Opera vs Firefox vs IE -- RE: memory usage

So I'm at work and kind of bored so I decide to test these three browsers on how much memory they suck. I've opened one instance of firefox and opera and opened two tabs in each, one was gmail and the other GAF. Then I opened two instances of IE and one window was gmail and other was GAF so I should have this fairly equal.

The PC i'm on here at work is a PIII 1000mHz with 256RAM

After everything being open for about half an hour and me jumping back and forth between all of the windows the memory goes like this:

Opera.exe 47,748 K
iexplore .exe 26,988 K
firefox.exe 25,476 K
iexplore.exe 22,538 K

For some reason I thought I heard someone say firefox sucked more than Opera. Is this even a fair test?

The problem with Firefox isn't the browser, its just that people use some of the most highly inefficient techniques when using the plugins and many people have 10-15 plugins installed at once which drive up the memory requirements for the browser as well as many of the plugins having their own event loops making the browser slower. Its a vicious cycle. I've worked with many people who were complaining about Firefox performance or memory use and I told them "okay, uninstall some plugins" and suddenly they thought it was great again :D

I have zero Firefox plugins installed, but the damn thing sure does love to memory leak. One time I came back home to it open using 1.8GB of virtual memory. o_O

There's something else wrong. I've never heard of such a thing.

If you're not the type to leave programs open for a long time, you won't notice it, but Firefox definitely has a slow leak in it. I think it's also made worse by having multiple windows (not tabs) open. Once you get up to 5+ the leak becomes very apparent.

I tend to leave my computer running with (Firefox open) for a while and have never had such a huge hit, even with tons of tabs open and even though I use a handful of memory-sucking extensions/etc.

With my install/config though, FF does consume a lot more resources than Opera (I'm at 95,420k while I type this, with 24 tabs open).

avant is 46k for me, and I've had it open for probably about a week now never closing.
