Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

256px-Toejamcover.jpg

I never realized how many Xbox exclusive Sega games there were. I guess they were a bit bitter at the PS2 over the Dreamcast.

You know, that game that got a shitload of hype and then vanished without a trace almost immediately after release. The game that no one talks about for any reason other than to make you go, "oh yeah, that game." The game that got all those magazine cover stories that seem like they could have gone to a more worthwhile game, in retrospect. I have possibly made Titanfall: The Thread here (this is me pre-empting the inevitable "one and done" post),

I'm still not seeing how you dropped this in your post, unless your definition of forgotten differs from its true meaning. The game's clearly not forgotten and I had no trouble getting into matches last night. Hate on the game or "manufactured hype" all you want, but the game's doing just fine and will be getting one sequel at least.

Forgotten indeed.

What about Zombies Ate My Neighbors? It was so hyped that I remember Andy McNamara, in the 1993 E3 edition of Game Informer, saying that it was easily his most anticipated game for the year.

That was quite a statement when you look at even a small sampling of other games that came out in 1993:

Star Fox, Syndicate, Mortal Kombat II, Day of the Tentacle, Link's Awakening, Samurai Shodown, Mario All-Stars, Secret of Mana, Sonic CD, Myst, Doom, and 7th Guest

In a historical context, Zombies Ate My Neighbors might not even fit in the top thirty most influential games that came out in 1993. Relative to Mortal Kombat II, Myst, or Doom, probably no one even remembers or cares what it even was.

We did a Back in My Play podcast about the game last year; you should check it out.

You must be pretty young cause that's one of the most well known games of the time.

You CAN say its sequel is forgotten.

I played the shit out of this game. It really had almost nothing to do with Die Hard, but luckily Die Hard Trilogy on PS1 was a game that did the name Justice. Doesn't stop Die Hard Arcade from being a fun game though.

I'd say Arcade holds up much better nowadays then Trilogy. It has nothing to do with Die Hard as you say but its still a fun beat-em-up.

Was hyped as PSP's KILLER APP pre-release, and then I didn't hear about it after it released:

Nice find. It was one of the many PSP games I rented during my shortlisted Gamefly subscription. Played it for a couple minutes then got bored.

BTW, did you know there was a sequel?

I know as an individual I don't matter much, but I just replayed Zombies Ate My Neighbors last weekend. Think I made it to level 13 or 14? There were aliens, and they kicked my ass. Such a great game.

Probably disneys meddling. The same thing happened with the sequel and 3ds spinoff, both games werent ready at all (even more than the original) but Disney forced a november release to coincide with the Wii U launch

That's a real shame, the Epic Mickey series had so much potential.

Didnt see this yet... i remember playing a demo for this... or that this had a secret playable character in a different game (its been awhile)

I remember there being a lot of hype for this game (mostly due to the perceived hotness of the two leads). Then the game actually came out and well, PSM in their review tagline summed it up better then I ever could:

"More like SighGirls..."

I remember this one being hyped up right around the PS2 launch

You may have missed this, but we've determined through the ever accurate measure of twitch viewership that Oni is less forgotten than Mario Kart 8.

Hello!!!! Are we like forgetting something that recently came out?!?!?!

TITAN FALL

you know, the CoD killer...

The worst thing about this post isn't even the suggestion of Titanfall (again). It's the fact that you somehow believe nobody else has suggested it in this thread. Maybe read the OP or at least the most recent 10 or so posts before starting out with "Hello!!!! Are we like forgetting..."?

Maybe some Capcom 5 love, too?

I love this game. No one brings it up, it's not relevant any longer. I get that it had repetitive locations and the "can't shoot while moving" was a bit much for some people. It was a really gorgeous and fluid experience and provided some reference for Vanquish, so there's some justice in the world.

I love P.N.03. Good for like 10-15 minute bursts of play because it does get repetitive, but it's a good game. If you don't "get it," you won't ever get it, but I think it's an underrated title.

Deathjr2.jpg

Hahaha, Death Jr. The developers/publisher were/was flat out delusional. They had Saturday morning cartoons planned!

You're looking for stuff like "I am Alive," which had big hype, then turned in to a downloadable title that was apparently not terrible but not very good, and which didn't sell particularly well but didn't kill Ubisoft or anything like that.

I Am Alive is a fine game. The only problem it has is The Last of Us fanboys will, 100% of the time, shit up any thread that discusses it.

TITAN FALL

you know, the CoD killer...

Hello! Are we like forgetting to read any of the thread before posting, maybe even the OP at least?

You'd know people have brought up TITAN FALL a lot and there's been plenty of discussion on it and how it really hasn't been forgotten (the most forgetful people seem to have not played it or even own a console that could play it...).

Could you link me to a news article/ preview/ review with the quote from EA, MS or Respawn about Titanfall being a "CoD Killer"? The closest I can find is "from the makers of CoD" and that's not really the same at all.

Pretty sure I know a ton of people who play Titanfall all night, so it's not forgotten, considering they aren't the only ones.

I get it. You don't like Titanfall, me neither.

Actually forgotten? Did Tekken x Street Fighter gain much hype? Cause that disappeared.

Here's one I remember there being a lot of hype for (paraphrasing the hype at the time):

"It turns the zombie genre on its head since you ARE the zombie!"

"Uses the Halo engine!"

"Developed by an ex-Bungie co-founder"

stubbs-the-zombie.jpg

I had a friend who bought this, saw him play it once then never heard about it again. Some of that is probably because it came around the time that the new generation was getting started (360/PS3/Wii).

I don't understand the animosity towards Titanfall in this thread, or really in general. That game has done really well any way you can measure and I can't take the belittling comments seriously. It is interesting though.

An actual game that meets the criteria would be Too Human. What an absolute disaster.

Ninja_shadow_of_darkness_cover.jpg

One of a number of a Saturn refugees that ended up on other systems when Stolar pulled the plug. Received a lot of middling reviews in game magazines when Core Design was coming hot off of Tomb Raider 2.

Wow. This reminded me of Bernie Stolar who was quite big at Sega at the time and was the man to turn Sega around.

Kinda fits this thread, right?

I made a thread similar to this before and the game I mentioned was MARVEL NEMESIS RISE OF THE IMPERFECTS

64015_front.jpg

A Marvel fighting game in the era when everyone assumed MvC3 would never happen. It also came out a few years after the super hero movie boom, so everyone was looking forward to more superhero games. Plus it was from EA, so you can guess it was marketed heavily. However, many people didn't like the game as half the roster was just made-up heroes owned by EA and it was woefully unbalanced with terrible AI. What's funny is that Captain America was a PSP exclusive character. I can't imagine the Cap being regulated to handheld-only character in this day and age.

Probably not what you're thinking of, but Konami gender-swapped the protagonist and put her in their TCG (the only reason I recognise the name at all is that I owned the card at some point).

Played through both. First game was crap, but the sequel was actually good

It got a DS spin off as well which, as far as I know, was somewhat even worse than the first game.

Let me give you a hint. It didn't come out on the PS4.

starhawk_ps310.jpg

Star Hawk. Successor to much beloved and one of the best online shooter at start of ps3 gen. It was by Dyaln and very much anticipated

Innvoative game play check
Base building check.
Good tps controls check
Good graphics check.
Hawks that turn into fucking robots check.

Eventually it came out and nobody even bought and played . Now no one even remembers it and may have killed the franchise

Man, I never really got what went wrong with this game.

Doesn't look like anyone has mentioned this gem yet:
60464_front.jpg

It was developed by Harmonix and touted as the first "real game" for EyeToy at the time, but it came out and received little fanfare and only modest reviews. It obviously didn't do Harmonix in, it just sort of came and went without anyone really noticing.

I don't understand why there are so many posts questioning titanfall being brought up in this tread. Seriously, some people in the media hyped this thing up as the best thing since sliced bread. Even websites gaf looks favorably upon (such as eurogamer) were giving this game ten times as much attention as any other. And what happened? Titanfall is a fun game that is short on content therefore a lot of the early community have simply moved on.

That's why it deserves a place in this thread. Is it as 'forgotten' as some of the titles here? Of course not, but the coverage it received in the media earned it it's place here. This was the game that was going to win the console war for Microsoft... This was the game that was going to kill cod. Believe the hype.

I just want to know what the rationale behind this game was. "Hey lets make an open world game with absolutely nothing in it to do and have the only way to get anywhere be turning signals pointing to the next mission, making sure that no would would ever humor the thought of exploring the world."

I honestly think it would have been better if they just focused hard on the story telling (I'd argue it's one of the better written games out there, period) and made the game longer.

This is a great topic, since the history of gaming is littered with the corpses of "Next Big Thing" games that were hyped as the 2nd coming pre-release, then came out and were...not necessarily bad even, but just met with a collective "Meh".

51205_front.jpg

This was Nintendo's 2nd Super FX game after Star Fox, and while it wasn't bad, it felt like what it was: a very early 3D game running on woefully underpowered hardware. Star Fox worked because the on-rails linear nature of its play made it easy to hide its fundamental simplicity. Trying to do a full-3D, go "anywhere" game, controlling vehicles making direct contact with the environment instead of just floating in open space, and in a genre where a sense of speed is paramount pretty much exposed Super FX as more tech demo than design revolution.

I liked the first Bubsy game as a kid, and still think it holds up as a solid little platformer with a surprising degree of polish, but Bubsy was very much supposed to be the next Sonic, and he ended up just being the next James Pond/Aero the Acrobat.

secret-of-evermore-cover.jpg

I never played this game as a kid, so I can't speak to its quality, but I remember it getting a lot of coverage at the time for being a Secret of Mana pseudo-sequel and simply for being a product of Square's "Golden Age" of SNES instant classics. I know it was something of an anomaly for being American developed, but it likely suffered due to the fact that 1) it came out just a few months after Chrono Trigger, and 2) Illusion of Gaia, released the year prior, looked and felt more like a Mana sequel than Evermore.

This topic is about games that were hyped and then forgotten.

Forgotten. Go look at some of the games suggested in this topic. Brute Force? Darkwatch? Heart of Darkness? All of those basically dropped off the face of the Earth.

Black and White, man some of the hyperbole for that was amazing.

The Movies?
The Movies is a good pull. I remember all the hype around the movie creation features. And then nothing after launch.

My nominee is for us old timers: Outpost from Sierra Online. It sounded amazing on paper, but was a complete wreak when it was released.
