Oscar Pistorius shoots girlfriend - dead

I haven't followed much, but just heard his version of events read by the magistrate - and it sounds believable, absolutely tragic though and will have to wait for the trial obviously.

Man this shit is heating up, I have no clue now how its gonna go

Haha it's like the prosecutor is on trial here.

Six hundred metres is a third of a mile.
I think screams and shouted arguments, especially if occurred over a longer period of time (over 10 minutes up to an hour, as stated), are likely to be heard, perhaps in patches, at 600 metres. Not enough to hear what is said, but to sense what is happening.

Then, a series of gunshots would retroactively confirm in one's mind that one had heard distant shouting/arguing.

What I find so baffling and excuse me if this has already been discussed.

When he shouted at what he thought was a burglar in his bathroom, did she not shout back? You'd think she would of.

Did he ever explain why she locked the bathroom door?

or is this considered normal by anyone that doesn't live with roommates that don't knock.

LOL he updated his webpage to give himself a good image:

It was like that before the murder:

I kind of feel bad every time the prosecution says he'll be a flight risk and then people in the court laugh. It's quite obvious they're laughing about his disability.

=(

There was an explanation given, but it still doesn't make any sense.

"She locked herself in to protect herself from the third person, the supposed intruder" yet she only would have done so based on shouts from the accused. But yeah, there is no plausible shouted phrases that would lead her to logically decide to do this without querying or responding.

...and not about his running ability? I wouldn't be surprised if there are people laughing at his disability, but is it not just as likely that they're laughing at the idea of an athlete being a "flight risk"?

That doesn't make much sense, pretty much everywhere on the Internet there are jokes about his disability.

Also here's the horrible story of a paraplegic man waiting for his trial in South African prisons:

I'm sorry, but that just sounds too superhuman to me. I know what 600 metres is like on a daily basis because that's about the distance from my house to the nearest school, and I'm very confident that you would not be able to hear any sort of human voice at that kind of distance no matter how loud it is.

Why are people calling it a murder and why are some gaffers calling him a murderer? Presumed innocent before proven guilty anyone ?

Same as I was thinking. From what has been released through this stage in the courts doesn't sound good for Oscar, and his version doesn't seem very likely, but we haven't even hit the full trial yet.

Bail granted anyway.

His story may sound stupid but then, stupid shit does happen. I do think he's guilty but perhaps we should wait for the trial.

I still think that at worst and most likely he's a cold blooded murderer and at best a nut job who is a danger to society, how do we know he won't get spooked again in the meantime? Maybe someone will scare him when he's driving and he'll have to run them down to be safe

I take it all legally owned guns will have to be handed in in the meantime?

When you don't recognize South Africa's sovereignty and ignore their courts and laws you can apply your local justice to his side of the story, and then he would be convicted of murder. In many countries you can't simply shoot a burglar without your safety being threatened, especially one you haven't even visually identified as such. For all you know it's the neighbor with alzheimers lost again.

I'm kinda hoping he's paranoid enough to flee to a non extradition country.

Upon payment of the 100,000 rand he must be released with the following conditions:

• He appears in court on 4 June at 8.30am.

• He surrenders all passports.

• He refrains from applying for any passports.

• He refrains from entering any airport.

• He surrenders all firearms.

• He refrains from possessing any firearms.

`• He refrains from talking to any witnesses for the prosecution.

• He will have a probation officer and correctional official from the date of release until the conclusion of the case.

• He shall inform the official all his movements and ask for permission for any journeys outside Pretoria.

• He shall give them a phone number and must be contactable day and night.

• He must not be charged with an offence of violence against women.

• He must not use drugs or alcohol.

• He must not return to his home and not make contact with any residents of his estate except the Stander family.

1m rand is £73,750 ($112,000 US dollars)

Epic bail hearing. I know that the word epic is frequently misused on the internet, but it is the most appropriate word in this context. Bail hearings literally last about 5 minutes in the UK, and in this case the Magistrate was touching on 7th century English Common law!

Why is it so laughable that the neighbours (only 600m away) may have accurately heard loud shouts and gunfire, in a silent-at-night gated community?

It's close to half a mile (edit: over a third of a mile). From inside a house. I have trouble accurately hearing things from down the street. Half a mile, in a house, it'll be muffled as hell. You could be down the block (less than quarter of a mile), hear a gunshot and wonder what it was. You may have a good idea of what it was but we are trying to gauge certainty. It's not about what it was but was he certain. He heard yells and screams and gunshots accurately at that distance, all while it was in a house? It'll be like that old lady scene in My Cousin Vinny x 1000.

I have to say, I'm upset with this whole thing. Not sure if I would be better off not knowing all this. Allowing the defense and prosecution to make their full case, then I can read about this. It's a joke. The lead detective has just been taken off the case because he got drunk and shot at a car? We, as civilized humans, cannot allow the police to act like this. It's not face palm worthy. It should be undeniably a major issue for police that doesn't take 4 years to resolve. I need my police to have standards and morals far above the normal human. I can't take them seriously when they so cavalierly dishonor their profession. It's completely unacceptable and puts them into a bad light. Without this info, he seemed hell bent on following the evidence to a certain conclusion and this only raises my concern he was not interested in the truth.

I know we have come to accept bullshit from the police but that questions any conclusions from the police, in my perspective and just makes it harder to come to the truth. My gut reaction is we need to move to a point where this damages their career in police work.

Can't they just reenact the crime and test if it's plausible?

I know how far a quarter mile is due to drag racing and even then there's no way you'd hear someone screaming or shouting at the finish line if you were stood at the start line, even a gunshot would be difficult to make out.
