Axiom: Overdrive screens and mini-interview

AxiomOverdrive_screenshot_0006a.jpg

The screenshot that we have shows a top-down view, correct? And the object at the center is what the player controls?

Side-view. The object is called an O.T.F. (Orbital Thrust Frame).

The IGF entry alludes to "physics-based gameplay". Another game on XBLA that focuses on physics is the Unreal 3-powered RoboBlitz. RoboBlitz focuses on weapons that are used to solve physical puzzles and battle enemies. How does Axiom differentiate itself from that? Is your ship the key means of affecting the physical environment? Would you consider Axiom more of a puzzle game or an action game?

Like many indie games, the gameplay of Axiom Overdrive is innovative and as such, we're not ready to fully divulge details yet.

You mentioned that the game has been cooking for a while now. When was the first seed of the game planted? And how long has focused development been underway on Axiom?

Seed? Hmm... a 1-day prototype was put together in early 2003. When Wik was completed for XBLA, we came back to the 1-day prototype and began pre-production on Axiom.

What is the primary mode of control for the game (e.g., twin-sticks)?

Again, a bit early to divulge, but it's not Geometry Wars controls, if you were wondering.

The tagline on the website (yes, I noticed) is "Fly Fast, Fly Strong!" Care to elaborate on it at all?

The game is about speed and skill. :)

Reflexive has a strong PC portfolio, so what facet of the DNA/architecture attracted you as a studio to the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade?

We've made downloadable games for a long time and we focus on making games we care about. Our passions overlap well with XBLA's strive for playable "out of the box" titles. The games we are passionate to make have an audience that is excited to play them on XBLA. Wik was very successful for us, on XBLA, making us excited to continue following our passions on the Xbox 360.

A big thanks to Russell Carroll for making me want to shake the real answers out of him (he's just too good at his job) and to Tony "Twitchfactor" Barnes for the screens.

I mean...it's not Robotron or SmashTV impossible...but it's pretty damn close.
Speaking of the SmashTV achievement, did Midway ever fix it? I can't understand how heartbreaking it must be to finally beat that game without continuing to find out the achievement is broken :lol

When that first loaded, and I saw the top of the screenshot, I thought "Wtf? Why is he linking us to a picture of ice-cream, cherries and puddings in the XBLA thread?!" :lol

The arcade games are slowly getting better and better now, its really great to see these sorts of good looking fun games coming out.

Anyone else get the Xbox.com UK Newsletter in their Inbox today?

In the XBLA section, it has GripShift as 'OUT NOW' as well as...

...

N+

Surely that means it's coming out next week? If so, SWOS and
N+
would be an awesome week.

Source: http://ebm.email.xbox.com/c/tag/hBH...sue_img=&i_calendar_img=0&i_calendar_footer=0
It's certainly possible. They already released a few screenshots of N+ and Microsoft said it would be made available pretty soon.

For those of you sweating the notion that Sensi might be delayed again, worry no longer, AceyBongo, the UK's Major Nelson has confirmed that Snesi will be coming next week, the official thread of which shall be made no sooner then Wednesday, as per forum regulations.

AceyBongo(really? :lol ) better not be wrong, also are they taking any extra precautions to SWOS(as in I assume a lot of people are gonna be downloading this from the UK next wed I don't want the speed to be too slow)
p.s whats N+?

I'm glad I played the Xbox port of MS3.
The punishing continue system conditioned me for 1CC.

Not sure if I'd buy it again just to play on 360 though. It isn't exactly my favorite Metal Slug.

I got my codes from the free 10 games promotion, I hope besiktas1 got theirs too :D

They replaced SWOS for E4 as expected.
:( I haven't received nothing yet :( I'll give it till monday, if nothing then guess I've got some chasing up to do... just my luck.

Anyway Yay! for you, hope you enjoy playing them

I just came in here to say that Undertow's online multiplayer is pretty solid. Finally found a few people (mostly Americans) to play with and experienced little lag, even when the game filled up the remaining spots with bots. I was almost surprised by it even, since I've almost gotten used to XBLA games with an abysmal netcode.

What's also neat, is that you can drop in or out without any hassle (like Perfect Dark Zero).

A brilliant side-scrolling platformer.

Anyone else feel that XBLA has almost been hidden away since the last update? XBLA is my favourite thing about the 360 and deserves its own blade. This is a backwards step imo.

Yep, that actually bugged me too.

Are you serious? :lol
I never heard about that.

Soooo...someone actually DID this to find out? No way!!! Talk about idiot savant.

Broken achievements seriously suck, though. I stopped playing Exit in protest after I got a perfect on the first fifty stages for nothing. That'll show 'em!

Bastages.

Why isn't Asteroids available in Australia? I showed my son Asteroids (used US account) and said this is what games looked like when I was 8. Yes I was 8 in 1979. He's 8 at the moment. He was probably thinking 'shutup old man and put Mario Galaxy back on'.

I don't see it, SNK would probably make those achievements insane as well.
Actually, we already have a precedent set for SNK games. Like Streets of Rage or even the Sonics sounded like they'd be near impossible and then we found out about their quick-save system which made it all retarded easy, Fatal Fury Special might've been hard if it wasn't for the fact that you can unlock every achievement on the most ridiculously low difficulty level. And the game had a cheat menu that you could use; yes, the achievement for finishing a match without taking damage still unlocks when you're invincible. Hence, I seriously doubt 200/200 in MS will end up being as prestigious as something like Robotron.

LakeEarth said:

I think it'd be pretty funny if someone went through the thread and noted the amount of times you ask about either this or something about wave 100 in Robotron and I answer. We're probably in the double digits by now. :P

Anyway; no. It's still broken, although someone is still hounding them about it and he actually got a guy at Digital Eclipse to look into it.

They did finally take the time to fix the fact that you could play the demo forever (by simply pressing start to skip the "buy the game now!" message), though.

Hunahan said:

Many people have done it, one guy even recorded it.

It's not that hard and, besides, there's an invincibility glitch.

Yep, couldn't agree more.

Anyone know if Metal Slug is gonna have online co op? If it does I'm gonna have to triple dip. Even if it doesnt the power of achievements compels me.

It took me 10 minutes to find my XBLA games. The whole point of XBLA for me is the ability to get in a quick 15 minute game session. I would love to see a quick launch button for your favorite XBLA game after the splash screen.

Ha ha ha, those achievements for Metal Slug 3 are insane. I think I know one or two people that could finish the whole list, and they'd hate every second of it. Definitely one SNK title I won't be triple-dipping on.

Where's Samurai Shodown?! (Can't wait to see the achievement list for that. "Beat Amakusa using only kicks.")

What's so hard?
No miss simply means no deaths; you can fire as many bullets as you'd like.

Just wanted to throw out that the Rockin Holiday pack for Lumines is by far the best 400 points I've spent on live in a damn long time.

Also I don't understand the complaints about the new interface. How many damn demos do you guys have?

Realistic Kart title coming to XBLA

kart_007From time to time, we completely miss the boat on an XBLA announcement. Fortunately for us though, some of our readers are the next Columbo. This time it's JUDE1 who was kind enough to point out that we not only missed this announcement, but that we've been missing it for almost a month now.

Coming from the creators of both GTR and GTR2, considered by some to be the absolute pinnacle of racing sim games, is Kart Attack. While not much is know about this title (even the name is still just a working title), but from what we do know, it's absolutely gorgeous!

We'll let you know the moment we hear anything else about Kart Attack, but for now check out the official site for even more tasty screen shots.

http://www.blimeygames.com/site/main.php

Meh, it isn't that much of a cumbersome thing when one considers how much news is spun-off into their own threads.

Monthly threads would be awesome.

Anyway, what's the usual XBLA release time in EST? 3am? 4am? I'm looking forward to both games tonight.

Well, that is the thing here, Kart Attack is a a Kart Racer that is appreantly based on realism of all things, I am actually shocked that it is only now that somebody is attempting a kart racer from that angle.

Yeah...no thanks.
Good for them though I guess.

Also, Boom Boom Rocket is now officially up on the Australian Marketplace. It has been avaliable technically for a few weeks via the Xbox Arcade Pack [And hence the free update was on Marketplace].

Downloading Gripshift now.

Downloaded Arkadian Warriors. It's okay, but all the complaints of IGN are pretty much there.

I'd imagine that it'll be completely and utterly outclassed by Castle Crashers when that comes out.

Brakara said:
Yeah, I rather have a new kart sim racer than some poor Mario Kart clone. If I want Mario Kart, I'll play Mario Kart tyvm.

I just don't like sim racers in general. =/
Although having some wacky stuff mixed in with the serious-looking kart racing would make for a few laughs IMO.

Do we know roughly when Metal Slug 3 will be out? This year or early next?

I love that game, all the Metal Slugs are fantastic co-op games.

Next year.

Anyway.

User created and episodic content next for Xbox Live Arcade

New digital initiatives in face of PSN and Wii Ware competition

Having established Xbox Live Arcade as the leader in downloadable content for consoles, Microsoft is looking to be the first to successfully deliver episodic and user created content as the next evolution of the service.

With retro, brand new IP and advergames already part of the offering, David Edery, worldwide games portfolio planner for XBLA, has told GamesIndustry.biz about a number of options that the company is actively pursuing to keep ahead of competition from Sony's PlayStation Network and Nintendo's Wii Ware.

"We have some really big initiatives going on right now and I can say that everyone internally is really excited about user created content," said Edery.

"Multiple internal groups are trying to think about the best way of supporting it on the console and I can tell you for sure that things are happening, I just don't know if we'll see any of them in the next 12 months," he said.

While Microsoft is working on internal architecture to deliver user generated content – whether to support its XNA Studio creations or something more playful like Sony's LittleBigPlanet – it's also encouraging potential Arcade developers to look at the true potential of episodic gaming.

"We're really excited about trying to bring episodic content to XBLA," enthused Edery. "We haven't really done it yet and we're trying to think of the best ways to do so.

"The Penny Arcade guys are going to be bringing their episodic game to Xbox Live Arcade but I think of that as only the beginning – it's just one model for episodic and there are lots of different models."

Conceding that the market hasn't yet seen episodic content in the same context as episodic TV – half an hour to an hour long shows delivered weekly – Edery says that as soon as the right quality titles come along, Microsoft wants to continue to push the boundaries of digital delivery.

"It's an obvious statement but we don't want to put out bad content. We need to see a really, really good episodic franchise before we go ahead and throw a bunch of half an hour or hourly gameplay episodes on our service.

"The day a developer comes to us with that is the day we'll sign it. We're making it clear that we're very open to this sort of thing," he said.

Edery also accepts that new delivery methods are going to be met with a little bit of trepidation, at least until they can be proven to be a reliable and convincing route to market.

"Game developers are not used to thinking and designing in this way, it's a fundamentally different process and I think it's just a learning thing where developers and ourselves need to experiment and figure out what works and what doesn't.

"There's also a certain amount of fear, frankly. If you're an independent developer betting your company on this, something that has never been done successfully before, it's scary when there are literally no good examples of successful episodic gaming," he concluded.
