With an attitude like this, I can't imagine why people find pit defenders so abrasive.

The flip side of the coin is??

I have seen more abrasive attacks and blanket generalizations saying all pit owners are ass holes and pieces of shit for even thinking of owning one.

So who is abrasive again?

People are being abrasive because others are making all kinds of crazy judgements about them and their family members (yes, people see dogs as their family) to the point of wishing those said family members didn't exist.

You don't seem to be helping by downplaying the post of a dude talking about his brother's beloved pet that died. It's condescending and insensitive.

Are you going to respond to my anecdotal evidence I posted earlier?

Sad incident that's a poor reflection on the owner. Also, surprised that it took 8 people to fend off 2 dogs, they didn't look terribly big from the video.

I've always hated dogs. They are dangerous creatures and this video is my worst nightmare. I've encountered bloodthirsty dogs like that and for some reason, they have always singled me out. Thankfully, I have always been able to either escape to a place inaccessible to them or their owners were able to pull them back.

These dogs in the video were incredibly strong though. I can't believe one of them was able to pull a full grown man on its own. That's scary. Why are animals this strong kept as pets?

I wonder if they're going to kill these dogs now.
Look at that front-yard. Fucking rednecks using Pits as their entertainment.
I'm waiting for the beautiful picture of a pit bull.
LMAO

Never change GAF.

@ Walpurgis

I don't think so, the dude was 62 and he looked pretty frail(based on his inability to defend himself). In my line of work, I've witnessed far younger men get blown over by a gust of wind.

Wrong on all 3 counts. A proper well proportioned pit is an incredibly beautiful dog.

I'm sorry, but if I were to be sent down instead of up in the afterlife for being a shitty human being, I think this is what the Satan's personal dog will look like. I can see this thing awaiting my arrival at the front gates of hell.

I was bitten by the family dog when I was about 9. She was well treated and never abused. In fact my older sister adored her. Unfortunately one night the dog decided she didn't want me, the youngest in the family, anywhere near her after I reached out to stroke her. It was one bite, probably meant as a warning, but it left two large puncture wounds in my forearm. And she was a golden retriever. Had she had been a pit bull type dog almost certainly the wound would have been more severe.

The point is any dog can bite if it chooses to. They have free will. They can choose to bite just as somone can choose to punch you. A dog that bites does not always mean it was treated bad. It may just mean it's a dog that bites. And certain breeds are more likely to do major harm depending on the size, strength and breed tempermant.

If anyone thinks the ONLY reason why a dog bites is because they were treated bad then they are wrong. It may be the reason 90% of the time but it is not the only reason.

I don't like the way people make them look. Here is mine.

The over muscular look and cropped ears I can't stand. Like I said before the actual American pit bull terrier is on the smaller side.

My mom got a Chow when I was around 7 or 8. He was the sweetest dog towards us. He was aggressive towards other dogs and really protective of my mom but he never bit anyone. I'm not delusional about the breed because I had a "good one". I know he was capable of fucking someone up in a heartbeat. In the hands of a neglectful and irresponsible owner, he likely would have.

Good game that.

As to why they're popular, it's fairly neighborhood-dependent. The shittier the area the more angry Pitbulls you're gonna see.

Anyone know why the breed and mixes are so populous?
They are actually the number 1 dog put down at kill shelters in North America and its because its "cool" to have a pitbull these days. There is simply too many of them without enough suitable owners out there. Humans made them a fad and now we are both paying the price.

Because there are a lot of mixes that look like pits, they are powerful looking dogs, and there are a bunch of them.
This is another thing.

You know what the pitbulls used to be known for? That Little Rascal dog. People had them as companion dogs, and they acted as such. The rare attacks went mostly unnoticed because that's all they were, rare. Now that they've developed a reputation due to a multitude of factors, they've ended up being owned by far more people looking for a fighting dog.

Meanwhile, when 101 Dalmatians hit and everyone wanted one of those, we learned a shit ton of people didn't know how to handle their temperament and they ended up being labeled pretty vicious too. But because of a cute Disney movie, even that was overshadowed by their friendly portrayal.
Oh my God, I love the look of Dalmatians, but dear Christ that breed needs good owners. Every Dalmatian I have ever met has been a violent, snappy asshole.

Some of the people in this thread make me sick. Sorry I have owned a pitbull before and he was the best dog I had. I have meet a lot of friendly pitbulls. The problem is yes they are very strong dogs so people use that in very bad ways. Though of course people just jump the gun. Not like a post on a forum is gonna change a person's opinion.

No I think the most frustrating part is the people calling for the breed to be killed off and posts of the like. It's understandable people get defensive when walking into a thread and are confronted with that.

I don't have a pit not do I prefer one breed of dog over another but some of the posts here make me a bit sad.

There's like 1 or 2 people in the entire thread who said that , yet you keep homing in on that like a pitbull on a toddler's face (sorry I had to:p)

How about forcing pitbull owners to neuter and spay their dogs to curb aggression. Don't the statistics show that it's mostly the intact males that murder people?

How about strictly regulating breeding so that only docile natured dogs are allowed to be bred (and their offspring sold) to maybe breed some of that fighting dog aggression out of them.

Since it's always the shitty owners and only the shitty owners, how about some restrictions on who can own one of these dogs.
Same can happen with other powerful breeds like GSD and rottweilers if you feel like your favorite breed is singled out,no skin off my back. (or off a toddler's face)

Still want to see anyone deny that :
-these dogs can do a ton of damage if they want to
-clearly many people aren't fit to own one

It's also funny to hear half of you say 'aggression has nothing to do with breeds' while the other half says 'they're such people loving and affectionate dogs'.
With some overlap ofcourse.

Mine's a lab/pit mix puppy. He's a massive attention whore and strong as fuck. Neighbors jokingly call him 'Samson' because when he sees them he wags his tail and wants to get near them so they pet him and I'm close to being dragged off.

I taught him since I've gotten him to not bite hard when he gets really playful. And when he starts to go overboard I tell him 'no biting' and he stops. Compare this to my cousin's pure lab who wasn't ever told no and when he starts biting hard it fucking leaves bruises.

This is a good post. As a big pit bull lover as myself, this is pretty much exactly what needs to happen. People should most definitely be neutering them. The breeders are a HUGE part of the problem as well. No, many people are not fit to own one. This is such a better solution than a breed ban.

I wouldn't be entirely against this. There are a lot of factors to keep in mind like viability as police/protection dogs and the fact it probably wouldn't be enforcable at the moment. Also good to keep in mind that docile genes doesn't guarantee a docile dog (that's where the nurture comes in).

not to mention this is what breeders have been doing for ages. How many dogs were originally bred to be fighting dogs?

The issue is that pitbulls aren't a breed themselves. I can't think of a breeder who would raise pedigree pitbulls. That'd be like people breeding pedigree labradoodles. Most shelters neuter the dogs.

Wtf that would be so much worse. Do you know how many dogs there are in the US alone?

Not only that, but dogs aren't wild animals. They are domesticated, and they aren't generally capable of surviving in the wild, on their own. Even feral dogs are almost entirely dependent on scavenging off of human refuse for survival. And that isn't even considering any number of long-haired breeds whose fur would become matted (which can be horrifically bad) in short order.

I meant those pit bulls.

I don't think that makes that much more sense.

Those pitbulls need to be put to sleep.

I am sorry but that is some bullshit on that video.

Fuck pitbulls

Love dogs but i never liked pitbulls.

100% agree. No offense to any pit bull owner, but to me, they just have something in them. When the switch goes off, they go prehistoric and any domestication goes bye bye. Would NEVER be within 50 feet of one of these dogs.

Remember when Dobermans were considered the vicious breed?

Remember when Rottweilers were considered the vicious breed?

Remember when German Shepherds were considered the vicious breed?

It's a goddamn cycle.
Guess what people, every breed has aggression issues, hell even St. Bernards are considered vicious to strangers unless trained.
Pit Bulls are no different. A dog can be an absolute sweetheart or a monster depending how you raise it; the same can be said for humans.

i like APBTs, but the 'nature vs nurture' debate is irrelevant and the difference between a pit and a GSD or doberman is miles apart. 99% of people should straight up not be allowed to own them and those that do should have to muzzle them in public, no question. i'm glad they are banned here (australia) because people are fucking idiots and can barely be held accountable to drive a car, let alone responsibly looking after a living, breathing animal.

And I'd own none of those breeds. Still remember being chased down the block as I was riding my bike by a German Shepard when I was a kid. Scariest moment of my life. Damn thing ran after me for like 3 blocks.

Yasss I'm all for large breed dog licenses and mandatory liability insurance, muzzling said dogs in public, and mandatory spauing/neutering.

Banning doesn't do shit. They banned pits in Miami Dade County but people still have pits because no one enforces it and/or they move to Broward
