Ok, that's it, I hate Steam.

Ok, I started out really likeing Steam, after all it;s the program that allowed me to play Half Life 2 within like 20 minutes of it's release. Thta was cool, however what's NOT cool is when last Firday, I tunr on my PC to have the Steam login pop-up, I leave it to always logged in, so whatever, I type in my Password, and guess what "This Steam account has been disabled"

WHAT THE FUCK?

I have sent Valve to messages about this through the Steam site, but this is complete bullshit, On there fourms there's a topic about how Valve has dissabled 30,000 accounts of people who tried to illegaly access other games on Steam or something, thing is, I didnt do that, PLUSS, even if I did try to access any other games over Steam, it's not illegal, seeing as I bought the Gold edition over Steam. What can I do? I didnt do ANYHTING to diserve this shit. FUCK you Valve, you used to be one of my favorite developers, but with this like this...

Any one else run in to this shit? and if so what did you do?

if you didn't do ANYTHING, then just send them an email. they'll explain why you were banned, and i'm sure you'll be able to work something out.

I didn't really like how Steam downloaded Half-life 2 to my computer when I just wanted to try out the demo. Because I only had like 7 gb's of free space left before that...and I can't recall even getting a notice about the game being downloaded to my computer.

Well, I sent them my least mesaage over the Steam stite only a few hours ago, so im going to give them a little time to reply through e-mail, plus, I am looking on the Steam site and cant seem to find any contact info, I would really like a phone number to sorth this out, they not only owe me fixing this shit, but also an apology.

I've not had your problem.. But, Steam has caused many other problems these last two weeks, I never had any big problems with it before. But now Im greeted with slow downloads (on a 8Mbit connection), games that fail to install properly etc.

Steam really, truly, sucks whale balls.

Anyway, good luck with your problem.

just delete the files then. it's an option for every steam game.

Yeah, I did. But my point is, what if I only had 5 gbs free space left? Would've been left with no space at all, without even noticing it happening. They could at least send out a warning first. Or was it perhaps hidden in the long and tiresome standard form agreement during installation that I never read? :P

That sucks. People who use hacks deserve to be banned, but as for you, I hope valve takes another look at why they banned u

What pisses me off is that Steam updates all the freaking time. I go to play Counter-Strike: Source...Whoops, gotta wait 7 minutes. What it adds every time I log in, I don't know.

I've just had to deal with steam for the first time in installing the HL2 demo

and so far I don't like it

so I download the HL2 demo and go to install it and mind you this is a few hours after it's released and steam allready has to download updates WTF

and every single time I start the damn thing

has to download some upgrades, granted most of them are small and Im on a blazing fast connection so it hasnt been too bad but it gets a bit annoying

I kinda dont like having to go through another program to load up the program I want to use

I understand they want to combat piracy and I commend them for that BUT when it comes at the expense of pissing off and causeing major inconviences for your customers that's when i don't think it's a good option

SO people are pissed at patches and bug fixes?

Sounds like you tried to play the pirated versions and/or had aimbots installed. Have a very nice christmas, offline

You are an idiot.

What happened when your client and the server were different versions back in the old days of vanilla counterstrike ?? Thats right. Patch time. Only you had to do it yourself.

Now they made it so lazy fucks don't have to do a god damn thing, AND YOU ARE STILL COMPLAINING

Some people....

people don't want things patching automatically whenever it damn well pleases. Haven't you ever had windows auto update sneak itself into the on position and tell you to update or install the most useless shit ever and you just keep clicking cancel thinking, "FUCK OFF MS!"

that act of patchign should be fully automated but only begun when the uses decides its time. In other words, the user should have to go to a main menu and click 'patch me' and then, and not before then, all patching is done without any other input from the user.

Looks like you didnt read my post, I bought the legitimit Gold Steam package, and I DIDN'T do anythign wrong, I hate cheaters, and I therefore dont cheat my self, wouldent even know where to get an aim bot, and even if I did, considering I havent once played anything but HL2 (oh, and a little HL:S) with Steam since it's release, (meaning no online play) I have no reason to be disabled! Read the post next time, ONLINE

agreed. not sure what pisses me off more, though. Steam or its defenders. Not everyone who hates steam hates it because it stopped them from piracy. not everyone who hates auto-updates wants to go to fileplanet.com to download and manually patch games (you fucking nimrods).

I was just reading this thread out of curiousity and don't actually use steam but from the bitching I assumed it couldn't be turned off. If it can, I retract my statements, people really just dumb fucks (asusming turning it off is merely a button and not some weird ass process) ;P

Do you post drunk? Your spelling sucks and you're getting pissed off over nothing. Just wait for Valve to give you an update on what happened. They probably banned you for being an asshole.

This argument is really getting old. If the game runs perfectly fine on my PC, I shouldn't be updated with a patch aimed at fixing some obscure bug or driver issue that does not exist with my PC and/or its configuration. Most patches don't seem to do a goddamn thing anyways so why go through all the hassle? Oh yeah, because Valve says so. It is their game afterall.

I downloaded the demo, and liked the game, but Steam just makes me upset.

- It's another program to go through that loads slow, and gets between me and playing
- It's adware
- When it says it's updating Steam, it's doing that... but not for the first few minutes. Before that, it reads your steam.exe file, presumably to see if you've hacked it. Another thing to get between me and playing.
- I have 3.50 Gigabytes of files in the Valve directory... how did that uncompress from a 751 MB installation file?

I just suck at spelling, deal with it! Aan banned for being an asshole?, ok buddy. First off Im not an asshole kind of person, and secondly even if I were, how the hell would Valve mesure that from me while playing a single player game? Jesus christ get off my back, im pissed as it is, I should be able to play the game I bought and paied for.

Rule of thumb: don't get worked up over what an idiot says

Like the post 4 above yours mentions, LEARN HOW TO USE IT!

Stop bitching about Steam not doing what you want when you haven't clicked the button that is labeled "Do not automatically update this game". Idiot.

1. It doesn't load slow, it takes 10 seconds tops.
2. It's not adware. Under the steam Monitor window or if you are waiting to play a game (because it needs to update) you will be shown a small banner from whoever you are downloading from, only fair seeing as how they are paying for the massive ammounts of bandwidth.
3. Stop fucking complaining and learn how to use Steam before you bitch about it.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF STEAM FOR IDIOTS

Right click Halflife 2 from the steam games menu, click properties.
Change the setting "Always keep this game up to date" to "Do not automatically update this game"
Right click Halflife 2 and click "Create Desktop Shortcut"
Start Halflife 2.

If there are no updates to the Steam platform itself (these are usually about a meg or 2 in size) then the game will launch in less than 5 seconds. Like most other games out there except Halflife 2 will not have to load copy protection bullshit nor do you need the disc in the drive.

If you are a really paranoid looser then either block Steam thru your firewall or disable the internet and start it in Offline Mode. You WILL need to have aquired 100% of the game (all current patches) to do this.

Of course, if you don't download patches, you wont get the benefits, like extremley better loading times, and the removal of copy protection.

Where's the "Make Steam Optional So I Don't Have To Use It At All" button? Asshole.

I don't understand all these obscene and angry reactions aimed at the original poster when it's clear he didn't do anything wrong. You would think the people who aren't pleased with Steam were personally offending all of your mothers. You should take a huge step back before thinking of calling someone an idiot because it only makes you look like a frustrated little cunt trying to attack something so objective as a person's perception and opinion of a service he is receiving.

Did I just drop into IGN boards?

Burger said:
It aint optional. Fact.

If you hate it so much then don't play Valves games. Simple.
And that's exactly what I'm doing. It would've been nice to play HL2 but I'm not going to subscribe to Valve's bullshit "Big Brother" police-ware just so I can play their game. That's my option and I'm exercising it. I don't need to be called an idiot for not liking Steam or how it's used. Simple.

My internet was out yesterday because my cable modem crapped out, so I decided to fire up Steam. It turned out that I couldn't play any of their games in offline mode. Is LAN play even possible anymore?

I can't believe all this whining. I'm playing CS and HL2 like mad, and I never ever had any trouble with Steam. Those updates? I'm really glad it's automatic, as I'm sure I always have the best version there is, and I won't be encountering any bugs or slow performance issues that I'm alone with.

I don't know why people are actually defending steam. First of all, it's not preventing any piracy because I've seen a lot of pirates download Half Life 2 and run it off a Steam emulator. Second of all, why the fuck can't I make steam optional, or install games offline. I mean I payed for the game so I should do whatever the fuck I want with it. I don't want them coming in with their bullshit software to scan through my PC to see if I have anything that MAY threaten their software. And to the assholes saying "put the settings on "do not automatically update" and there goes your problem", no there doesn't go my problem, that just makes steam all the more pointless. Plus I don't want to see a fucking advertisement for a game I own every single time I turn on the program and I don't want to keep steam on because I actually use my memory for *gasp* other programs. Yes that's right, my PC wasn't built just for steam as surprising as that may sound.

sounds like an ad to me.. unless the game was free.. i mean, all this stuff is required to play the game they paid for, right?

The problem in the first post is more Valve screwing things up than Steam. Of course Steam is the tool providing them the means to do this in the first place. Anyway, this was missing from the thread:

steam.gif

Yeah, Steam is doing shit about the pirates. I already have a couple of friends who easily obtained their pirated version of Half-Life 2 and their game was up and running waaay faster than my authentic Steaming pile of shit that had to do like a million downloads/registration/updates before I could get into the game proper.

I bought boxed HL2 for my dad for Xmas.

The install is at HOUR #3. First it has to copy. Then it has to decrypt. Then it has to verify. Now it just told me to wait 20 minutes to "update." Jesus christ, and I have fucking DSL!

I can appreciate what Valve is trying to do with Steam. They're not intentionally going out of their way to screw customers - with any big new implementation of technology there's going to be problems, and make no mistake, Steam has its fair share. For dial-up users especially, Steam can be an off and on burden, one that I think could've been at least partly resolved by Valve implementing BITS or their own similar technology into Steam. I like that Steam automatically updates in the background, I DON'T like that it consumes 100% of my already paltry dialup bandwidth and doesn't detect and adjust when other apps need it. Come on Valve, if fricken' Windows Updates can do it, you can. One day I suspect Steam will evolve into something wonderful, especially for broadband users, but it does have some definite growing to do...

AHHAHAH "Steam"ing pile of shit. Nice!

I'm easily amused, yes.

Does steam prevent selling half life 2 secondhand due to compulsory authentication?

You have to sell your steam account login as well, games are not transferrable between accounts.. So you better open a different steam account for each game you think you may sell one day. Yes, that sucks.
