It's a good entry point and is basically the prologue of the story covered
1000 episodes is unrealistic for most, but 1000 manga chapters is easily manageable over a couple months reading and is the best way to enjoy it

There are a few things I noticed in the first episode:
- there is some mcu humour in there and it feels out of place
- they changed Alvida's delusion of thinking she's the most beautiful woman to the most powerful woman. This makes zero sense when you know what happens later. I guess they didn't want to make fun of fat people
- they turned Nami into a martial artist
- shouldn't gold roger be mentioning his treasure in one place, hence one piece, in his dying words?
- what the fuck was that scene with helmeppo showing his ass?
Overall, they tried hard but I am not sure Oda was involved in this. Or maybe his English isn't that good and things have been lost in transition.

I thought this too so went and looked it up, but apparently there is a bunch of different versions of what he said, and he almost never says that specifically. Seems only in an adaptation of romance dawn did he use the one place verbiage. I think the old dub also had him use something like that as well, but not sure. 1st manga I've looked up also doesn't use that verbiage, rather just:
I have gathered everything in this world and already hidden them in "that" place.

MCU humour is why I won't be watching it.
One Piece dialogue is from the heart but this is full of snark.
Also did they skip Chou Chou? I heard he only has a cameo, a tragedy with a dog would definitely net a larger audience.
Welp finally finished it and now I'm off to see Equalizer 3. My review of the film is that the show is pretty enjoyable and felt like a fan made reimagining of the show with a larger budget. I was flip floppin on if it was woke. I was okay with most of the race swapping. Arlong honestly got annoying after a while with his rants. Although with his backstory in the manga which you find out later on it does make sense. Honestly the anime and manga pretty much did everything better and I'd just prefer anime movies of the Zoro, Usopp, and Nami arc. The anime is far more comedic and touching at the same time while having better action. The Koby actor seems to have gotten a big push lately since he was also in the last evil dead movie.
As long as you don't focus too much on the anime and just set about enjoying it then it isnt' too bad. Like I said earlier, I enjoyed it. I'd just give this a rating of B.

The fights later on with Zoro and Sanji were better but yeah those earlier episode fight scenes were pretty bad.

I think this is the absolute key to enjoyment for live action anime, and unfortunately anime fans are usually too deep into their fandom to do this.
The first time I noticed this was with the Rurouni Kenshin movies. Anime fans of the series would pick them apart even though they were good on their own merit.

I've only read the manga up until the arlong arc, and that was 20 years ago so I don't remember too much. Remembered the broad strokes of the beginning, and it was enjoyable.
Regarding the netflix, I watched the first episode. It's weird. It's corny. It's cheap looking. But it's also sort of endearing. I'd watch more.

Yeah, this is my issue now that a few hours have passed after watching it. I know that there are tons of things to criticize the show for but I just don't want to dwell on the negative right now since I enjoyed the show for the most part.

Does netflix stream this at a lower bitrate on purpose if you don't have the UHD sub? It's not going higher than 0.53mbps for me, while other shows stream at least double that.

I watched the first episode last night finally and thought it was pretty good surprisingly. Is it just me or does the budget in this seem pretty massive overall? Hopefully it doesn't become too expensive for Netflix to keep filming

IIRC, the budget for this season was even bigger than a season of Game of Thrones. They definitely out the money into it. One Piece is a big deal internationally, so I think there's a good chance it's worth the investment.

Ya I was surprised by the detail in all the sets. Gum gum cgi could be a little better but I'm happy how most of it came out overall. The fight choreography was actually pretty good too.
The actors were great all around. I'd say Zoro is the weakest actor so far but I don't think he was bad.

So far it seems to respect the source material, and doesn't shy away from being as silly as it needs to be to translate it into live action faithfully. And it's well made. So, they may have actually found a winning formula. It's probably one of the least likely IPs to adapt into live action successfully, too, so I'm impressed.

That's a nope for me. Everything in Baratie felt a lot more muted in this live action. From the joking around of those two chefs, to the farewell, and even the anime zoro's mihawk emotional drama was better.

One piece is definitely "woke" depending on your definition.
Its heavily anti-slavery, pro-diversity, pro-equality. Fishman racism being a large part of the series. And there's are multiple trans/drag characters with bon clay and Ivanov being represented very positively and shown respect by Luffy who referred to them as "Chan", which is a female pronoun.
The last arc ended in two characters who use the bath with the opposite sex; okiku who is a male that identifies as a female- baths with the girls. While yamoto who is a female who identifies as a male character named oden- baths with the guys (much to sanjis happiness)

That sort of success is at least a 3 season guarantee. They have a winning formula and fan feedback on how to improve for season 2. Now we just have to hope that they don't pull a 'Game of Thrones' or 'Witcher' and spiral out of control with too many creative changes.
I want them to actually pull it all off. The whole series.

People don't think that One Piece is "woke" because it never really shames or look down on the reader. There is no "bad type of person" who is excluded from enjoying One Piece. The values it shares are ones that the vast majority of readers align with.

Nothing woke about positive depictions of so-called trans women.
