Overall, is the Xbox software library just...

Nothing wrong with Psychonauts, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Rayman 3, Voodo Vince, and Oddworld as platformers but I would like more with more concentrated platformy goodness on XBox.

You drive a stake through my heart with that comment, Yoshi. Rayman 3 is a solid, above-average action-platformer that just didn't conform (concede, whichever) to inanimate slabs of ground moving along fixed paths. Rayman 2 had a smooth flow in direction and platforming, but there wasn't enough to it to humble R3.

Dunno, I haven't even read the rest of the thread yet, but I'll just say I thought Xbox was easily the worst console this gen. Multiplatform games, whatever. Exclusives make a console, then I look at the multiplatform stuff. And PS2 and GC completely cleaned the floor with good exclusives, compared to Xbox.

My PS2 and GC got pretty much equal playing time over the past 4-5 years, whereas Xbox has gotten very little except for a couple big games.

The bottom line is that MS has gone from a no name console player to one taken very seriously for next gen. They've incubated and developed quite a large fan and userbase. Say what you want about the games, the exclusives, the live service, the fact is that the Xbox has been the vehicle by which MS has built it's foundation.

For those of you with your one or two of "worthwhile" exclusives, MS has gotten into your living room. They've succeeded. For those of you whose library is only 2% Xbox games or those without a 1st party exclusive, it doesn't matter. MS is in your living room and they've succeeded. For those of you who have tried XBL with a free trial but haven't subscribed as of yet, it doesn't matter, you know of the service, you know the buzz, they've succeeded.

The Xbox was never about outpacing SONY and Nintendo. It's always been about MS building that foothold in your front door. The Xbox was about building a brand, about setting the stage for the next generation and generations going forward. The fact that they've already taken Nintendo is the icing on the cake that hasn't been completely baked. As it stands now, the oven is getting hotter and the cake is rising, perhaps not just in the west this time, but in the east.

I wrote in Nov 2001 that I wanted to go along for the ride. The Xbox has had it's ups and downs, it's many failures and it's many successes. It's been quite a roller coaster. The ride is slowing and I'll be getting off soon only to reseat myself for a faster more sleeker, more encompassing experience starting this fall. I can't fucking wait!

... and I agree. Not a damn person on this forum in 2001 could have predicted MS would have had this kind of impact. If the PS3 is the monster its made out to be next generation, you can thank Microsoft for that. The PS2 was a pretty generic console in a hardware sense and MS blew them away from that standpoint.

..and mostly because we are gaming nutters who can justify buying another console for only 1 or 2 games, and its more powerful.

Now next gen, take away the power argument, and you're back to arguing purely on exclusives. You don't automatically choose X360 for multiplatform. The number of people who buy a console for LIVE is questionable (this forum would be disproportionate)

What impact? That it would be less successful than the N64? That it would end up having less than 1/4 of the PS2's total installed base? Is it the comparative lack of million sellers? Was it the impact of severely cutting into the cake that is the PS2 userbase (oops, that didn't happen).

As far as the Xbox hardware blowing away the PS2 hardware... duh, it came out like 18 months afterwards. The PS2 is certainly not a generic console though, or at least it's holding its own pretty well when it comes to graphics.

Please don't take this as trolling, but I really don't think MS's arrival had any significant impact.

It's the only console competing with the PS2. Nintendo and Gamecube are just content living in their sheltered and shrinking world.

Thank Microsoft for making Sony work harder and deliver better games and better deals on your PS2.

Unfortunately, most tech people buying stuff do not take that into account. If a console has pretty graphics, the right price and the right games, they're going to buy it. The fact that it came out later than the other console is not going to stop them.

Of course, you're entitled to your opinion.

I'd say Microsoft became the next big player, a true rival to Sony, and they're not going away. Something Sega couldn't do and Nintendo has given up on doing a long time ago. That's fairly significant in my book.

Honestly, I hope they are destroyed in the East this next generation. I don't want more than two consoles to have to keep up with, and Microsoft ain't one of them.

Oh yeah, competition is so bad.

Way to miss the point completely, cowboy. Competition is obviously good, I just don't want Microsoft to be one of the relevant competitors. I don't like where they're going.

You're complaining over something irrelevant. Do you want a video game monopoly? If not than anything else is the lesser of two evils, no matter who's in it.

There aren't too many tech-savvy multi-nationals willing to take a risk in the console biz. NEC gave up, Matsushita/Panasonic ran away. I don't see Samsung or Motorolla rushing to get in.

Bad luck, they're already relevant, if you don't like their stuff just don't buy it, if in the future they don't deserve to stay in this market for any decisions they make, the gamers will choose.

And its people like you who fuel my support for Xbox and its games. I'll keep throwing my money at MS, and i hope they become a significant gaming entity next gen with 360

Its pretty good, made better by the KOTOR games, even if they are also on PC. Its still not close to PS2 for me, but a solid 2nd. Still kicks the shit out of the GC lineup.

What a dumb, dumb statement. Are you even a gamer? A true gamer would NEVER utter such bullshit.

I don't particularly care for Nintendo, but they're good for the industry and i would never wish for them to be "destroyed".

You're a gaming Uncle Tom.....

Well you're absolutly right. The PS2 hasn't even sold NEARLY as much as the Xbox has worldwide. And don't give me any numbers, Sony just paid to get those numbers out... they have no soul, they are poor sports and soar losers, much like their fan base.

But through it all, what we have here is an age old battle on what system is better, it's like this every generation of consoles. Let's just put something to rest here and now... the PS2 has been destroyed TWICE in it's life time. The Sega Dreamcast DESTROYED the PS2 and the Microsoft XBOX took a piss on it, basically. That's just the way I see it.

By the way, I am not asian so that is why I like Xbox more, more games I can relate to, not some weird ass Japanese games that don't make much sense and are only played by pencil necked dweebed white kids and fucking people like that.

But it's all good, I am a big fan of Tekken so of course I still have my PS2, but other than Tekken it doens't have anything else that interests me, and I have never ever tooken my PS2 online. Guess what? The only people who play PS2 online are the game testers themselves, my friends work at EA and they told me that as a fact, jack!

What can you do? Sony makes good tv's and other equipment like that, but when it comes to making consoles, it needs to make a true gaming machine first in order to really be a true contender...

Oh wow. POTY. :lol

Dunno about the Xbox's library, I've only played 2 games on the thing, and neither grasped me.

How hard is "PS2 has 13,000 titles" to understand?

I still can't comprehend how others can't comprehend that the PS2 simply has a drastically larger library than Xbox. It is simple math.. 13,000 > Xbox.

Many multiplatform titles do have marginally better graphics on Xbox, but I don't consider marginally better graphics all that important when I'm playing on a calibrated Sony Wega CRT and using a Dual Shock 2 for a controler.

Sure, you can point out your crap mutliplatform titles, that look better on PC than any console, but those aren't the games that warrant buying a PS2.

I'd take ANY Ratchet and Clank game over ANY platformer on ANY other console ANY day of the week. The people that wouldn't are in the minority, and that is their choice. Nothing wrong with that but I'm trying to use logic here.

Proven exclusive franchises are what make great consoles.
Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Tekken, backward compatibility, a free DVD player, and easy importing, are the reasons I bought a PS2.

Let me go back to math again one last time...
PS2 has 13,000 titles > Xbox certianly doesn't have anywhere near that amount.
Maybe I should make a pie chart or a map.

Oh, but then the fanboys would just go back claiming about how Xbox has DD5.1 and PS2 doesn't. *BUZZ* WRONG!

PS2 has Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS. Most people don't seem to understand how Pro Logic II works. They think it's just a stereo signal that gets turned into 5.1 surround sound by the reciever. (Um no, that would be called stereo). Pro Logic II is 4.1/5.1/7.1 surround sound that has been shrunk down to fit into a stereo carrier, it is then un-shrunk by the reciever to what it was to begin with, true 5.1 audio. It has anomolies and isn't as good as DD5.1 but it still sounds excellent enough that most people could care less if it is DD, DTS, PLII, whatever.

And who cares anyway? "OMG It Has De DD5.1 it sounds 100X better than PLII."
No it doesn't, especially if your Xbox is connected to a elcheapo 5.1 reciever and my PLII is connected to a high quality reciever. And you do know most DD5.1 Xbox games are only 4.1 right? Plus DTS can carry more data than 5.1 giving you better sound.

Why can't some people get it?

To Microsoft, there's no such thing as a financial risk. :lol
