this week. Marketing tie-ins and all that.

On to more fun things: man how awesome is Pac Man CE? I bought it a good while ago, played it some, but rediscovered it yesterday. Played a game in every mode and decided I like the extra modes 2 and 3 best. You can quickly gather points there because of the decrease in board size and high frequency of power pellets. What I did was concentrate on one piece of the board and only go to the opposite side to get some power pellets. Man how cool does this game get when you can collect the crown over and over? My points suddenly skyrocketed and I was close to 400k, just when the time limit hit. I can see myself playing these modes more over time to just get high scores.
The one mode that's maybe a bit too tense for me is the nighttime challenge. When all the pellets are gone and ghosts are chasing you... eep :p

If Shrek-n-Roll was made by some obscure indie developer with no license I guarantee you all would be going coocoo for cocoa puffs over it. I'm serious, by the way. It's actually a pretty good game with an interesting play mechanic and good controls. No way in hell is it worth 800 points but it's quite a lot of fun.

God, I'm recommending a Shrek game. I think the Nyquil just kicked in.

Carcassonne will be free for 48h after Thursday 15th!

Microsoft also added some announcements about the fifth anniversary of the launch of Xbox Live on November 15. In celebration, Microsoft will be offering a free download of the Xbox Live Arcade game Carcassonne (Hexic 2 in Korea) starting at 12:01am EST November 15. The game will be free to all subscribers for 48 hours. Also, all subscribers who have been a member of Xbox Live since 2002 will receive 500 MS Points for free.

Definitely a great gift! Hopefully they will continue this tradition every year.

Too bad my 360 is in repair right now, ugh. I'm trying to figure out how I will get Carassonne if my 360 doesn't get back to me in time.

Any ideas?

I wonder if you could log onto live on your recovered gamertag on a friend's console and download the game.
When you got your repaired machine back maybe they would mark that you owned the game and you could get it again.
Depends on how the 48 hours thing works, if they just unlock all payments for the game then turn it back on again I guess that might not work..dunno

This sounds like it should work.

If they haven't changed the rules, that will work... I did the same for Texas Hold'em when it was free for a while and it worked.

Nice to see that Microsoft did remember that a celebration is supposed to be going on with the XBLA, anyway word from the Joystick is that Tim Schafer would love to do an XBLA.

Tim Schafer would 'love' to make an XBLA game

We, like all good and wise people, love Tim Schafer. What we don't love is having to wait years between fresh infusions of Double Fine goodness. So it gave us no small amount of pleasure to hear that while speaking at the 2007 IGDA Leadership Forum, Schafer said he'd love to make a small XBLA game, even though he didn't have one in the works.

"We talk about making Xbox Live Arcade games all the time. Who doesn't want to make Xbox Live Arcade games?" he said. "It's like when you see a Great Dane taking a giant shit and then you see a poodle taking a little Tootsie Roll shit. The poodle is so cute, but at the end of the day you're still picking up shit. Seriously though, we'd love to make Xbox Live Arcade games, but we're really busy now." ... We're not exactly sure what you meant by that, Tim. But we're fairly sure we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

OFLC Update:

Sensible World of Soccer
SCHIZOID
TRIGGERHEART EXCELICA

have now been rated by the OFLC.

However, some new unannounced games seem to have cropped up too! They have been applied by Microsoft, so they can almost definitely by XBLA games. These include:

LODE RUNNER (By Tozai Inc)
THE BULLWINKLE SHOW (By PinballFX's Zen Studios)

Dun dun dun!

Fuck. I guess that means Ikaruga will be the last to be released, and might not even make 2007. Fuck. :(

I hope this Lode Runner is something like Hudson's Battle Lode Runner. Also, is anybody else getting more and more worried about the presence of licensed games on the service?

Yea, about Ikaruga, that game is most likely coming out in early 2008. Also, out of the TGS Six, I think it will still beat out Rez HD for release on the XBLA.

Not at all. Licensed games haven't had a negative impact on retail games, why would they hurt downloadable titles?

I doubt so. Rez HD is already ready to go it looks like. After all it has an official page of its own on the JP Xbox360 site.

You are looking at it from the wrong angle, I mean seeing an increase in the amount of licensed titles, yea, they may be god for sales, but they usually end up being shit. Speaking of which, how bad is Shrek-N-Roll?

A bit. But then again these are usually from devs and/or pubs that I don't really expect anything from (or know of) so hopefully it's not to the exclusion of the great, unique releases that revitalized XBLA in the first place. Have to say I've been much less excited about the service in the past few months, though part of that is attributable to the glut of releases elsewhere. All will be forgiven once Rez is released.
