Carcossane is simpler then I thought it was, but at the same time it's a bit more addictive. I'm thinking of buying an expansion just to give them a little money.

Aye, much the same. Although I'm sure MS have compensated them to an appropriate level.

Yeah there was a time there where me and gowans went like 8 weeks, buying each game every week and playing it right at release.

I just haven't been interested in the stuff as of late. Castle Crashers can't get here soon enough.

Halo 3 Map Pack, Undertow, and MSN Games Sale
posted Monday, November 19, 2007 9:00 AM by Tom Eberspecher

In honor of the shopping madness that is just four days away, we are running a three-for-one news special today without the need to be at a store at 5am. It's because we care.

First and foremost, we have just announced that there were be a Halo 3 map pack releasing on December 11th. From the media alert:

Available for 800 Microsoft Points exclusively on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, each map presents a totally different play style. Standoff’s symmetrical valley, with its entrenched bases and fields of boulders is ideal for mid-sized objective and Slayer game types, while Rat’s Nest’s vast, labyrinthine passages bring something new to the “Halo” multiplayer experience: an indoor vehicle paradise, strongly influenced by the Campaign mode, ideal for big team battles. Finally, Foundry is the ultimate Forge map – players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, place stairways, walls, bridges and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map they can think of.

And coming out this Wednesday on Xbox LIVE Arcade is Undertow.

"Undertow" redefines aquatic based shooters through a mix of high-definition graphics, intuitive controls and multiple modes of game play action. "Undertow" features a story driven single player campaign, on and offline co-op, and multiplayer for up to 16 players over Xbox LIVE. Players battle for control of the oceans as one of three selectable races, each with four unique, upgradeable units. "Undertow" will be available worldwide this Wednesday for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E10+.

Speaking of holiday sales, MSN Games is running a sale later this week. From the media alert:

Oh, those were just posted on Achieve360Points.com, so I thought they were new... >_<
Usually, when they post an achievement list for a game, then said game should be released very soon...

The link to that Thanksgaming sale seems broken. So am I right in assuming this is for PC owners only and has nothing to do with XBLA? Should probably snip it out entirely, lest people get the wrong idea.

Well they did mention MSN Games next to sale including the title.

Bah I thought SWOS was a cert :(

Undertow looks interesting, Co-op + mulit too :D
... but like I said, Achieve360Points.com has the achievement list up, and if they do that, then the game must be out soon...

yeah on a SWOS fan site one of he devs said it had passed final cert and was just a waiting game.

Guess MS doesn't want to do two 800 pointers this week then.

Nah, it really doesn't mean that at all. Achievement lists come out whenever someone finds the game on PartnerNet, which simply means that the game might come out sometime in the next six months. It's not much of an indication of anything solid.

Which is really too bad because having SOME clue as to what's coming up would be nice. Sucks not having the points nor the money during the last wednesday of the month, only for them to release a multiplayer-centric game that has been abandoned once you get paid. :/

SWOS is part of the 10 XBLA titles offered this Fall.

I don't want to think about what would happen if the game is released before I receive my codes. >_<

A recent rumor is that SWOS is going to be replaced with E4 for that deal.

Well, having played the demo, I have to say that Screwjumpers is a pretty game. Everything moves fast, the character models look solid, and the textures and lighting give everything a nice glossy look.

Too bad the gameplay comes up short. It almost plays like Every Extend Extra, but not. And the other poster's assessment of the game being sort of a Fusion Frenzy non-fun minigame doesn't seem too far off the mark. Considering that you can buy Fusion Frenzy 2 for 20 dollars USD new now, this is definitely not worth it. Ah well.

Moving on...

I don't understand all the hype for Ikaruga on XBLA. Its already been released on both the DC and Gamecube, and on top of it all Its a vertical shooter. Vertical shooters and HD widescreen monitors don't mix all that well. I guess its cool if you have your 360 connected to an old CRT or a PC monitor that you use for TATE, but my 360 is connected to a 46" LCD. Not something I'd want to try to flip on its side.

Now REZ on the other hand? If they can get that to play in widescreen, that will be sublime. Even at 4:3, at least its using more than 40 percent of the screen.

Oooh, Undertow isn't good either? Wow, a really weak month for XBLA. I attempted to try Shrek N' Roll, I think I gave it 2 minutes of frozen shock "what, THATS your game design?!?" and sent it to the deletion gods.

Carcassione is addictive, though online with someone who isn't talking is a bore.

Uhhhh.... wow. I'm going to have to disagree and suggest an eye exam. I thought Screwjumper was one of those rare games that manages to get every single thing wrong. Even the sound seemed unbalanced and annoyed me.

I don't understand all the hype for Ikaruga on XBLA.
People want a modern shooter that doesn't require disc swapping.

LakeEarth said:

Well, I don't think so. It's not that it's bad it's just that it's a dull Robotron (or Geometry Wars or whichever one may prefer) coupled with a dull CTF-ish gameplay* and I just don't see why I, or anyone for that matter, would want to play that when COD4 just came out as the goal and idea is the same, just in a different setting and with different controls. And it has a singleplayer mode like Shadowrun had a singleplayer.

* It's more like Annex in Gears of War or Headquarters in COD4. I just don't know what the "standard name" for that match type is. Anyone care to inform me?

I thought the idea was fun, just the execution was poor. At least it's better than Screwjumper -- who would've thought?

Pennsylvania Gamer Mike Borland Fulfills Dream of Making His Own Video Game as Doritos Unlock Xbox Contest Winner

Fan Selected Favorite to be Developed by NinjaBee Xbox LIVE Arcade Release
in Summer 2008

PLANO, Texas, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Doritos announced that
"Doritos Dash of Destruction," the game concept created by Mike Borland of
Sewickley, Pennsylvania, is the winner of the Doritos "Unlock Xbox"
challenge. This first-of-its kind opportunity invited fans in the United
States to think of an Xbox LIVE(R) Arcade game idea that brings to life the
bold spirit of the Doritos brand. Between October 29, 2007 and November 18,
2007, Doritos lovers and gamers visited
http://www.snackstrongproductions.com to play and vote on their favorite
Xbox LIVE Arcade game demo conceptualized by each finalist, with Mike
Borland resulting as the fan favorite.

Now, Mike Borland will collaborate with Xbox and renowned game
development studio NinjaBee, a subdivision of Wahoo Studios, to bring the
intended tone, appearance and experience of his creative vision to fruition
from the ground up. NinjaBee has a track record of publishing hit games for
the Xbox LIVE community, including such hits as Cloning Clyde, Outpost
Kaloki X and Band of Bugs. A full scale game of "Doritos Dash of
Destruction" will be available for free on Xbox LIVE Arcade in summer 2008.
Until then, fans can continue to play all five beta games at
http://www.snackstrongproductions.com.

"The overwhelming voting response from the gaming community just goes
to show that every one of our five finalists' concepts embodied a truly
bold and intense gaming experience," said Ann Mukherjee, group vice
president, marketing, Frito-Lay. "Now, we look forward to watching the
evolution of 'Doritos Dash of Destruction' as we celebrate Mike Borland's
innovative idea."

Mike Borland's inspiration for "Doritos Dash of Destruction," was a
fusion of his passion for racing games and his love of Doritos. With each
round in the game, players choose to control one of two characters -- a
hungry T-Rex chasing a delivery truck loaded with crunchy Doritos tortilla
chips or the delivery truck driver, racing to escape the clutches of the
T-Rex. As the chase begins havoc ensues as the lumbering dino barrels
through the completely destructible city resulting in an intense game of
cat-and-mouse.

"To have the opportunity to create an Xbox LIVE Arcade game is a
gamer's dream," said Mike Borland. "This entire experience has been
wonderfully surreal, and I am so grateful to Doritos, Microsoft and
everyone who voted for my idea. Now, I can't wait to starting working with
the experts to fully-develop 'Doritos Dash of Destruction'!"

The "Unlock Xbox" campaign is the evolution of the Doritos brand
allowing consumers to be in control. Earlier this year, the Doritos brand
aired two consumer-created commercials during Super Bowl XL as part of the
Doritos "Crash the Super Bowl" challenge. These two ads kicked-off the
first-ever consumer-created Doritos brand television ad campaign, in which
all five of the Doritos "Crash the Super Bowl" finalists' ads aired on
national television. Following Doritos "Crash the Super Bowl," the brand
launched the Doritos "Fight for the Flavor" campaign to let Doritos fans
vote to determine which of two new flavors survives on store shelves and
which one gets pulled. Just months later, the brand launched the Doritos
"X-13D Flavor Experiment," where consumers have a chance to name the new
mysterious flavor of Doritos tortilla chips by entering their ideas at
http://www.snackstrongproductions.com.

Most recently, Doritos announced its search for an unsigned musical act
to have its original song performance aired during Super Bowl XLII, in
place of Doritos commercials. To compete, aspiring artists can submit audio
and video files of their original song performance at
http://www.snackstrongproductions.com now through November 25, 2007.

Yaris has tainted any expectation I would dare to have from this :(

Well, there is a key difference here, that being in the dev house being used. Yaris had Backbone Emryville on as developer, who can't seem to churn out a decent game with out some guided direction. Doritos Dash of Destruction is being developed by NinjaBee, one of the best developers for the service, the people who brought us Outpost Kaloki X, Cloning Clyde and Band of Bugs. So there is a chance thsi will be better then Yaris.

Yeah I have enjoyed the Ninja Bee stuff a tonne & the whole contest was a nice idea, hopefully NB get a decent wad to make something special

its just the YARIS well its left a tumor in my head right in the place any sponsored/free ad game excitement exists :)

Yaris has tainted every game for XBLA. Even ones that have already come out.

I'm really now looking for different offerings from XBLA, more board games, simple sports stuff (SWOS) & platformers etc (castle crashers being the biggy for me).
You know Castle Crashers is a beat 'em up, not a platformer, right?

Gowans007 said:

Does anybody play Yaris and think it's intentionally bad? I mean, really. I feel like Backbone were forced to take the job and to make sure they got their point across to the bosses, they threw together the most retarded game they could imagine. And to top it off, they tossed in an achievement that requires you to play the game for like 20 hours at least. They're just fucking with us, I swear.

If you look at it like that, it really is quite brilliant. If they wanted to make the worst game they could, they succeeded in every aspect imaginable. I'd love to interview them about it, but contracts probably prohibit them from admitting it even if I'm right.

OK, as I was saying a few weeks ago; I never tried Band of Bugs.

Anyway, I downloaded the trial, finished the tutorials and up pops a message saying I've unlocked an achievement if I buy the full game now.

So I do. :lol

It's a very fun little game. It's a turn based strategy game, with bugs. I like it, anyway. The amount of DLC out for it is a disgrace, though. To buy the game and all the DLC must be close to 2000 points.

So I'm not the only one thinking XBLA has been fucking horrible for a while now. Good. So many thousands upon thousands of classic games could be hitting that service and instead we are getting crappy PC shockwave flash games.

Guess it's just as well since my week is swamped anyway.
Team XBox seemed to like it but I don't know how much credibility they have around here. At least it's not a licensed game or a half-assed port.

What? The fact that you get a full-length campaign for your 800 and then have the option to buy two more full-length campaigns that are pretty much entire sequels for like 200 points each is a disgrace? That doesn't make any sense at all.

I loved what little I got to play of Undertow. I've been waiting for this one for a while. Came out of left field for me when it was first revealed.
