Oh! My! Ouendan! impressions

You might have been skeptical when Famitsu gave the game 35 last week... 35 points for a rhythm action game, huh? Well, they're pretty much on the mark for this one. My first hour with this game suggests that it rocks hard.

First, the types of hit... you've got odd beats, that just appear as a 1 with a circle around them. The circle gets smaller and when it reaches the size of the number, you have to hit it. Then there's the sequences going 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. again with the circles that diminish in size until the beat hits. Third kind of hit is a rolling hit. A circle shrinks around the number and when you hit, you keep hold of the ball that appears and roll it along a line, keeping your pen inside the ball space, and letting go at the end of the path. Finally there's the spinning disc. Every now and then a disc will take up the bottom screen and you have to spin it as quickly as possible (either clockwise or anti-clockwise is ok) to build up excitement.

The story is told like an interactive manga. Squares appear telling the story, you do your rhythm thing and in between parts of the song, more manga appears. The story depends on your progression in the song, and there are different degrees of failure and success. Your "life" is measured by a spirit bar which automatically ticks down with time and you must keep it filling up by getting good scores. When it runs out, you fail totally and have to start again.

Levels can be chosen freely to some extent. At the start of the game, there's a map of a city which you can slide around the screen, and there are four people you can help at first. Succeed with all of them and another five open up. It's worth pointing out that the first four are quite straightforward and I passed them all on the first or second try. However, the second group of people are all die bitch hard... really. I've tried a few of them several times and still can't get past them. You Gitarooman fans are gonna love this! You really have to get to know the song well to succeed, which is a satisfying requirement for this type of game.

The music so far has been pretty good j-pop. If you hate j-pop, you'd best avoid this, but it seems that j-pop and the rhythm action genre have a long history together, so it's not really anything to be surprised by. The songs fit well with the stories told and there's some classic slapstick humour going on.

As far as longevity goes, it's a tough call right now. It looks like it's going to take a while to even pass some of these songs, and then there's a tough ranking system which extends a looooong way across the screen. It's going to make a nice break from Famicom Wars DS for an hour or two, then I'll come back to it properly when I've beaten FW.

Got Pac'n'Roll too... not that impressed really. The gameplay is pretty cool, but the camera is a bit annoying and the view is just too small. Value-wise, this and Pac Pix should definitely have been sold as one game, but I have two Pac styli now, so that's one perk, at least.

I'm interested in hearing more about this when you put some more time into it. I was hoping for some kind of a Marble Madness/Monkey Ball type of vibe.

Why does Japan keep getting such awesome games? This game was made by Nintendo, correct?

Also, 'Osu Tatakae' means 'Oh My'?

No Nintendo didn't make this game, they're just publishing it. The makers of Gitaroo Man developed it. I forget their name though:(

No. It means Fight!... I'm just expressing my pleasure.

is it worth an import if you don't understand japanese?
Yes! The manga tells the story pretty well.

There's definitely a vibe there, but something big is missing. After my first play through the first world (five stages), I don't feel a big draw to keep playing it. I'll push myself to play more, but I'm not sure it's going to get much better.

hmmm.. love to hear more about this when you give it more time, whats the length and difficulty like? I got absolutely burned on pac pix, only ds game I've ever sold. And I kept zoo keeper......

I was really hoping pac pix would deal with my monkey ball craving until the new one came out :(

Edit: beaten I guess, oh well, hope it gets better. anyone else played it yet? the videos made it look really fun.

YES! Thanks for the info, Jonnyram. I'm definitely importing this one.

I have a very hard time believing this will every come (remotely intact) stateside.

As has been said, even if it comes stateside, what are the chances of the music remaining intact and not being replaced by American pop music? Same deal as what's likely holding up Band Bros/Jam with the Band.

Jonny, can you give some more impressions on both Ouendan and Pac N Roll when you get the chance?

While Pac N Roll didn't receive stellar reviews from EGM, they made it sound like it was a pretty challenging game and called it the baby of Super Mario 64 and Marble Madness. They also said it gets very tough on later levels and the level design is fairly good. There's also some pretty challenging modes like time attack and the original Pac-Man arcade game included. They marked it down for having a small story but it's Pac-Man so I can't really see that as a negative.

I was just really looking forward to Pac N Roll. :(

wow i'm happy that i've pre-ordered Ouendan... I should get it in the next few days :D

thanks jonnyram for the impressions.

Thanks, Jonnyram! Very good impressions! Oedan is one of my “must buy” games for this year! :)

Hey, did you play Full Metal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy? Is it a good purchase for DS?

I've heard that the songs in this game aren't sung by the original artists? Can you confirm, jonnyram? :(
This is correct (supposedly). But they sound pretty close to the original artists at any rate. I honestly couldn't tell the difference really.

Ok then, that was my only qualm about this game pretty much. Time to buy! :)

yes, support 4-players download play
SORRY GUYS!!!
I got the game last night
actually the game DOES NOT support download play
you only can share the "Training mode" to other people
there is a multiplayers mode, but all the players (up to 4) must have their own game

I have tried 3 stages last night
even I am usually not interested in rhythm games
this game is very attractive to me
my initial score is 9.0 / 10 :D
