Hoo boy, I'm gonna show my age here:
The N64 Robotech game
Originally an N64 launch title, then a launch window title, then delayed to eternity and finally put out of its misery. I don't think we ever saw anything more than a blurry 72dpi screenshot from the back of the N64 box.
Honorable re-mentions of others listed in this thread:
WeaponLord
I remember being hyped about this because it was made by ex-Capcom folks who thought they were going to revolutionize fighting games with their unique command input mechanism (IIRC, you would hold the attack button, do the d-pad motions, then release to execute the move).
Since no other game has ever attempted the same control scheme, I think it's safe to say it failed.

I remember there being some huge hype for this game, I think because (at the time) everyone kept talking up the game's visuals and unique premise and then come release there was nothing.

State of Emergency no doubt.
Goddamnit. Is it so hard to understand that if you have to preface your post with "for me personally", you're in the wrong thread?
Dante's Infereno may be a good one. I don't know if was being hyped to be the next big game per say, but there was a lot of buzz surrounding it due to the odd nature of it. But after release, all interest in it seemed to die. I recall it may have gotten some DLC, but still, all the buzz evaporated quickly.
Nah. It hasn't been forgotten. People always bring it up to talk about how shitty it was
I also have a hard time believing that Otogi was massively hyped behind a huge marketing campaign.
I remember this one and don't recall it controlling all that badly, actually. It was easier to get moves off more reliably than, say, Eternal Champions. But in an era when everything was being turned into 1-on-1 fighters, it just wasn't enough to catch on.WeaponLord

That's actually quite the opposite: Otogi Myth of Demons and Otogi II Immortal Warriors are both underrated games. I don't even remember seeing advertisements for them. They were praised by both the press and gamers, but there was no hype for them.
Haze.
Kameo?
The hype was real.

This is one of the few good Xbone examples. I remember tons of hype when announced, yet nobody talks about it. I don't even know if it was any good or not.![]()
Crimson Dragon
The Heaven's Gate of video games. Yes, I'd say this qualifies.
Stop it, Black is still amazing!
However the creator of Black made a new game late last gen to, they even used that to
Sell it lol, turned out to be ass grease!, bet you dont even remember it lol.
wtf was Haze though, Sony paying of all people Ubi to make a fps exclusive was pathetic, atleast get Crytek to do a game like Haze.
This nails it. The hype around The Bouncer was absolutely crazy. It was Square's first PS2 game when they were still putting out almost nothing but amazing games, and the game looked gorgeous in previews. It could probably be labeled as one of the biggest disappointments as well.
Hellgate London. Was hyped as the next Diablo.
Was going to post this: it might as well be called Rise of the Robots: The Thread. I guess most here are a bit too young to even know about this, but the hype surrounding this game was literally unprecedented; I don't think a single game, ever, up to that point, had gotten such a ridiculously massive amount of press hype (remember, this was a post-Street Fighter 2 world, and it STILL got more hype than any version of Street Fighter). Then it came out and it was a painfully unplayable mess. Magazines all around the world pretended the game didn't exist (except to take potshots at it once in a while), probably so as not to be shamed by association because of their obviously unwarranted hype. This example was burned in my mind as the most amazing disparity between pre- and post-release coverage; no game before or since was so mind-boggling, not even Spore.
Also, in the case of Spore, and unlike most examples in this thread, this disparity was entirely justified; the game that was announced to the public was utterly different and much more complex than what was finally released.
I remember the game Incoming being hyped as a 3DFx showcase game, then never mentioned again.
You can buy it on GOG. It seems to be still a cool arcade vehicle action game.

Stealth Titanfall thread? People saying watch dogs...8 million shipped says otherwise.
I was pretty excited for this one. Is it s worth ten bucks on steam? It did get a spiritual successor though.
Warframe. That game will definitely be not forgotten, and pretty much delivers on the original vision of the game.
