Overwatch wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2016

Deserved.

I played for about 150 hours on PS4 and after years of hesitions I'll finally building my first PC to play this game without limitations.

I can't wait to unleash my hitscan abilities.

And this is how the FPS genre dies. Not from Call of Duty being complete garbage, but from hero shooters. Rip favorite genre.

Fucking Quake Champions.

Nah. Other companies will chase the hero shooter cash for a little bit, but they'll move onto a different niche when they realize the Blizzard machine is unstoppable.

More like RIP hero shooters that aren't Overwatch.

Absolutely deserved, the design on this game is incredible.

The characters - animation, gameplay, visually, are all presented to be incredibly different
The maps have to accomodate all this stuff so Genji has plenty of walls to run up on, Widowmaker has plenty of sniper opportunities, D.va has plenty of flanking spots, Reinhardt has plenty of funnels where you have to go through his shield.

Like holy fucking shit all the balance, design, presentation, fun factor, matchmaking, its all so fucking well done.

And then its true secret, almost every match is a 99% vs 99% overtime. SO TENSE.

The game is awesome, lots of fun for casuals and pros and have a big cast of lovable characters. Not too surprising that it won GOTY.

Not too surprising that people will complain that a multiplayer only game won either though. If it doesn't have a story or campaign, it's not worth it huh?

Personally, I'll go for a polished multiplayer experience every time over a multiplayer experience that is compromised because resources were poured into a halfhearted "campaign"/story. If I want a well crafted, immersive story I'll pick up a book or go to the movies.

Even the best videogame stories, IMO, are trash compared to other mediums. There have been a handful over the years that tell a story well; TLOU comes to mind, as do some of the Bioware games and even several Witcher 3 quest lines. All of those, for as good as they are within the setting of a video game, are still B-tier storytelling at best.

One of the reasons the Bethesda RPGs are so good is because they shed the pretense of a force fed "story", and let the player loose to go ahead and tell their own. I think Fallout 4 actually suffered a bit, because Bethesda uncharacteristically made things a bit too linear.

For me being Multiplayer only isn't the Issue It's a Content issue with me. For example Destiny got killed for lack of content. Yet it had more content than Overwatch.

I guess I don't understand why some games get slammed and not others. Content is Content has nothing to do with enjoyment of the game.

I dunno. Expectations? Blizzard wasn't pitching us anything they weren't selling. We slapped down our cash with perfect knowledge of what was in the package.

And for the sake of argument I'll just let slide the claim that Overwatch is light on content. And also the claim that Overwatch hasn't been slammed for it.

PLAY OF THE YEAR

Underated pôst...

Well-deserved, no doubt, this game is just magical, I'm happy UC4 got almost nothing too, this game was the most disappointing thing I've played on PS4 so far, even best narrative is ridiculous but whatever, congrats Blizzard.

Well deserved, Overwatch is a classic. I can't remember the last time I delved into a competitive shooter. Overwatch had something for everyone. You didn't need to be good with traditional shooter mechanics to enjoy the game. Easily my most played new game this year. With how unique the characters are, I'll always wish there was single player/campaign, but whats there is incredible.

Between Doom, Overwatch and Hitman, I can't decide which was the favorite 2016 game I've play. It's been a really good year for me. BF 1 is also great, the Witcher 3 DLC was amazing. At least 2016 had good games to help forget about the rest.

Absolutely deserved. In a year where call of duty was especially week, activision still had the best first person shooter of the year.

Overwatch will still have millions of players long after consumers have basically forgotten the names of every other game that came out this year.

I was happy to see Overwatch, Doom, and Inside all win significant awards this year. They were all amazing for different reasons and all managed to create something that extended them beyond just being a game:

Inside - Just a work of art, really. The story was deep and memorable and that Orwellian-setting was so powerful.

Doom - Like a shotgun blast to the face to all FPS fans, old and new. Nobody truly saw it coming. It brought back a gameplay style we have not seen success in decades. It was refreshing and fun. Low on health? Don't run away and take pot shots from behind a crate (you've been doing that for the last 10 years)... run in there and bash some heads.

Overwatch - Let's face it, Blizzard created a universe here. it's resonated with so many fans that eat up all the lore, the comics, the animated shorts, everything. Fan-made content (not just the porn) is plentiful, and it's continuing to grow. The game itself managed to break into and sustain a huge multiplayer presence in a world with CS:GO, Dota, and LoL... that is something that is incredibly hard to do. It's really a once in a generation game and deserves its accolades.

I would have PooPoo-ed all over this if I hadn't gained access to the game last week. Fantastic game. Well deserved.

Literally no one on my 50+ person battlenet friends list has played it since launch week, so I dunno where the fuck these people are coming from. Maybe the cosplay/fan art communities make it seem like it's more active than it is?

I guess winning one of the sloppiest award shows ever put together was easy with a weak year for "GOTY" contenders, that such a shallow team shooter could win the most prestigious award.

It was my choice because it's probably the game I've played the most this year whether solo or hanging with buddies, but I honestly thought Uncharted 4 had this category on lock-down.

Congrats to everyone at Blizzard!

I had a b.net friend list full of wow people. Most of them are overwatch people now. Consider that with the fact the two genres are so different.

Ancedotes followed by salt. Oh, its beautiful.

I'd rather people simply said, I prefer games that provide a variety of game types over a variety of playable characters, which would be understandable, rather than make the absurd claim that Overwatch has a lack of content.

Any one of the characters is Overwatch is distinct enough to support a whole game of their own, each providing a unique style of play. That may not be "content" in the traditional sense of maps and modes, but it is absolutely still content and worth the cost of entry and the resources dedicated.

Over 20 million registered accounts in October, up from 15 million 2 months prior.

2 full blown seasonal events with unique game modes, 3 competitive seasons in (which were newly added after launch), weekly brawls, 2 new characters, 2 new maps, preparation for a contracted Overwatch sports league, and a new mode that cycles brawls, unique game modes, and other goodies.

The Game Awards are a joke but let's not pretend that Overwatch is populated only by the "cosplay/fan art community" or is a remotely shallow experience. Shockingly your circle of friends aren't the only people on the planet.

Oh yeah, it's only cosplay and fan art people playing. Those dastardly fake gamers strike again! Curse them!

But no one else I've ever read seems to think this was a "weak year" for great games either. So maybe your bubble is just very atypical?

Titanfall 1 then. They never oversold what we were getting yet the game was still slammed for lack of content. I do find it weird but whatever.

Great choice and well deserved. I know people get all up in arms about a multiplayer only game winning goty but imo MP games like OW can offer more terms of value then single player cinematic games with a great story.

I have played Uncharted 4 and it bored me to tears towards the end. Looked amazing visually and there were some awesome gameplay moments but about half way through, I just wanted to finish the game and never go back again.

Did D.va piss on your dog? Jesus this contempt.

I can understand not liking the game or having your own goty but this sentiment is baffling.

Personally, this is bullshit. Multiplayer only games are like unfinished games to me. There's little point to things if a narrative isn't present to guide it along and provide motivation . Gaming is not only gameplay, but also a lot of other things.

I should add as well that I have played the game and found it wanting in the fun department. For FPS's they should have gone with DOOM. Now that's pure gameplay bliss with a narrative spine to it.
DOOM mocked narratives in games at every turn. How can you want that to be goty and not understand what it was doing lol

Very well deserved. I literally had not the slightesf interest in OW up until launch, then bought it due to the incredibly well reviews and didn't play anything else since.

Have played it and think it's fun, but I fall into the "should have campaign/single player" crowd. Just don't think it deserves GOTY based on that. That component ,to me, is necessary. I would have loved to have played a story mode with such cool characters.
Just glad that Uncharted didn't win and sweep the whole awards show.

Everybody on my Battle.net friend list says that Arkeband is literally the worst poster on NeoGAF.

Tough break, man.

Rumors point to a single player mode coming at some point. Considering it started off as an MMO it's not far fetched, and there's been a desire in the community for it.

The cultural appropriation in Overwatch is well documented and has been covered extensively, I'm not the first to mention this.
Literally the only thing that could be argued is symmetra ' s Hindu skins and those aren't cultural appropriation by definition because symmetra is Indian herself... they just might be a bit insensitive.

Having characters of different nationalities in your game exist isn't fucking cultural appropriation.

I have a feeling it will take the same spot on my list. I've got a couple more games to play though before our GAF bloodbath starts.

It was hella fun when I played it, and I'll probably go back once I finish some other games. I'm playing some BF1 multiplayer recently, and thinking about how boring it is compared to Overwatch.
