I'm kinda surprised I didn't see Ben Foster garner a nod. I mean, I've seen him in stuff (two of them being an X-Men and Punisher movie...) but I feel I didn't recognize him in Hell or High Water. He stood out for me in that regard.

Best Documentary Feature
I'm ruling out O.J. [Made in America] even though I still have an hour of it left to watch — maybe for younger people this is new stuff, but for me it's just reliving a part of the past I don't need to relive. I was disappointed with I Am Not Your Negro — I was really looking forward to learning more about James Baldwin's life, rather than his ideas (which I already knew), because when I first came to New York as a young actress, he was such an avant-garde playwright and fascinating guy. Three-quarters of Ava DuVernay's movie [13th] was wonderful, but the last quarter was so preachy that I felt like I was hit over the head, which was a turnoff. They did a really good job with Fire at Sea, except I hated that little kid in it — killing birds and cutting up cacti and all of that. I voted for Life, Animated because I thought it was a positive story, how the parents took a massive challenge and made something of it.

Dismissing one of the best pictures of the year because you thought it was gonna be about something else? Fuck outta here with this crap. I made a podcast with a buddy in which I made a case for Hell or Highwater being the true dark horse and positioning it as favorite for snatching best original screenplay. Glad I wasn't too far from how things are shaping up to be, that movie is criminally underlooked.

Though imo La La Land is just flat out gorgeous as well.

It has great music (I love the opening especially) and pays homage to classic Hollywood romances even as it subverts their cliches. But the aspect that really spoke to me was the theme of creative people striving for their passions and sharing in the frustrations, disappointments, wrong turns, and constant temptation to quit or settle for less that only someone who is devoted to the pursuit of art themselves can fully understand.

I didn't find La La Land to be pretentious at all. That word is so overused in amateur film criticism it's practically lost all meaning.

All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

During finals, all Oscar categories are on the ballot for voting members.
