Oscar nominations thread

Arguments about Pixar's best film aside, I think WALL•E was the best movie of the year and deserves a nomination at the very least.

I'm gonna predict WALL•E will get a Best Picture nomination. It has gotten too many awards and has been too praised to be snubbed.
I thought the category for Best Animated Picture meant animated films are no longer able to be nominated for Best Picture.

Nope.

Just like the Best Foreign Language category did not disqualify Life is Beautiful and Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon for Best Picture.

Ah, I knew those but didn't think it applied to animated. Neato. Wall-E rocked.

The Dark Knight for best picture and director because I am cynical enough to believe the Oscars need a ratings boost and this is a good way for it to happen.

I must be the only one here that thought WALL-E was just "OK". :lol #10 on my 2008 Top 10 list so far (and still have a lot more to see)

I've seen it twice now and I really don't think it is that special of a movie. The fact that they were able to make a robot like Wall-E display so many emotions is quite an accomplishment and they deserve praise for that, but I didn't really like the movie itself as much as past Pixar works. In fact, I genuinely do not like the portion of the movie after Wall-E leaves Earth. The change in setting just didn't work for me and the humans ruined the whole thing in my book. I think the movie would have been far superior and even a possible contender for best movie if it took place entirely on Earth and focused on Wall-E and Eve.

So far my favorite movie from last year is The Dark Knight, but I don't really know if is Best Picture material. Heath Ledger definitely deserves recognition, and the movie looked quite amazing, but it would seem a bit strange for it to get the award in my opinion. Unfortunately I haven't been able to see The Wrestler, Slumdog Millionaire or Benjamin Button due to the movies not being released on home video yet and still not being released in Japanese theatres. I'm really looking forward to Benjamin Button but I still have to wait a few weeks.

Well duh.

And animated pics can still be nominated for best picture, although it's only ever actually happened once.

and that was before the special category was created for it.

Now, even if a very special animated movie comes out, they can not nominate it for best picture and tell themselves its ok because it has it's own special category.

To me, Wall-E was a great kids movie that adults could also enjoy. While Ratatouille was a great adults movie that kids could also enjoy.

I feel exactly the opposite on this point. Wall-E feels much much more adult than Ratatouille ever did for me.

It's always seemed to me that the easiest way to get nominated for an Oscar is simply to make and release an animated movie because so few are released and they need to make up the numbers when nomination time comes. Jimmy Neutron, Brother Bear and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron all got nominated FFS. What next? Delgo?

FWIW, my kids don't like Ratatouille at all (ages six and three). They love nearly all animated movies and cartoons.

Of course, I couldn't stand that movie either, so maybe they got it from dad.

My picks for the nominations (lol):

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionare, Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon, Milk

Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Leo DiCaprio
Best Actress: Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Melissa Leo
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Josh Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., someone else
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, Viola Davis, Marissa Tomei, Kate Winslet, someone else

Holy shit, seriously? lol

Get rid of that avatar and I'll whip something up.

But really, it's going to be a few minutes. The blogs are getting hammered, so really waiting on Variety or the AP.

I'd rather defend Hurley and never know who even WINS IN MARCH.

;D

8 nominations for Dark Knight not bad. Was hoping it would get in for Best Picture, especially over the very weakly compared Milk and Reader.

Benjamin Button? Really? I thought it was very good, but not amazing. I'd like to see an argument as to why it should be considered for the Oscar.

I really hope Slumdog wins.

TDK was NEVER going to win best picture anyway so stop getting all worked up over nothing.
Maybe not, but it was the better film out of the current nominees. The only two films I would put close to it were Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler.

Nice try Academy, 8 isn't good enough. Now you're going to have to choose to save one of them.

Ignoring for a second the snubs in the major categories, what is with only three songs being nominated for original song (you can go through the awards on Oscar.com, just no list)? And they snubbed SPRINGSTEEN in the process. Don't get me wrong: I love those songs from Slumdog, but how strange!

I've seen Slumdog, Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button and they so do not deserve a BP nomination. Then again it has been a fairly bad year.

That's the real tragedy here.

The Wrestler got fucked outside of the acting noms. =\
