Overrated athletes

Dwight Howard.

He was playing his best when he was fine being the third and sometimes fourth option on offense (behind Jameer, Rashard, and sometimes Turkoglu). He focused more on defense, rebounding, and Stan Van's in-out offensive philosophy.

Now he's a team cancer who still can't make FTs, still has shit post moves, and kills offensive rhythm.

Just wait til he enters the hot dog eating championship.

As a big hockey fan, Sidney Crosby. He's a great player, but nowhere near the praise and media attention he receives.

Bo Jackson

For someone talked about so much, some of most unremarkable stats ever. His NFL career season avg's rival Bilal Powell's. He'd be an undrafted permanent fantasy waiver wire player if he existed now... Capable of making a big play once in a while, but not worth drafting. Like Leon Washington.

lol no

Anyone who says Lebron or Durant are overrated is insane. I'd like to see who's currently in the league that you think are better than them.

As for my picks, I've got a few: Chris Bosh, Colin Kaepernick, Deron Williams

Not on Dwight.

Biggest difference between Dwight now and his Orlando days is the quality of his head coach. McHale is a fucking joke, the fact Morey kept him is going to get him fired after next season.

Most overrated athlete right now has to be anybody you consider an elite running back. So probably Adrian Peterson. The only backs with that elite kind of value are the ones who are integral to the passing game (like McCoy and Charles). As great as Adrian Peterson its not really helping his team win football games very much because every time (outside of specific situations - short yardage/end of game specifically) they hand him the ball is less valuable than a pass attempt from any average QB. Hopefully they let Bridgewater or Cassel throw the ball this year instead of handing it to Peterson as many times as the have been doing.

So is that why England scored a grand total of 2 goals in 2 games?
Last I checked, there were other people who were supposed to be doing something out there.

Well, his use in these matches is on Roy.
And Roy's pretty lousy.
Our team is shit, but Gerrard needs to go. He is done.

As a Panthers fan, have to say Luke Kuechly. It's not that he isn't good, but he wasn't even the best defender on our team (probably wasn't even the best linebacker) last year, let alone the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. Racks up a lot of tackles due to a dominant front seven, fairly average playmaker.

Problem was they had a below average quarterback

I hope you are joking. You are talking about one of the only true two sport athletes in the modern era.

As for his career season average in the NFL, he didn't get the touches to compete yardage wise, but his production is unquestionable. His career rushing average per touch is 5.4.

The all time running back career record is 5.2 held by Jim Brown. Adrian Peterson's is 5.0.

I'm not joking. He's over-rated, but not necessarily bad. People were listing him in the "Most dominating athlete" thread from this past week, which is insane. He never dominated any sport he played in, even though he played professionally in two sports.

Carries and production are an important part of being a running back. Being able to be used on 2 or 3 downs adds value to a running back. If a player cannot sustain carries, either because he's playing two sports, out of condition, injury prone, or whatever it is, then they deserve less praise. Bo Jackson, though, still receives so much praise. Hell, ESPN picked him as like #1 in some Top Athletes list from the mid-2000s.

A guy who averages 600 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns, and 100 yards receiving a season cannot be in any "most -anything-" category other than "most over-rated." I don't know his baseball statistics as well, but he only batted over .260 like twice in his career, and he had one good season with Kansas City in 1989. Otherwise, he had pretty much below average batting statistics, often batting below .250 and aside from the one year, never had a ton of RBIs. Good defensive player, of course.

Bo Jackson wasn't bad, but he's made a legacy off of a small handful of highlight reel runs, a number of amazing catches, and all out hustle when he played. But for the praise the he gets, he's the definition of over-rated.

Well yes thats true but his cap number being an astronomical 14+ million every year is also greatly hurting the overall quality of their team. If he was on the open market he wouldn't get half of that, probably not even a third. It's amazing the Vikings have never considered cutting him to this point.

how is he overrated?

Tom Brady

He's a great athlete but Bill Belichick is the real mastermind behind the Patriots.

a great athlete and great Football palyer yet still overrated?

D Wade now days. He has the knees of a 70 year old man at this point.

but he didn't at one point. him having old knees is just him following teh natural progression of wear and tear.

Cal Ripken Jr.

*runs and hides*

you get back here!

Bo Jackson
His career was short as hell but I remember considering him the clear-cut #2 superstar running back behind only Barry Sanders at one point. He was nasty.

even as a college QB, he was incredibly overrated.

I'm not even a true fan of his but he was a big fucking deal. He scored a fuckton of TDs and is at least a top 10 QB from the era. Jared Lorenzen meets Tommie Frazier. He was really good imo.

It's not Adrian's fault the Vikings FO haven't drafted a decent QB or sign one who isn't complete shit. Only one who got them anywhere was Favre who was wanting to go there to stick it to the Packers. If you previously suggested that QB's are more vital to an offense than HB's, okay fine, but that's not why they haven't been unsuccessful.

For all the grief you're giving Peterson, he has more playoff victories with his team than McCoy and Charles do with their respective teams.

It's true, Lebron is overrated. He is athletic for sure but he has no heart and is clearly given the star treatment by the referees... Crab dribble, trucking players in the lane, pushing off, etc. If the referees called it fairly his stats would drop of big time. His skill set has gotten better over the years but he relies on his athleticism far to much.

What happened when George complained about no fouls being called on Lebron during the eastern conference finals? The very next game Lebron went out and was called for fouls he usually gets away with and he had a terrible game because of it.

Hahahahahahahahahaha

No.

He's called dominant because of his ability to play two professional sports, and be great at both.

It's not his fault they didn't give him the ball. His college career showed he could handle a 250+ carry season, they simply didn't give him the ball.

His baseball career is definitely the weaker part of his resume, but he was never a better baseball player than football player, even in college. What is remarkable is that in his last year before his injury, you could argue that he *had* become a better baseball player than football. His batting average had gone up every year (a 65 point delta over 5 years). Similarly, his OBP went up 47 points and his slugging percentage rose 79 points.

Bo Jackson wasn't bad, but he's made a legacy off of a small handful of highlight reel runs, a number of amazing catches, and all out hustle when he played. But for the praise the he gets, he's the definition of over-rated.

We may just have to agree to disagree on this.

This is possibly the worst answer I could imagine for this topic! He played 2 professional sports, and excelled at both! That's not something anyone really does...

Though as a Chiefs fan, the fact that he played for the Royals and the Raiders really pissed me off....lol

I remember watching him throw a guy out at home plate from way back in left field. The ball was on a wire, wasn't arced at all. It looked like a laser, the craziest thing I ever saw back when I watched baseball.

Luke Kuechly - Levonte David is a better Luke Kuechly than Kuechly is.

Deion Sanders - Notoriously bad tackler and a bad-to-mediocre baseball player.

David Beckham - Lol.

Rocky Marciano - Retired undefeated by fighting a ton of old guys at the end of their careers.

Holy shit are you wrong.

Bo Jackson in undoubtedly one of the greatest all time athletes, based on pure ability. Dude was a legit freak of nature. The only thing holding him back from truly being recognized was that he injured himself young. But when Bo played football and baseball, Bo was incredible.
