Im sure you Links fans will come in too but I'm mostly looking into buying a new golf game for this year.

I really want to know how was TG2004 online? Did it seem like you were just playing CPU players like in HSGF?

Tiger is pretty good but in order to really know how a golf game should be i would suggest LINKs. BUT TWG is pretty damn good i would wait for 2005 since it should be better lots of character customization thats pretty cool.

Tiger's just like most of the EA games online. Voice chat's supported, the lobbies and EA Messenger are the same or similar to the football games, and it runs pretty well though I did have more disconnects in that than NCAA. Last year only supported head-to-head, I'm not sure if they're going to continue that this year or bump it up to four (come on EA, you know you want to). That said I prefer the mechanics of a Hot Shots, but for playing friends online I'll probably go Tiger.

I liked Tiger 2004. Online was just like Madden. You have voice chat, lobbies, etc. Offline, there is a ton to unlock and a cool ass career mode. I was going to get HSG4, but I can't go back to the HSG series after really getting into Tiger. Online gave it a ton of extended life, IMO. the "Tiger Proofing" of the courses in 2005 should extend the offline life also.

Tiger 2004 Pros:

+ face modeling
+ tons of courses
+ excellent sound design
+ tons of play modes

Cons:

- analog driving is ridiculously straight and accurate
- spin of ball is modified in midair, not during the swing
- putting is dodgy just like it was in TW2003, and requires Zen strength more than actual knowledge of golf

Seriously, despite the PGA licensing, TW2004 is the most arcadey golf game I've ever played except for that Golden Tee golf game that's in a lot of bars. Mario Golf, despite its deceptively cartoonish appearance, is more hardcore. TW2005 is supposed to have analog putting, though--if EA can pull that off, it'll be a miracle.

I like Tiger best... most complaints are unwarranted.

Mid-air spin and power boost are definitely arcadey... I prefer to turn spin and power off. Spin, like in real golf, should be applied with the type of swing you take (draw/fade), which you definitely can do with tiger. I don't like games that let you apply "top spin" to a shot. The game's one big limitation in shot making is that it doesn't let you hit a higher/softer shot without applying a fade. It does offer a flop shot for wedges though.

Putting I prefer set on no caddy tips but with the grid and break line on.

I think Links could be a fantastic golf game... I love the way the swing "feels." Just the difficulty settings are poorly set up. Putting is way too hard (although I love the concept of putting purely on feel) on advanced/expert yet shot making is way too easy on intermediate and lower. If there's a way to customize the settings then I take back my criticism.

That said, Hot Shots is an awesome game too. Probably the best traditional control golf game ever. And the online tournament mode is wonderful. Is Tiger 2005 again only one on one online?

This is exactly right. After the first few hours with TW, I realized it really wasn't my kind of game. The only terribly crappy thing Prospero forgot to mention is the "Luck" statistic, which basically means that your actual skill means absolutely nothing on many approach shots as your "luck" will lead you to get a great shot if you're anywhere near the pin.

Is Tiger 2005 again only one on one online?

EA SPORTS: What are some of the new features of online play?

Sam Player: Well, of course Xbox LIVE is a huge new addition for 2005. As far as new features go, we've got several, including three-hole quick matches, an easier interface for advertising challenges, new "fixed golfer" matches and tournaments, single-entry tournaments, simulated wagering and even handicapping.

EA SPORTS™ Online Competition*: Play peer-to-peer with anyone across the country on Xbox®2 LIVE. Compete in Online Tournament events complete with money lists, full stat tracking, and league leaders.
