It was a comic that was posted on this thread a while back, with widowmaker putting on the goggles to look at all the overwatch characters.
Ah thanks mollipen. So this is just original content? Because I recall seeing it somewhere else. Without overwatch characters.

But the King is dead. Long live the Queen.

HAOverwatch currently has 23 heroes, meaning that Mercy only makes up 1/23, or 4%, of the cast. However, based on your numbers, she was prominently featured in a whopping 19% of the last 75 pieces posted.
Seems pretty excessive to me.
is there a general consensus on who the most popular Overwatch character is?
Totally unscientific, but since we're focused on art here, here's what I got for searching Deviantart:
- Tracer - 11,686
- Mercy - 7,951
- D.Va - 5,949
- Widowmaker - 5,630
- Mei - 5,036
- Reaper - 4,875
- Genji - 4,397
- Junkrat - 3,966
- Hanzo - 3,659
- McCree - 3,182
- Sombra - 2,276
- Pharah - 2,105
- Solder: 76 - 2,021
- Roadhog - 1,864
- Zarya - 1,718
- Lucio - 1,573
- Symmetra - 1,525
- Ana - 1,293
- Reinhardt - 1,287
- Bastion - 1,019
- Winston - 974
- Torbjorn - 424
And I love Mercy even more for hanging out in the NeoGeo section. <3
I'd say because she's a symbol of speed and maneuverability, so you mix her body suit which is designed for faster aerodynamics with the bomber jacket that can represent flight.
I guess I've just never understood why anyone had a problem with her. *shrugs*
I don't see how her outfit deserves being called out anymore than Widow, D.Va, Mercy or Symmetra. They're all fairly scantily clad, and yet none of them are particularly sexualized within the context of the game. In the fan art people make? Sure. But not so much in the actual game. You know, as much as I like tracer, I don't really get why her design is hypersexualized in the context of the rest of the game.
Like, Widowmaker, being a throwback to the femmefatal trope makes sense in terms of her being hypersexualized. Sort of, I mean. You can argue that the trope itself shouldn't have to be sexualized and blah blah blah, I get it, all I'm saying is that it has a history of sexualization, so Widow's outfit being skintight with a giant cleavage window is atleast fitting as a tribute to what story tropes her character is suppose to embody. Her character as well, with her history, feels like she'd use her sexiness to take someone off guard. Same thing with D.Va, she is kind of a throwback to mech-anime shows which often had skintight suits, so she's got a skintight suit which will naturally emphasize her curves. Plus, as a fun loving teenager, I get the sense that she'd like to show off her body. Again, she didn't have to be designed with such a body that she has, but the sexualized aspects of her design atleast make sense in a historical sense and from a character standpoint. So if we are going to have some sexualization going on, I can atleast 'get it' with these characters from the tropes their throwing back to.
But with Tracer, I don't really know why she, as a character, would choose to have a super tight body suit that hugs her butt so tight it outlines her crack with extreme detail. You could argue that the need of the suit is timetravel related ala D.Va's mech suit, but then why does she have that jacket. Idk, it just feels less necessary for her to have her ass outlined this much than other characters. Sort of the same deal with symmetra now that I think about it. I don't see why she'd go out to battle in a dress like that or if she is a throwback to some kind of genre or trope, I don't know which.
Honestly, Overwatch is a game that is head and shoulders above many games about nonsexualized female representation in many ways, so lets not get too negative about it, but I'd definitely ask the creator why they designed Tracer like this.

I just don't see why your justification for Widow and D.Va is any better than the justification for Tracer's speedy-aerodynamic inspired body suit.
There's nothing confrontational about what I wrote. I merely disputed your claim. Can you please reread the post with greater accuracy? I did call out symmetra in the same way. And I agreed with Mollipen's speedy aerosuit explanation. With Mercy, I feel she is less scantily clad, but sure, her body suit can be said to emphasize her curves too.
Whether being tributes to past titillation filled genre's tropes is justification enough can be debated about by itself (something I also mentioned), but I feel there is more to that justification than "hey, why don't we just have them sexualized" for no reason. So I asked what Tracer's deal was and how she fit in there.
I already said that Overwatch is head and shoulders imo about this stuff just for the fact that it has non-sexualized outfits for all it's female characters along with a variety of body types. There's no need to be confrontational about it.

Cripes, don't be such a baby about having your idea disputed.
