Overwatch wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2016

The two best choices weren't even $60 games. Overwatch is $40 and Inside was $20, it really shows how much games have shifted. I would've preferred Inside as I think it's a really important game moving forward, but I've put plenty of time into Overwatch and love it.

Blizzard finally pulling a big win.

We know who rigged it!

Yeah. Crooked Hillary and Y2Kev. #fuckthisforceddiversityshit and all that. :p

And this is how the FPS genre dies. Not from Call of Duty being complete garbage, but from hero shooters. Rip favorite genre.

Fucking Quake Champions.

Eh, we'll see how it pans out. BF got sales which shows not everyone wants a Hero Shooter and people still play TF2 for class-based shooters.

I don't think Overwatch is a bad game. But I don't think it's a "GotY" game.

Well at least we can quit it with the "awards are biased towards story and don't care for gameplay"
I mean, they can still be biased towards story games even if they don't aware one a GOTY every single year. I don't think this is going to be a common thing going forward. Overwatch is just an exception to the rule more than anything. As someone who doesn't much care for online multiplayer-only games but has put 600+ hours into Overwatch, that's true for me personally too.

Very well deserved. It isn't my personal GOTY but it's definitely the best FPS I've ever played bar none. I've spent many hours playing it and look forward to many more. Community issues aside it's one of the best experiences I've had with a game.

Never played Overwatch. Not a fan of competitive multiplayer in general. I love the character designs though, and the gameplay I've seen looks pretty fun. It's also by far the most talked about game at work. I'm not at all surprised it won and it's probably well deserved.

Personally, I was rooting for Doom.

Great choice and well deserved. I know people get all up in arms about a multiplayer only game winning goty but imo MP games like OW can offer more terms of value then single player cinematic games with a great story.

I have played Uncharted 4 and it bored me to tears towards the end. Looked amazing visually and there were some awesome gameplay moments but about half way through, I just wanted to finish the game and never go back again.

UC4 did absolutely nothing new or innovative outside of having a few short pseudo-open world segments, so it really doesn't deserve any accolades from a game design standpoint.

OW doesn't do anything new either - the level design is generally poor, the game spent months out of the gate being incredibly unbalanced where you'd need to choose specific heroes for each map and those specific heroes all tended to be the same ones, and it's been rightly criticized for its gacha gambling system which we are sure to see creep into every facet of every future Blizzard game.

Over 20 million registered accounts in October, up from 15 million 2 months prior.

If we wanted to say subscribers are the be-all end-all of what makes a game good, then fuck, Pokemon GO was robbed.

And spare me their e-sports league marketing, they killed SC2 with how poorly they handled its e-sports scene, they'll find a way to fuck this one up too.

The beginning bored the hell out of me. Some of the end did too. i enjoyed Gears, Doom, The Witness and Inside more than UC. It was a great interactive story, but an okay game.

Well deserved. Overwatch wasn't simply a game, it was a phenomenon. While I wouldn't' call it perfect by any means (the loot system and microtransactions are crap for starters) I still loved my time with it, and it's nice to see a multiplayer only game win a big award like this.

Certainly wouldn't have been my choice and not something I'm even remotely interested in, but almost surely better than Uncharted 4 on gameplay alone. The areas in UC4 that were good were quite good, but there were about 3 of them.

People seem to get around that cognitive dissonance by implying that Overwatch actually isn't about gameplay and people bought it just to tug it to waifus.

Well you can't deny if there were Source Filmmaker Awards, it would have won that also

....Though it is kind of sad to think sometime in the future no one will be able to play this GOTY to experience it for nostalgia's sake, when the servers shut down.

I mean...you were the one who questioned the health of the game. You can't get salty when people give you the actual numbers.

New subscriber numbers doesn't equal retention/active players.

Blizzard has 2.5x more people registered to Hearthstone, is that healthier than Overwatch?

I tried a bit during the free weekend and it really didn't gel with me. But clearly I didn't put the time in.

Clearly a fantastic effort, props to Blizzard.

Watershed moment for TGA.

I have played everything from Modern Warfare going back to the PC to Battlefield since 2.

Team Fortress Classic?

I mean, I don't know what to tell you. It's utterly mind-boggling that a seasoned fps player would prefer OW to BF1 or Siege.

I still have to play this game, which is very weird as FPS is my favorite genre and I adore Blizzzard and the OW design in general.

I think I might have to finally pill the switch.

All I know is that Uncharted 4 would not have deserved it. It was a good game, but it was not GOTY. It just was not as fun as the other Uncharteds.

My personal pick is almost never on par with the winners, most the time I haven't even played the winners/nominees before lol.

Every-so-often we agree though. :) Overwatch is my GOTY.

I couldn't finish UC4. It just didn't have the heart, charm, or excitement of the previous installments.

It was technically wonderful, looked incredible and felt good to play, but it just lacked something special.

The fun gameplay too often took a backseat to some gameplay-light that wasn't engaging enough to compensate.

It was especially disappointing because they'd gotten that balance so very right in Uncharted 2 and had an emphasis on exciting scenarios.

There's more than 100K people watching Heartstone games on Twitch, pretty sure the game alright.

Overwatch has a lot going for it. A great developer pedigree, extremely polished gameplay, high quality music, stellar art, tons of character and a low barrier of entry. I think some folks are overlooking how good Overwatch is when viewed at a macro level.

All of the games on the list were good but none of them "nailed it" on as many levels as Overwatch did.

These are bad examples. I'd argue that ADS-type aiming annoys "seasoned FPS" players more than anything else. R6 and Battlefield have no substantial history with competitive play the same way something like Counter Strike or Quake has. OW has Blizzard behind it and continues to grow substantially in that regard. There's far more potential for competitive-minded players in OW than BF1 or Siege.

When they listen the nominees, i was completely uninterested in any of them, tbh.

Pre FFXV and Last guardian (which i still have to play) it was a really boring year for gaming, for me.

I guess OW deserves it going on buzz alone, though.

I agree, it was a bad send off for the series.

I really didn't like most of the nominations here.

Now I wonder what those people, who thought badly of Hennig and highly of Druckmann/Straley, think of Uncharted 4.

I am actually curious as to how Uncharted 4 would have been had they kept Hennig and her ideas in.

I did not like the inclusion of Sam. I liked some parts of him but he was neither a compelling character nor was his arc.

Alright, at this point there's really no point talking to you. You obviously want to remain ignorant.

It's definitely my GOTY because I spend more time playing that one than anything else.

That being said, what I've played of DOOM is ridiculously amazing so I could have seen that winning too.

Please note I play less than 10 hours per week and only on PC/Xbox One, so I have VERY narrow perspective of the current gaming landscape.

Overwatch and Rocket League are my favorite mp games this gen without a doubt. Both games that just are pure fun. Everything you need to just play the game and have fun is there from the get-go, and I love that. We need more games like these.

No, we need more "war is hell" black/white/brown games with sad violins playing while you respawn to remember you how horrible everything is.

/s

Totally agree with you.
