Overwatch is Blizzard’s first new IP in 19 years and is a multiplayer FPS that pits two teams of 6 against each other in short, objective-based modes. The game is available on next-gen consoles and PC and currently has 4 multiplayer modes: 3 asymmetrical (one team attacks, one team defends) and 1 symmetrical (king of the hill). There are 22 heroes, each with unique abilities to choose from and fitting a specific role: Offense, Defense, Support, and Tank. Heroes have 2-3 abilities and an ultimate, which is charged up by doing damage to enemy heroes (it also charges up slowly over time). All abilities function on a cooldown and do not cost any resources to use, so you are free to use your abilities whenever they are off cooldown. There is also no ammo to pick up or run out of. You do have to reload when your clip runs out, but you have an unlimited supply of ammo. This helps focus the players on playing the objective rather than rationing their ammo during intense firefights.

What makes Overwatch unique is its hero selection and the ability to switch heroes in the middle of a game. This allows teams to change tactics on the fly as a match is progressing, and often a change in team composition can be the impetus for breaking through a defending team’s chokepoint or halting an attacking team’s push!

02_a_loreheader9eju2.png

Overwatch takes place in a fictionalized version of Earth, in which humanity lives alongside a race of robots called the Omnics. However, this peace was not to last. 30 years before the start of the game, the Omnics, many of whom were military peacekeeping robots, went rogue and turned against humanity. This marked the beginning of the Omnic Crisis.

In response, the United Nations scoured the world for the best that humanity could offer and formed an elite strike team called Overwatch. With its strength and expertise, Overwatch managed to beat back the Omnics and end the Omnic Crisis. This ushered in a new era in which Overwatch expanded into a global peacekeeping force, operating all over the world. Over the next 30 years, Overwatch grew to become a vast coalition of the world’s best soldiers and scientists and was revered all over the planet.

Under the surface, however, cracks were beginning to form. Accusations of human rights abuses began to surface, strife between members of the group led to an internal civil war, and a UN investigation along with an explosion at the Swiss headquarters led to Overwatch being officially disbanded. The world had lost the organization that saved it so many years ago, and all its members went their separate ways...

Until now. The world is once again in peril. Dark forces threaten world peace. The world needs its heroes. Are you ready?

Overwatch launched with 12 maps split across 4 competitive modes. All future maps will be free to everyone who owns the game.

03_assault-temple-of-poym4.jpg
03_assault-hanamuraxhz60.jpg
03_assault-volskaya-ildl6q.jpg

Attackers have to capture point A, which the defenders must defend. If point A is captured, the defenders fall back to point B and the attackers get a time extension. If point B is captured, the attackers win. If time runs out, the defenders win.

03_a_escort5lr9x.png

03_escort-watchpoint-w2aiz.jpg
03_escort-doradof7lu3.jpg
03_escort-route665kxhx.jpg

Attackers must escort a payload from the beginning of the map to the end. The payload only moves when attackers are nearby; it stops moving as soon as a defender stands near it. Each map has a number of checkpoints that give the attackers a time extension. If the clock reaches zero, the defenders win.

03_a_assault_escort8rov4.png

03_assaultescort-kingkojl2.jpg
03_assaultescort-numbtkkbd.jpg
03_assaultescort-holl6xjwd.jpg
eichenwaldetzkki.jpg

A combination of the Assault and Escort modes. The attacking team must capture a point that is protected by the defending team. If the point is captured, a payload is spawned and must be escorted to the end of the map. Time is extended upon point capture and upon the payload reaching checkpoints within the map.

03_a_controlmhpxr.png

03_control-lijiang-tojvyjs.jpg
03_control-iliosual29.jpg
03_control-nepal8pkyo.jpg

The only symmetrical mode in Overwatch. Two teams fight to control a central location on the map. Once it is captured, it slowly ticks up from 0 to 100 for the team that holds it. Whichever team reaches 100 first wins the round. Each map has 3 different rounds set in different areas of the map, and the mode is best of 3

04_a_heroesheadernts2b.png

Heroes are separated into 4 categories, but you will likely see all kinds of heroes in all kinds of matches. In other words, don’t be surprised to see defense heroes on offense, and offense heroes on defense. Overwatch is designed first and foremost around its heroes, and the interplay between them is what creates the most hectic and fun situations in the game! Certain heroes will also speak to each other in-game, revealing their personal histories and the lore of the Overwatch universe as you play! All future heroes will be free to everyone who owns the game.

04_a_offensedfrnm.png

04_offense-soldier764nyz6.jpg
04_offense-sombra1gsiq.jpg
04_offense-tracer89zlx.jpg

These are heroes that specialize in doing damage and taking out the enemy team. You will want them on offense to break through chokepoints and capture the objective, but you may also want a few on defense in order to hold back the attacking team.

04_a_defense9aodp.png

04_defense-bastionera5z.jpg
04_defense-hanzoe6a4h.jpg
04_defense-junkratgnxwa.jpg
04_defense-mei2px9c.jpg
04_defense-torbjorn0pxzf.jpg
04_defense-widowmakermnbk8.jpg

These are the heroes that specialize in zone denial, long range damage, or fortifying an area. Basically, their job is to make it difficult for the attacking team to advance. However, don’t be surprised to see them on attack, as their crowd control abilities can be useful in many situations.

04_a_tank64pu7.png

04_tank_reinhardtunaaz.jpg
04_tank_roadhog80as3.jpg
04_tank_winston2qzo4.jpg
04_tank_zaryaydzvl.jpg

These are the damage sponges, the initiators, and the front line fighters. They take damage so their team doesn’t have to, and they allow their teammates to flank and do their jobs more effectively. Every team needs a good tank if it hopes to successfully withstand a match.

04_support_luciopeldo.jpg
04_support_mercyyylnw.jpg
04_support_symmetrapzbiy.jpg
04_support_zenyattasyx70.jpg

Don’t call them healers! Yes, support characters provide healing, but in Overwatch they are so much more than just that! In addition to putting out decent damage, supports can provide AOE speed boosts to help teams reach objectives quicker, fly around the level providing damage buffs to their damage dealers, and set up mini-turrets that damage and slow enemies. Don’t be afraid to give them a shot; these are some of the most fun heroes in the game!

As you play games you earn XP, which is applied to your profile after every game. You earn 4 XP for every second you are active in a game, as well as an XP bonus for the highest medal earned in a match. A gold medal is worth 150 XP, a silver medal is worth 100 XP, and a bronze medal is worth 50 XP. If you receive multiple medals, you will only get an XP bonus for the highest medal earned. For example, if you earned 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal, you will only receive an XP bonus of 150 XP. You also receive a 500 XP bonus if you win a match, a 250 XP bonus if you lose a match, a 200 XP bonus if you complete consecutive games in the same lobby, a 1,500 XP bonus for your first win of the day, and a 20% multiplier to all XP gained in a match if you’re grouped up with friends. You do not gain any XP if you quit a match before it ends.

Every time your profile levels up, you unlock a loot box which contains 4 random cosmetic items. These can include skins, voice lines, sprays, victory poses, profile images, and Play of the Game intros. In typical Blizzard fashion there are rarity tiers for each cosmetic item, which range from common (white) to legendary (orange). You can also sometimes get credits in a loot box, either as its own drop or as the result of a duplicate item. Credits can be used to purchase any cosmetic item for any character, and prices for items vary based on rarity. At the high end, you will need 1,000 credits to purchase a legendary skin.

At low levels, leveling up is quick. The amount of XP required to level up increases up until you hit level 23, at which point it remains constant until you hit level 100. You will receive a new portrait frame every 10 levels. At level 100 you are “promoted,” which gives you a new portrait frame theme, resets your level, and resets the XP required to level up. Your cosmetic items are never reset. Overwatch also has achievements, which can be earned for performing various tasks in-game. Certain achievements will unlock general and hero-specific sprays that can be equipped.

09_a_compheader9usde.png

When you have reached at least level 25, you can join Competitive Play. After playing 10 placement matches, you are given an initial Skill Rating. You then spend the rest of the season trying to climb as high in the rankings as possible. Rewards are given at the end of each season for participating and based on your peak Skill Rating.

Welcome to Season 2 of Competitive Play (Blizzard blog post)

Key Differences from Quick Play:
  • One Hero Limit
  • Teams take turns attacking/defending on asymmetrical maps
  • Control (KOTH) is BO5

Hero Resources: Playlist of Video Guides | The Oversheet (stats spreadsheet) | r/OverwatchUniversity
Competitive Resources: GosuGamers | Over.GG | r/CompetitiveOverwatch

Q: I'm new to the game and there are so many heroes! Where do I start?
A: This playlist features useful video guides to all the heroes.

Q: Any tips for new players?
A: Turn on the Kill Feed in Gameplay Options and hit Tab a lot to see who's alive and your team's Ultimate statuses. Every bit of information helps!

Q: Do I need a mic to play this?
A: Not necessarily, but any kind of communication can have a big impact. Try to join Team Chat whenever you enter a new game so you can at least hear calls. Also, there are a few useful text chat lines that you can bind. For example, by default pressing Z will let your team know your Ultimate percentage.

Q: What can I keep in mind to be successful in fights?
A: There are 3 key types of advantage in Overwatch that you should leverage to give yourself a better chance.

1 - Positional advantage: use the features of the map to your benefit. Hold areas where the enemy is forced to walk through a tight space (aka a choke) so you can easily focus damage into it. Take high ground, which provides an angle for easy headshots, gives you more vision to scope out your surroundings, and reduces the amount of your hitbox that is exposed to the enemy.

2 - Number advantage: more players mean more damage, heals, and utility, so the team with more people in an engagement has the upper hand. Try not to go anywhere alone and do not overextend, or you're giving the enemy a free chance to pick you and gain the number advantage themselves. Also, when you die do not trickle in one-by-one; wait for your team so you can group up and push together.

3 - Ultimate advantage: the team with more ults should win the fight, provided they are used wisely. Certain ults can be combined to devastating effect or can save your team if timed properly.

My ideas for buffing Roadhog:

-6 shots instead of 4
-hook should be on a 3 second cooldown.
-self heal should be up at all times, no cooldown, and it heals 600 HP
-ult charges 30% faster
-has 800 health, 200 of that being armor, 100 of that being shields
-damage increased by 33% and range increased by 2 meters on both firing modes

So anyway why do people say Hanzo is bad? He seems really good to me.

Hanzo and Genji have effectively been fixed, I think, and are at a really balanced place right now. Hanzo can be good in the right hands, and has a few abilities which make him more forgiving on bad aim than Widow (scattershot, the size of his arrows), so the skill ceiling isn't quite as high.

Generally when I see a Hanzo pick I trust, when I see a Widow pick I die a little inside. Unless you're Surefour or mendokusaii or something like that, you're probably better off playing someone who's not Widow.

Lame I typed out this love letter to Zen and it ended up after the new OT link post:

I love Zenyatta. People say he's a shit primary healer but I disagree. Playing Mercy is sometimes as much fun as watching my car fill with gas. She only gets to do one thing at a time. Provide 60 hps sec OR add 30% damage to one person OR shoot her little pistol OR hide and hope the enemy team doesn't know where you are so you can surprise Rez.

Zenyatta provides half the healing of Mercy regularly and can provide it at a greater distance with a longer out of LOS effect and doesn't have to put himself in as much danger to provide it (although he lacks her escape tool to compensate). BUT then he at the same time also gets to debuff someone by 30% which if one teammate is shooting that target with at least 100dps worth of damage, you have now effectively provided 60 hit points of swing damage just like single target Mercy heal. If the teammate deals more than 100 dps, you've now provided more than Mercy. AND then you get to deal up to 300 dps (with head shots) worth of damage yourself. Not even accounting for his ult which I enjoy better than Mercy because for one it makes him invincible and second it prevents the deaths instead of hiding to let it happen.

I'm tired of hearing people say Zenyatta isn't a good healer. He does just fine. His greatest strength is how much he gets to do at the same time while Mercy has to pick and choose which thing to do. He can heal from further away than Lucio or Mercy and his heals are more reliable than Ana. He can deal dps-level damage and provide a powerful tool to help his team melt targets. And he gets to do this all at once.

Oh and another thing. He can be better at healing stealth mode as well. Mercy has to be in the mix with an obvious beam tether. Lucio has to be relatively close. Zen can throw discord and harmony from really far away and hide for 3 seconds (building up a volley of balls to shoot if he wants).

Not sure why I wanted to write a Zen love letter today. I just wish people would quit thinking Lucio and Mercy are the only primary healers. A good Zen heals just fine unless your team is simply outmatched. And he's a ton of fun to play now. Blizzard better not touch him. I think he's perfect post changes.

This is a nice introspective, but I still get worried if we only nave a Zen as a healer in any competitive match. His 30hp/sec solo target healing just isn't ideal without a second healer like Lucio to complement it.

He's awesome though, and I love seeing one on my team as an off healer. Discord is amazing.

Anyways, I just realized I probably shouldn't play while tournament games are going on on the weekends. Most of the half-decent and above players are probably watching the matches (like I usually am). So I guess I'll go watch ESL EU.

Because Hanzo is very feast or famine and people are risk adverse in general. If you're not hitting your shots, you're pretty much useless on a Hanzo, especially when you're taking up a dps slot.

On the end of the last thread people were talking about how Blizzard supposedly sees Symmetra as a "Security guard/Eyes of the team" character, then wouldn't an ideal buff be making it so when an enemy is being attacked by her turrets (And possibly her primary fire) they become visible to the team ala Widow Ult/Hanzo ability. I'd also think making her teleporter visible to the entire team when it's up would be a good way to let people know where to defend so it doesn't get destroyed.

So anyway why do people say Hanzo is bad? He seems really good to me.
It's because playing Hanzo is fairly hard and he seems to appeal to bad players more, for some reason. Except those bad players seemed to have learned there lesson and now it's mostly the good Hanzos. Except a lot of people think all he's good for is spamming and getting "lucky" kills with scatter.

The hate for Hanzo is really dumb, and he really is a fantastic DPS. If you have good aim, you will destroy with Hanzo.

Haven't played since that one win after hitting platinum. Been busy all week, hoping to hop on this afternoon after working on my car.

Any patches out this week I need to be aware of?

Watching the first half of the weeklies:

Ana - Up
Roadhog - Up
Reaper - Up
Bastion - Up (slightly)
Genji - Down
McCree - Down
Mercy - Down
Zen - Down (slightly)

3/3 is fast on the rise. Besides on KotH, it or a slight variation is becoming the standard.

Thoughts on Ana: She is very good, you should start learning her if you haven't. Her ult charge rate is insane and her bio-nade is a hard counter to Zen's ultimate (which is why he is on the way down). Zen can no longer Transcend into a Graviton Surge without it being counter by Ana's heal denial. It's very strong and Ana herself is probably too strong. I expect her to be the main focus of the nerfs next PTR.

Roadhog is up because his high health pool nets Ana lots of ult charge. He is a good target for Nano Boost, and in the 3/3 comp he is the main source of DPS. Lots of teams have been focusing Roadhog down on this comp to eliminate the DPS threat as a means to counter 3/3.

Reaper and Bastion are up because of the sheer amount of tanks in play right now. Reaper being the dedicated tank buster for some time, and Bastion while still not seeing much use can do some tank busting too.

Mercy is once again falling out of the meta, although there is way more room to use her than with the dive comps of last patch. Pharah/Mercy comps are seeing success, NWA the team that beat Luminosity 3-0 for the EU weeklies pulled out the Pharah/Mercy on Dorado attack, and the Widow for defense. This was even against 3/3 comps if I'm not mistaken. 3/3 may be hard to deal with, but better teams are still pulling wins out of it regardless of team comp.

Zen will still be used, he's being swapped out of 3/3 comps in favor of DPS like McCree, Reaper or Hanzo. With Ana's nade completely rendering his ult useless, he becomes a much less valuable support.

So, apparently, for Widow, if you activate Infra-sight half-way through doing a grapple, it resets your grapple:

Anyone taking bets on how long until Blizzard fixes it?

Played a game with Prelude a few moments ago where our team decided to go 3-4 Ana's on Gibraltar, I was the original Ana and refused to switch because I got first pick. We almost actually won that game.

Also, I was robbed of the title.

I had a silly idea for torb just now and wanted your guys' opinion on it. What if healers (and 76) could repair torb's turret by healing it (since they can already repair omnics). Would that be too far fetched?

So I got kicked from a game for being inactive...

While playing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JhmZdu2OVc

Doesn't game count staying in spawn area as inactivity no matter what you do inside? When spawn trapped I usually every now and then peak out from spawn quickly so game sees me as active.

If you play Tjrob then you can babysit your turret. I have myself and 5 actual players to look after already as healer.

Our Soldier sometimes just stood there looking around, not even afk, just looking at the fight from a distance. If it wasn't for him we could have won at the first checkpoint.

That's a terrible mechanic for competitive.

Just because I had three teammates quit out on me, doesn't mean I'm going to just constantly feed kills to the enemy team for 2 more rounds.

And my wife who was the Lucio of the game never left either, thats why you hear me asking if she got kicked too.

I got once kicked for inactivity when I stood on objective as Mercy for 40sec or so, healing beam locked to our tank and just chilling as waited 6on2 round to end. Best part is that I got warning about inactivity at same second as game kicked me :D So I guess at the end I haven't nailed it down what all affects it. Peeking out of spawn is what I started to do after got warning by doing what you do in video, since then not gotten warnings during spawn locks.

Oh, a new thread. Fun!

I actually had some decent games last night. It was refreshing to actually win some games instead of being steamrolled over and over.

That being said Blizz really seemed to have fucked the matchmaking somehow.

Played Reaper for the first time in quickplay.

True easy mode...

The fact that my Lucio has easily toyed with Reapers in the past leads be to believe that they were all ass.

Lucio, Tracer and Genji are shitty to land consistent hits on. You can have aim dead on and pull the trigger yet nothing happens at receiving end, keeps skating around at 100% HP. That said I think most Reaper players just suck as him and can't flank for shit.

DPS in general is very relaxed role to do when compared to tanking or healing.

I bet when they start to see clear drop in active players they implement stuff like "Extra XP & one lootbox for first victory of the day!" to give that incentive to keep playing. imo they should have done that on day 1, but thats just me.

Irks me in competitive that if you're the only support player you'll basically get spammed to be either Lucio or Mercy by the rest of your team.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind playing as Mercy and even if Lucio bores me the most I'll take the hit for a team every now and then since he's probably the best support on the whole but there's situations where it's like I know for a fact that Zen would work better for me than Mercy for sure and therefore the team depending on the rest of their choices.
But a lot of people seem to think she's the automatic way forward, yeah maybe if you're actually helping to keep me alive and aren't scattering off to the four corners of the map on individual quests to get sick plays instead of pushing the payload Mercy can be hilariously potent.
But then you get the people that begged you to fill that role playing their DPS like trash and it's like "dammit man, Zen is the hero you need right now!".

It's either this or someone spamming Reinhardt until I think "fine I'll do it" so they can go back to their attack Junkrat on a payload map or something equally as dubious.

Lucio, Tracer and Genji are shitty to land consistent hits on. You can have aim dead on and pull the trigger yet nothing happens at receiving end, keeps skating around at 100% HP. That said I think most Reaper players just suck as him and can't flank for shit.

Bad Reapers are something special, he's definitely what I'd consider an easy mode here for the most part.
So when that guy who insta locks him in competitive is constantly running into a Rein shielded defence firing away and never actually using the teleport to *gasp* flank, you know you're in trouble.

Fucking ludicrous how super fast Ana gets her ult, especially when it's insane damage done and taken buff to its target. If team fight drags on even little she can ult 2-3 times during it.

Hurts to play as Zenyatta and see your team scold you for not healing them as they run from your LoS and die thinking having a Harmony Orb is Transendence, or that one random slip up you have they saw while respawning convinces them you're shit at the character.

Despite you getting +10k heal, and in top 3 of eliminations or damage done at the end of the match, they will still say you should've went Mercy.

Does the Brawl give you rewards like it does in Hearthstone, i.e. a loot box for your first win each week? Or is it just for fun?

It's only for fun, no unique rewards. (Now where's the Arcade Mode weekly brawl?)
