Oscar nominations thread

Man, it has to be a shitty year when only one film in my top 20 made the nominations and that film was the Reader which most people think is oscar bait.

I think Robert Downey Jr gets best supporting actor, because he was a dude disguised as a dude who was playing another dude.
I think its a shame that he wont get an award, not that it would be better than Heath but I think he should be awarded for his brilliant role.

Gran Torino wasn't nominated for ANYTHING? That's pretty shocking. I thought Clint at LEAST deserved a best actor nod.

And I'm glad that The Dark Knight didn't get a nod for best picture. It certainly was a great movie but people were getting a little too caught up in the hype (shocking, right?) Time for a reality check.

Robert Downey Jr. getting nominated for best supporting actor is awesome :lol

And TDK getting few nominations was expected, except for the TDK geeks. Ledger will probably win just for various publicity/marketing/money/business reasons.

*sigh*

Oh, Academy. smh

Disappointed that TDK didn't get a Best Picture or Director nomination (at the least!), but I'm SO happy for Heath.

Nice try Academy, 8 isn't good enough. Now you're going to have to choose to save one of them.

The films were fine, it's the choices that were shitty.

I mean, The Reader? Seriously? I don't care what people think of TDK, it was, at least, one of the best-reviewed movies of the year and certainly deserves a best picture nomination ahead of The Reader.

Reality check when it didnt get a Nom? WTF. What.The.Fuck. When did people started relying on the Academy to deliver them a reality check.

Also I dont think the Academy will ever reward a super-hero movie.

edit: Does anybody have a Nomination count for each movie.

What's your top 20?

What's with the Wall*E fascination everybody? It's not even the best animated feature of the year, Waltz with Bashir takes that crown :p

It's funny how you take the Oscars so seriously.. it's like you think it gives films some sort of objective legitimacy. I wish I could extend my hands off your screen and squeeze your nipples. Time for a reality check.

Yeah, I meant it was a shitty year for the academy. 2008 had tons of great films. Did you see the Reader? Very very excellent first act, sort of awkward but unsettling second act, redeeming third act and a satisfying conclusion. Then I thought about how these were stages in the main protaganists' life which I thought that it was really great storytellng filmmaking techniques to make it like that. I haven't gone to sleep yet, I am sure this sounds like a mess.

I haven't counted everything, but Benjamin Button leads with 13 I think.

Shit list, as expected.

Tarajip Henson for best supporting actor is a joke.

Benjamin Button over Dark Knight or Wall-E for best picture is also a joke.

The Academy is so out of touch with reality, I can barely stand watching the damn thing anymore.

Well that sucks.

Let's move to 2010. WATCHMEN FOR BEST PICTURE!!!!! IT'S SO GOOD IT BLOWS AWAY ALL THESE OTHER MOVIES.

Off the top of my head:

Button 13
Slumdog 10

Not sure otherwise. I'm sure a full list will pop up.

Wait, did you like the films in your Top 20? And if so, why was it a shitty year?

Out of curiosity, what's on your list, if you don't mind my asking?

I'm a big Batman fan, but even I can be down to earth enough to realize though TDK was a great, if not the best, comic book movie out right now I wouldn't be screaming for a Best Picture nom.

On the other hand that doesn't excuse some of the other choices they made. Getting real tired of these end of the year pretentious oscar baits.

Well on the bright side, Best Picture/Director/Adapted Screenplay won't be going to Oscar bait.

It would have been nice to see TDK get nominated for Best Picture, but I wasn't shocked. I'm glad to see Heath Ledger in the supporting role nod. Hope he wins.

Benjamin Button fucking sucked... it was well made, ill give it that. But the movie does not deserve all those nominations...especially best picture.

Benjamin Button is the perfect example of how ridiculous the nomination process is. Gimmicky drama + neato special effects = Oscar nomination.

At this point, we shouldn't have to pretend that dramas are inherently 'more important' films than action movies or animated films. Benjamin Button was freaking bland, the acting was ok, but nothing special, and the script almost seemed hammy at a lot of points. Its just not that good of a movie.

All I have to say is thank God GAF's opinion has no bearing on anything outside of the Internet.

Not to mention Benjamin Button really isn't that good.

Havent you learned yet that the Oscars arent so much about rewarding the best films of the year as they are about rewarding people they should have previously? I take the BB love as an attempt to atone for the unfathomable shutting out of Zodiac.

zodiac was one of the three most well-crafted movies of 2007, and possibly my personal favorite. it's sad to see something so complex, deep, and well-paced get outshone by a saccharine forrest gump redux. even if that saccharine forrest gump redux has some really great moments.

Fucking truth. Zodiac was probably my third favorite last year, and it got completely snubbed. This movie is just :/

Predictable nominations in a shitty year. Button and Slumdog are so overrated it isn't funny. ESPECIALLY Button. Frost/Nixon was truly excellent and deserves to be there. I haven't seen Milk or The Reader yet, so no comment on those. Can't wait to see Milk when it opens here next week.

Ron Howard really shouldn't be there. That's not to say i didn't appreciate what he did. It was easily his best directing job ever, but it was the fantastic script that made Frost/Nixon work. All the pieces were already in place to translate it to the screen. It really wasn't the type of film for a director to leave their stamp... and THANK FUCKING GOD he didn't.

I really would have liked to see Nolan get a nomination.

Ron Howard being nominated over Nolan really is an absolute slap in the face. I wouldn't even be complaining about TDK not getting a nomination for best picture if The Reader didn't smooch its way into fifth place with its convenient timing and subject matter.

Usually Academy noms are respectable even if actual winners are bunk. Guess we gotta lower the bar some more.

Brad Pitt wore makeup and squinted a lot in a Forrest Gump-ish ripoff with a mediocre script. Now thats a movie!!
I feel that it should have been nominated, I thought it was a damn good movie (and I hated Forrest Gump)... but The Reader? fuck that noise.

and for 2 straight years in a row the Academy does it wrong in the foreign film category. where the fuck is Let The Right One In?

I don't even want to fucking watch this year.

Robert Downey Jr, are you fucking kidding me?

Kind of surprised TDK got owned in every major category, despite being nominated by every freaking guild. :P Oh well. The oscars this year will be as boring an uninteresting as the Golden Globes.

edit: oh fuck not even for best score? This really sucks.

:lol True... though I don't dispute the best Director or Special Effects noms....everything else it doesn't deserve... and what was so great about Brad Pitts performance? and best screenplay.. are you fucking kidding me.

Haven't seen The Reader yet. A lot of the Oscar movies have seemed pretty boring this year. Even Slumdog was a letdown for me.

Absolutely nothing, he just showed up for work. The effects should definitely win an award IMO, but Benjamin Button was a completely passive character.

Hans Zimmer is a hack, he probably didn't even compose any of the TDK score. He has a whole shitload of people working for him who actually compose the music for him and get no credit. I'm sure that factored in somehow.
