The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
D.O.C. is one guy, not a group.. and man he was great..... and if you don't add some EPMD I will hate you forever!

First off: THE GOAT Eric B and Rakim.

Then:

Big Daddy Kane -- Long Live the Kane
Gang Starr -- Step in The Arena, Take it Personal, really anything. Premier is IMO the best producer of all time
LL Cool J -- anything by Uncle L. Try I need a beat
Run DMC -- Tougher than Leather
Jungle Brothers

Also, depends how old school you're talking (do you mean golden era?):

De La Soul
Tribe, of course
Black Moon
Del

Then go back to Rakim, and realize no one was ever better.

The D.O.C. No One Can Do It Better album is great. I still have it and listen to it every once and awhile.

I also would pick up Sir Mix-A-Lot SWASS and the Seminar albums.

Biz Markie is good if you like fun silly lyrics.

EPMD's first 2 albums are good too.

Oh, Raheem The Vigilante I like that one too.

De La Soul is kinda cool, but every thing I've heard from them is kinda underwhelming.

Try again.

Are you looking for mid- to late-80s stuff? Or early 90s? Different eras as far as rap is concerned.

In Rakim's case, is that he's affected every, literally every, MC who has come out of NYC after him. When he came out there was nothing like him. Not the lyrics, not the rhyme style, not the flow. Chuck D called Public Enemy rap's Beatles but for my money no one has affected hip hop vocally, at least on the East coast side of things, the way Rakim has.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
EPMD and Rakim - Suffolk County represent!

Do you have XM radio? There's a great oldskool hiphop channel on there (65).

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
I have said it many times I will say it again.. The D.O.C started west coast hip-hop as we know it today... Get No One Can Do It Better now!!! You will be a better person for it...

On New Years Day this year I actually GOT TO SEE De La Soul at the Summadayze festival here at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, they were AEWSOME! Here are some pics…

Then I got to see Arrested Development on Feb 14th at the same venue for the Good Vibrations music festival ! It would have to be one of the best performances I have ever seen. Both were amazing, but Arrested Development were outstanding.

You can see all the photos of both festivals on my blog. But I feel so privileged to have got to see these guys, and both played all the old stuff too.
