OUYA - A new $99 console powered by Android [Kickstarter ended, $8.5 million funded]

Mine has arrived and is currently sitting with my neighbour according to the delivery receipt.

First thing I'm going to do is root it and try and shoehorn Titanium Backup onto it. This will give me an easy root to transfer all my backed-up Play Store games until someone works out how to get the Play Store itself onto Ouya.

If all goes well, I should be playing Afterburner Climax with the ouya touch controller this evneing!

Has a custom store. It does play standard android apps, but they currently need to be sideloaded (and I think, rooted).

Contrary to popular opinion, rooting the OUYA does not wipe the Ouya store. This has been confirmed multiple times and the misconception is based on misinterpretation of the facts.

So - if you want to get your normal Android games on, you have a few options:

a) Hope that they appear in OUYA-optimised form on the store (although this requires a second purchase)

b) If they are available stand alone (Humble Bundle games for example), sideload them

c) If they are only available on the Play Store, use Titanium Backup to package them up from an existing device and import directly into OUYA

d) Wait until XDA get the Play Store working (don't hold your breath, but I believe they'll get there eventually)
 
Got my OUYA today in the mail (Australia).

I was under the impression XBMC was there out of the box? Or at least available or download?
 
Finally got my OUYA today. Yes, the faceplates were popped off and protected by some wrap.

That said, my controller is broken. The left trigger button sticks. What the fuck. And it feels so cheap.

Got mine. Not quite sure what the hell to do with this thing yet to be honest.

Thought it would be able to read from a USB drive, doesn't even seem to be able to do that. Would like to be able to use this as a media center and emulator (for SNES games that I've already bought), but seems to require a lot of patience and hoop jumping.
 
Uh, what about the people that preordered through the Ouya.tv website? The website said they would get it before the retail release (specifically in April), but I've not heard anything about it since the release was officially pushed back to the end of June.
 
Are there any games on it yet? Is the UI running? Is there a store yet? Someone should start a new "impressions" thread if there anything to be said about it yet.

Are you frickin' kidding me? That's exactly what I wanted to use it for.
 
I got mine yesterday. It all just felt underwhelming to be honest. I'm not sure if I'd set my expectations too high, but I just didn't get excited with it.

The hardware is well made but the software needs updating.

It's also really annoying that you can't see the cost of games before you download and play the trial version.
 
I got my Ouya today.

Felt really awkward to set up - at one time it could not detect my wireless network - the wireless network that only a few minutes before I managed to connect to, to be able to download updates. The router is next door....

Two things have really disappointed me, but I hope will be fixed in time.

Firstly, the display options are lacking. The device is displaying outside of my TV display borders - It merely has an option to supposedly prevent this, however gives you tips on how to sort your display via suggested menu options. This should never have to be pointed out - such devices should be completely flexible in allowing you to adjust borders natively in the OS.

Secondly, I bought the console mainly to stream Twitch.tv. The Twitch.tv app is woefully lacking, not allowing me to specify resolution of streams and not allowing me to log into Twitch to allow me to follow my followed streams.

It's a shame that a Roku box and an unofficial Justin.tv app allows me to do what I dearly wanted the Ouya to do for half the amount of money and for a lot less hassle.

All up to you, Ouya - you have a lot of catching up to do.

Agreed. Sadly the level of expectation for me was high in that streaming from Twitch was a big selling point when the kickstarter was in motion. What Twitch have provided in terms of their app should be a complete embarrassment all around.
 
My Ouya has been sitting in a USPS warehouse about 100 miles away for the last 4 days. Why did they have to ship these things via DHL?!?!? I look forward to trying it out, but I'm worried that it won't live up to expectations based on all these negative impressions.
 
Finally received a response to my DOA controller after over a week. Over a week, no joke.

And the response that took a week? "We've forward this to our specialists." Fuck these guys.

I've had issues with mine but so far it has done everything I've wanted it to do. Tegra 4 would be nice, and yes, a Nexus 7/HTC One X/ect have the same guts, but this was cheaper than a Nexus 7 and since I wanted something that was going to be stuck to my TV more often than not a good buy. Just wish it was a little bit easier to get up and running how I wanted instead of how hard it's been.

Yup, twitch on this thing sucks ass, but it might be better one day.

A Roku box + the unofficial Justin.tv app will be a lot cheaper and more functional for Twitch streaming.
 
Ouya, The Double Fine Adventure and the Turrican Soundtrack force me to never back another Kickstarter Project with there delays. Just received this Mail from Ouya.

It’s not in your living room yet -- and we know that SUCKS. There are approximately 7,500 early supporters like yourself that are still waiting for their OUYA.


You want answers and we want to give them to you. So here it goes:


Two weeks ago, we provided an update through Kickstarter that 100% of early backer orders had shipped from Hong Kong. This was/is a true statement. All units were manufactured, packaged, and on route to one of our distribution facilities (based on your mailing address). At these facilities, your OUYA is labeled, scanned, and shipped to your doorstep (hence the 1-2 week delay in receiving your shipping email and activating your tracking code).


In your case, things didn’t go as planned. It’s important to note at this point that the cause(s) behind your delayed OUYA isn’t the result of a single point of failure -- rather, it is the result of several small(ish) logistical hurdles (new) that we encountered late in the game.


What we do know is that 5,000 units will ship this weekend -- so many of you can expect your first email very soon. Do not be surprised, however, if it does not have a tracking number. In that case, you should receive a secondary email (which includes your tracking number) shortly afterwards.


I don’t expect this to make you feel *much* better (well maybe a little ;). I can tell you that everyone is pushing and working hard and YOU are important to us. If for whatever crazy reason you do not receive your MY OUYA HAS SHIPPED email by Wednesday (6/12), we will email you. We will keep you in the loop. PROMISE.

There 100% shipped mail 2 weeks ago was nothing else than a lie in my eyes. My Ouya will probably arrive here in Germany after the delayed retail date in the US.
 
Yeah, if you can't handle a little over 2 month's delay you should stay far away from Kickstarter, that's pretty good for a Kickstarter, and many projects never ship ever. Kickstarter is all a big risk, where you aren't buying a product, but supporting a small enterprise helping them to make their dreams become reality, and those companies tend to be bad estimating how long it will take to get things done.

Their 100% email wasn't a lie, the problem was their entire history of chart updates wasn't based on shipping to the end user but shipping from the factory, and they never made that clear, aside from occasionally saying they were "on the move" rather than "shipping". So, the factory in China builds and stores OUYA systems for a week, then ships them to the shipping company in Hong Kong, who sends the shipping email with tracking number when they then ship it out to regional airports, which then hands them off to a local shipping company. What Julie is saying in that email was that all systems left the factory as was announced, but apparently bad things happened in the steps after that.

So 10% of the total shipping number had problems on the way to the backers. Sorry but i can't believe that. They just talked bullshit 2 weeks ago with there 100% shipping numbers. But you are right i learned my lesson from these 3 Kickstarter campaigns. No Kickstarter projects for me in the future.
 
I backed an Arduino based project (Digispark) and they got funded but had a 3 month delay but it's entirely understandable even with larger projects. It has the word start in the name for a reason so I don't mind for people to figure things out just as long as the product comes at some point. I never expect anything outside of the risk I already knew involved with backing something that has yet to be completed.
 
Got mine last week.

My controller was okay, though the touchpad part is a bit non-intuitive given how you hold a controller.

Had the same wireless network problem mentioned.

Could use some better in box documentation, figuring out how to put the batteries in the controller required looking it up online since the face plates were on.

The selection of games is pretty dismal too. There's literally nothing I want that I don't have on something else and its a pain to use it to play Play Store games on the big screen. They really should have found a way to get the Play Store on their to give their launch some meat.

Doesn't give me a lot of hope for the Gamestick either, sadly.
 
Does anyone know if I can used a wired 360 controller on this? Sick and tired of the Bluetooth disconnects I've been getting with the default controller midgame so I'd just like to take the whole wireless part out of the equation. Also nice to finally have airdroid up and running.

edit: Dug it out of the hole it had found and it isn't terrible. Works out of the box in the main Ouya menu but I had to remap it in the first program I tried to use it for. Still, it should work for 95% of everything I can think I'd be throwing at it.
