One Piece (Live Action) | Review Thread

As someone who has never seen (or read) One Piece, the only thing I know about it is that its been running for eons and has something like 1000 episodes. I plan on checking this out because it looks fun, but I also like shows that have clearly defined middle/beginning/ends, so I'm really not sure what they ultimately plan to do with this in terms of an end game.
It's a good entry point and is basically the prologue of the story covered

1000 episodes is unrealistic for most, but 1000 manga chapters is easily manageable over a couple months reading and is the best way to enjoy it

There are a few things I noticed in the first episode:
- there is some mcu humour in there and it feels out of place
- they changed Alvida’s delusion of thinking she’s the most beautiful woman to the most powerful woman. This makes zero sense when you know what happens later. I guess they didn’t want to make fun of fat people
- they turned Nami into a martial artist
- shouldn’t gold roger be mentioning his treasure in one place, hence one piece, in his dying words?
- what the fuck was that scene with helmeppo showing his ass?

Overall, they tried hard but I am not sure Oda was involved in this. Or maybe his English isn’t that good and things have been lost in transition.

I thought this too so went and looked it up, but apparently there is a bunch of different versions of what he said, and he almost never says that specifically. Seems only in an adaptation of romance dawn did he use the one place verbiage. I think the old dub also had him use something like that as well, but not sure. 1st manga I've looked up also doesn't use that verbiage, rather just:
I have gathered everything in this world and already hidden them in "that" place.

MCU humour is why I won't be watching it.

One Piece dialogue is from the heart but this is full of snark.

Also did they skip Chou Chou? I heard he only has a cameo, a tragedy with a dog would definitely net a larger audience.

Welp finally finished it and now I'm off to see Equalizer 3. My review of the film is that the show is pretty enjoyable and felt like a fan made reimagining of the show with a larger budget. I was flip floppin on if it was woke. I was okay with most of the race swapping. Arlong honestly got annoying after a while with his rants. Although with his backstory in the manga which you find out later on it does make sense. Honestly the anime and manga pretty much did everything better and I'd just prefer anime movies of the Zoro, Usopp, and Nami arc. The anime is far more comedic and touching at the same time while having better action. The Koby actor seems to have gotten a big push lately since he was also in the last evil dead movie.

As long as you don't focus too much on the anime and just set about enjoying it then it isnt' too bad. Like I said earlier, I enjoyed it. I'd just give this a rating of B.
Watched first 2 episodes, not complete shit but the fighting scene feels cheap AF.
The fights later on with Zoro and Sanji were better but yeah those earlier episode fight scenes were pretty bad.

I think this is the absolute key to enjoyment for live action anime, and unfortunately anime fans are usually too deep into their fandom to do this.

The first time I noticed this was with the Rurouni Kenshin movies. Anime fans of the series would pick them apart even though they were good on their own merit.

I've only read the manga up until the arlong arc, and that was 20 years ago so I don't remember too much. Remembered the broad strokes of the beginning, and it was enjoyable.

Regarding the netflix, I watched the first episode. It's weird. It's corny. It's cheap looking. But it's also sort of endearing. I'd watch more.

About half way through. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen, and it's certainly better than Cowboy Bebop. That's my review so far.

Yeah, this is my issue now that a few hours have passed after watching it. I know that there are tons of things to criticize the show for but I just don't want to dwell on the negative right now since I enjoyed the show for the most part.

I have no intention of watching this but I wanted it to fail hard.

We're getting less chapters because Oda is too busy with this show; more seasons doesn't bode well for the manga. :messenger_fearful:
That's complete BS. The show has been completed for a while.
Any input from oda would've been done years ago during the writing and filming phases.

Oda is releasing less chapters because he had eye surgery recently.

The guy has been at it non stop for over 25+ years, let him breathe and do whatever he wants you asshole

If you cared about Oda, you would want this live action to do well

"If it's woke"?

One Piece has been "woke" since day one of the manga

Just finished the entire season and I absolutely loved it. The ending gave me goosebumps.

It's honestly exciting to see the story of one piece retold in another medium. I loved seeing a new interpretation of all my favourite characters, places and events. I also surprisingly enjoyed most of the changes. I think they work in making the season feel cohesive. And they feel like a nice surprise when you don't exactly know what they're gonna do.

The crews chemistry is fantastic. They completely nailed their dynamic even though they are not exactly like their anime counterparts, they're still very well done on their own way.

The villains are great to. Morgan, Buggy and Arlong are especially captivating every time they appear on screen.

As a long time one piece fan, this is absolutely a win.

9/10.
Smoker at the end burning Luffy's wanted post was so HYPE! Sad we'll never see Gaimon though, at least they paid an homage of him at the Baratie paintings.

I think this show needs time for people to truly dig it

Now they made Crocodile a girl?? WTF was that about??

I'm not that far off yet, but what? This shouldn't even cover Crocodile

In the Roger execution scene when they showed young Mihawk...etc there was a hint

Does netflix stream this at a lower bitrate on purpose if you don't have the UHD sub? It's not going higher than 0.53mbps for me, while other shows stream at least double that.

My wife and I watched the first 3 episodes last night. We both enjoyed it and it was pretty much what we expected. I think it was better than Cowboy Bebop which I also liked.

That’s some heavy entitlement.

I watched the first episode last night finally and thought it was pretty good surprisingly. Is it just me or does the budget in this seem pretty massive overall? Hopefully it doesn’t become too expensive for Netflix to keep filming

IIRC, the budget for this season was even bigger than a season of Game of Thrones. They definitely out the money into it. One Piece is a big deal internationally, so I think there’s a good chance it’s worth the investment.

Ya I was surprised by the detail in all the sets. Gum gum cgi could be a little better but I’m happy how most of it came out overall. The fight choreography was actually pretty good too.

The actors were great all around. I’d say Zoro is the weakest actor so far but I don’t think he was bad.

So far it seems to respect the source material, and doesn’t shy away from being as silly as it needs to be to translate it into live action faithfully. And it’s well made. So, they may have actually found a winning formula. It’s probably one of the least likely IPs to adapt into live action successfully, too, so I’m impressed.

I could never get into the anime, like at all.

Watched the first episode of this and it was corny as fuck. Guess it just ain't for me. All good

what are you talking about?
I'mma say it. The Baratie portion in the live action is better than the anime/manga
That's a nope for me. Everything in Baratie felt a lot more muted in this live action. From the joking around of those two chefs, to the farewell, and even the anime zoro's mihawk emotional drama was better.

One piece is definitely "woke" depending on your definition.

Its heavily anti-slavery, pro-diversity, pro-equality. Fishman racism being a large part of the series. And there's are multiple trans/drag characters with bon clay and Ivanov being represented very positively and shown respect by Luffy who referred to them as "Chan", which is a female pronoun.
The last arc ended in two characters who use the bath with the opposite sex; okiku who is a male that identifies as a female- baths with the girls. While yamoto who is a female who identifies as a male character named oden- baths with the guys (much to sanjis happiness)

If one piece released for the first time in the modern day. People here would absolutely be complaining that it's woke.

The haters and doubters are in the mud TBH

Even my mum asked to watch it lol 🤣

That sort of success is at least a 3 season guarantee. They have a winning formula and fan feedback on how to improve for season 2. Now we just have to hope that they don’t pull a ‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘Witcher’ and spiral out of control with too many creative changes.

I want them to actually pull it all off. The whole series.

People don't think that One Piece is "woke" because it never really shames or look down on the reader. There is no "bad type of person" who is excluded from enjoying One Piece. The values it shares are ones that the vast majority of readers align with.

Woke is leftwing ideology, read about the Soviet Union for an actual display of 'woke' or left values. Now if 'anti-slavery, pro-diversity, pro-equality' means left totalitarian shitholes then to you OP is indeed woke and for some on the right too in the opposite way. For anti-totalitarians and believers in liberty (in the classical liberal sense) anti-slavery is a core value and has nothing to do with the left. Pro-diversity is a core value if it means respecting the dignity and rights of all people and not a mask for race demagoguary and bullying. Pro-equality is a core value if it means equality of rights and opportunity and not the right to punish and murder targets of your envy and sadism.

Not to mention Oda's Che Guevara photos

Can't say I expected better. Typical multi-millionaire artist living in liberal democracy idolizing totalitarian and genocidal fascist shit stain. I guess this is the 'anti-slavery' and 'woke' Raonak talked about, enslaving your own population in their own country.

The amount of mental gymnastics to shill for the live action One Piece is insane. Lmao.

Also Yamato doesn't identify as a boy, Yamato just wants to be Oden. Okiku is trans, Yamato isn't. Definitely spent too much time on Twitter.

Nothing woke about positive depictions of so-called trans women. There's a lot of space between genuine bigoted hatred of LGBTWHATEVER and the leftwing view where thinking anybody opposed to drag queens reading pornography to children is a fascist, or anybody opposed to pumping confused and mentally ill kids with life changing and irreversible hormones is acting on 'hatred,' or anybody refusing to accept gender pseudoscience is bigoted, etc...
