palpatine doesn't convince anakin of anything. anakin sucumbs to the dark side with the maiming of mace after which point he starts along his own agenda. the whole "jedi turned against the republic" thing is a facade he puts on for palpatine and padme to hide his true intentions (with palpatine at least).
