What are the essentials for a game room?

Do you have a dedicated game room?

72" wall-mounted Sony OLED, 6 reclining media seats with drink holders and USB charging ports, framed movie-style gaming posters, 7.2 surround sound, dedicated hardware closet for consoles with in-wall wiring.

Anything less is unacceptable.

Ah, sweet.

Your game room is mostly purposed for retro gaming? That's something to consider. 🤔
If I had the space I'd have a CRT and it would be perfect for retro gaming but as it is - it's more for the rare time I want to play something older, or something on PC is good enough to keep me in there once work is over lol (like Doom The Dark Ages now)

I have all my retro stuff (PS2-3, Dreamcast, Saturn, Emu PC, PS5, XSX and one of the Switches in the basement hooked up to 65" C4 OLED but I also have vanilla 1080p Sony TV which actually works a bit better with some of the older PS3 titles.

Got a decent Soundbar setup alongside it , some LED lighting you can control (fairly cheap one off Amazon, not $$ Philips). And my foldable racing setup is also there. So yeah, decent TV or two (if you have retro stuff), good lighting setup, nice shelves for consoles and games, and comfy seating, you will be good to go. Cool Video Game posters and a bar setup are a bonus.

That said, it's not a completely separate area, it's right across my little home gym area and some kids stuff there as well.

I just don't have the space to do completely separate room. I was trying to get a place when we were house hunting back in 2021, but with housing prices in DC area absolutely crazy, that didn't happen.

This sounds amazing. How long did it take to all come together?

Couple years probably? It's easier than it sounds honestly. Setting up TV and sound bar is straightforward. Getting some "mood lighting" takes a day basically unless you go crazy.

The main thing is getting the shelves and console setup, but you can get that in IKEA with some modifications. That will probably take the longest, lol. I wouldn't go crazy on the setup initially either.

2x monitor
1 gaming PC
1 console
1 speaker
tissue paper and vaseline

Don't have one yet, but when I do it'll probably be for older consoles and just have a relaxed/fun vibe. I have a bunch of decorative stuff that wouldn't belong anywhere else, aside from that I'll buy a cheap soundbar for my old plasma TV and work with what furniture I already own that will get repurposed for the room.

if its a somewhat modern home, like 80s or newer, i wouldnt worry about the weight of the equiptment since most of the weight will be spread out. not like a gun safe or gym set where all the weight is focused on one point. wouldnt hurt to ring up your plans during the inspection.

Yes. But probably not as thought of by NEOGAF — I have 14 Arcade1Ups in a playroom upstairs, so it's like a literal "gameroom" from the 80s/90s.

We have arcade night every now and then.

whats the story behind this image? i have always wondered.
Its from 2005, op doesnt have those pics anymore but if u read comments/other posts u will connect the dots- aka nintendo prison/iwata shrine, starting donation so OP can move out, nintedohermit and many more :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I ordered a display cabinet from Wayfair. I had to put it together but they gave me a 15% coupon. It was under $200 and has internal lighting.

I've got a dedicated game room. It's still a work in progress because I've got stuff still in boxes and stuff on its way this next week.

I have a shelf like that too. I am going to get a Nuka Cola rocket bottle to put on it

If you have any retro consoles - a comfy recliner, decent CRT, some nice shelves to store consoles and controllers will go a long way

Not my picture, but this setup is practically my ideal:

Good stuff.

Edit - I just noticed that you have an original copy of Xenogears in there! ❤️

In terms of aesthetic and furnishings and comforts...that's up to you? There isn't a template for a game room. Create a setup based on the reality of the space you're using, and with the things you'd like to have in there.

Thank you, Captain Obvious

A quality chair is all that matters, and that chair can't have "gaming chair" written anywhere on the box.
Yeah, typical gaming chairs look like complete ass to me.
I want something with a classy/adult aesthetic, that's also comfortable as well.

As a married man, I cannot stress enough the importance of a sign for your door that says "no girls allowed".
I love that my wife isn't an annoying piece of crap like some of you other dudes have it. My wife is near perfect. She enjoys reading the strategy guides to me while we game in some RPG. Heck, she's even watching me play DS2 which even I was like "babe, go do whatever else you want. I have packages to drop off."

Is it really a game room if you don't outfit it in retro late-80's/early-90's arcade/bowling alley fluorescent carpet?

I think not.

Kidding, I would never know. I live in a house that's barely big enough for three people, so my "gaming room" is a corner of my living room. But believe me if I ever won a lottery, I'd have a house with a big ass basement that would be my own private arcade, skee-ball, pool hall, and massive console gaming space.

And it would be covered with retro 80's fluorescent carpet. :pie_roffles:

My wife is great and I do know a fair number of guys who do not have a wife that's nearly as accommodating, so I know how good I have it... but you must understand that my entire persona is shtick.
