Seriously, what's the big deal about that picture? Why do people think celebrities in public settings acting goofy is so unbelievable?

Not to mention it was a Samsung advertisement.

My question is, why did the word selfie only catch on in the past few years when people have been taking pictures of themselves since portable cameras were invented?

Probably because it was during the actual Academy Awards with a shit-ton of Academy Award Winners.

Because we're finally at a point where just about everyone has a portable camera (aka cell phone with camera in it) and social networking.

is selfi short for selfish?

It's probably a hypocoristic shortening of "self-portrait" first coined by Australians.

The popularity of the word is probably directly tied to the rise in popularity of Twitter, and then Instagram. The global reach of those services probably allow a word like "selfie" to permeate all forms of the English language at warp speed. Without them, the word would probably still be local, and most of us would be saying what we said before Twitter, "I took a picture of myself..."

I prefer this one:

for his next film, leo should play a character whos an actor, that is obsessed with winning an oscar. the character's obsession will be his eventual downfall.

wait I think i have seen that movie before.

wow leo really does play the same role over and over again.

I don't know, but a lot of people don't believe it. Hence the Jennifer Lawrence "schtick" complaints people always make.

Lupita's brother just jumps in with them and then basically covers up Angelina Jolie's face lol, all while she's so far in the back you barely see her.

That said, the amount of people who say it's the best photo ever taken just shows how celebrity obsessed America is.
