Owens MNF commercial?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I was listening to Mike and the Mad Dog here in New York today go off about some commercial Owens did last night before the MNF game, something about being in a locker room with a naked star of Desperate Housewives (for the record they were getting on ABC and the NFL, not Owens). Anyway, did anyone see this? Or anyone know where to find it? I'm interested to see how racy it actually was for primetime network TV.

It was nothing you wouldn't find on any sitcom that comes on at 8pm (She drops her towel to the ground and TO "sees" what she's got and decides to skip the game :lol). These puritans are really starting to irritate me....

NEW YORK - ABC’s “desperate” bid at cross-promotion backfired on “Monday Night Football.”

advertisement
The network’s steamy intro to the Philadelphia-Dallas game, featuring a naked Nicollette Sheridan jumping into the arms of Eagles receiver Terrell Owens, drew complaints from viewers and the NFL.

ABC Sports apologized Tuesday for the segment, used a day earlier to promote the hit show “Desperate Housewives” and broadcast just nine months after another football flap — the Janet Jackson Super Bowl fiasco.

“We have heard from many of our viewers about last night’s ’MNF’ opening segment and we agree that the placement was inappropriate,” ABC Sports said in a statement.

The NFL called the intro “inappropriate and unsuitable for our ‘Monday Night Football’ audience.”

“While ABC may have gained attention for one of its other shows, the NFL and its fans lost,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The spot showed Owens and Sheridan in an empty locker room, with Sheridan wearing only a towel and provocatively asking Owens to skip the game for her.

After she dropped her towel, he smiled, agreed to be late for the contest and she jumped into his arms. Sheridan was shown only from behind and above the waist after she dropped the towel.

Then the shot panned out to two more stars of “Desperate Housewives,” Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman, watching the scene unfold on a television and commenting on desperate women.

The Eagles said they appreciated ABC Sports’ apology.

“It is normal for teams to cooperate with ABC in the development of an opening for its broadcast,” the team said. “After seeing the final piece, we wish it hadn’t aired.”

ABC has broadcast “Monday Night Football” with a 5-second delay this season, a precaution after Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at February’s Super Bowl.

At halftime of that game, Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Jackson’s brassiere, exposing her right breast to a TV audience of some 90 million. The Super Bowl was broadcast on CBS, which was fined a record $550,000 by the FCC.

FCC.

I wasn't paying much attention during most of the ad (I was on my PC and my roommate was watching the game)...It seemed pretty tame from an appropriateness standpoint. I was just kinda ticked at the blatent over promotion of Desperate Housewives. I don't mind the announcer spending 15 seconds to tell us when the show is on, but a whole skit just to pimp a show is pushing it.

Mike and the Mad Dog really went off on that commercial, they probably talked about it for over an hour. I didn't think it was objectionable, just kind of bizarre. Then again I guess if you're middleaged and have kids like they do it would be more offensive.

The FCC is actually looking into this. It's a womans bare back, that's it. You can turn your TV on anytime during the day and see that.

Do you guys feel the mass reaction would have been the same if Owens were White, or if it had been another athlete altogether (since Owens is pretty much the NFL's favorite target).

No, it wouldn't have been the same. Less of a reaction if it were a different black athlete, and much less of reaction if it were a white guy. Fuck, there'd be no reaction if it were Peyton or Eli Manning. The NFL and ABC sure as hell wouldn't have apologized for it.

ABC should be fined just for having such a lame cross-promotion. Meh.

Less of that junk, more stuff like Howard Dean yelling out all the NFL cities!

Difference is, Peyton would have tried to pass the ball to her and push her into the endzone. Eli would have demanded to be traded to Teri Hatcher, and The Michael Vick Experience would have gotten off in 4.2 seconds flat.

It'd been the same. People are getting really f'ckin uptight now about the smallest things. The whole Janet thing has really started a domino effect on everything.

With that said, Nicolette Sheridan is hot!

Suddenly this thread is interesting..

Ahem

Anyways. I agree. A bare back was shown on TV with boobies being implied.. damn. My child's fragile little mind has been horribly warped. How dare ABC attempt such a blatant imitation of NIPPLEGATE!

Eh.. sorry sleep helps my ability to be sarcastic. I should just stop.

In any event, I'm sure this will only snowball if some random djs are harping on it. It creates public interest like this and once a few of the more mainstream hears how outraged they should be over this.. it'll be all over.

Can't wait for the immense backlash against ABC, not to mention the countless replaying of the clip leading up to the dropping of the towel.. (Which IMO, is the more provacitive view and that is still not saying much.) Ahh.. When did America get such a knee jerk reaction?

:lol

I'm with Eli on the Teri Hatcher trade. Better yet, make it Eva Langoria.

That looks like some cheap porn.

and yea, I think it's ridiculous that people are overreacting to this, but maybe I'd think differently if I had kids.

Well, whatever. Shoulda been Vinny Testaverde so he could have fumbled her ass.

And no way we get this kind of reaction if it's a white player. Nice job, America.

Meh, I don't think it has anything to do with race. Hell, it seems like a non-story outside of the media. If I hadn't heard each ESPN program and affiliate blabbering about it every 10 minutes, I'd have never even known it had happened. Most people don't seem to give a fuck one way or another.

I dunno about that, people were outraged when Broadway Joe was stroking some stockinged legs.

Oh wait, those were his own legs, nevermind.

I heard a sportsradio host say the same thing this morning. I didn't even think about it like that till then....

PS: TO saying, "Oh hell!" is just classic though :lol

I saw most of the game, and I heard someone yesterday mention something about the scandalous opener, which I missed. I was expecting something Janet Jackson-esque, like it being a live shot and her towel really falling off etc and the camera exposing her. When I finally saw what all the fuss was about, I too became angry. ANGRY AT EVERY FUCKING PUSSIFIED CORNBALL WHO RAISED A STINK OVER THIS NON-EVENT.

This just fucking infuriates me. It's PRIME TIME folks. Grown folks time. Even then, the kind of thing you saw on MNF you see on daytime soaps EVERY FUCKING DAY. And if this was so scandalous, have they not seen the show the promo was based on, Desperate Housewives?? Why isn't there protest over all the smut that show is packed with?

And I don't think we can entirely dismiss the race issue (although I wouldn't call it the smoking gun) either. I'm usually very sensitive about when and where I apply the race card, because I feel it is often done a great disservice when it is used inappropriately, a la Michael Jackson etc. But it wouldn't suprise me if many of the people who complained, upon elaborating on their "rationale" behind their uproar, would drop some kind of racial connotation in their explanation. To say that a large chunk of the country, of all creeds and colors, doesn't continue to operate on low grade stereotyping would be ignorant. Many who don't consider themselves racists still think that the different groups should "keep to themselves", a kind of self-imposed societal segregation, especially when it comes to issues of family, relationships and sex. While I doubt that anyone so prone to hysterical overreaction would have based their uproar solely on the issue of race, I wouldn't be suprised if it wasn't the final straw that forced them to pick up the phone and dial the FCC or write a complaint letter to the network. While they may not have approved of Nicollette Sheridan clinging nude to Jon Runyan, it may not have driven them to such histrionics as when *gasp* big black controversial type-A male Terrell Owens swooped her up.

Regardless of the racial implications, this is clearly just puritanical self righteousness run rampant. I believe that our current socio-political climate has people so emboldened our propensity for outrage before rationality, a kind of O'Reillification if you will, that even if we're not that deeply offended by something, we feel a moral obligation to make a stir and look concerned and above the frey. It's maddening.

Rationality would force you to look at the whole picture. How about, oh say, CHEERLEADERS for fucking instance. Why do you think they wear those skimpy outfits, outraged viewer? For increased mobility? Do you know why they kick their legs up? It's not that impressive of a physical feat...ITS BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING TO SHOW YOU AS MUCH OF THEIR BARELY COVERED PUSSIES AS POSSIBLE!! And when one legs worth of cotton-infused pussy ain't enough, they toss each other in the fucking air so they can give you the full-splits camel toe action. Where's the fucking outrage over that? THEIR AIN'T NONE. In fact, many of the same people who complained about the housewives skit have their own little pussy-flaunters cheerleading at schools and universities all across the nation.

Selective outrage, and further, selective judgment is one of the more nauseating parts of mass culture. People are so willing to apply certain standards of judgment to things that they stand to benefit from the villification of, but they are not willing to hold their coveted comforts to the same standards. Fucking sad.

I like how the NFL is upset by this, but has it's games sammiched between tons of beer commercials with sexual tones (Twins?) and penis enhancement commercials.

cotton-infused pussy

This is today's phrase that pays!

Being black doesn't have anything to do with this directly. Being Terrell Owens does.

as an employee of abc... I have "no comment!"
(always wanted to say that)
- apparently the shot was created in west, I hear. It's a total mystery to me though, how it did pass the lawyers.

Something to think over though. November Sweep is coming up, and could we say, "deperate executives?" ;) Some of my co-workers are saying that it "could be" intentional for the sake of rating, especially when ABC is in the negotiation with ESPN swapping Sundaynight and MNF... and NFL might just drop MNF if the rating goes low. Some of my sports colleagues are a bit nervous about it too. And I remind you, that by no means that this is an official representation of the company though - (just have to play safe here)

MNF is a big card for ABC, and there's no secret about it - near 10 million (IIRC) viewers watch the show every monday. It's one of the shows where execs don't holdback any spending. I'm just as curios as you guys how the whole thing will affect me (because I am also directly involved with certain MNF stuff too). However, my personal opinion is... that FCC and NFL is actually "over-reacting" the issue - and all the bloating on CNN and Fox isn't really helping either...

I was going to make a small rant on this, but Ned nailed the point like a muthafucka. Etiolate also covered the beer commercials as well. Good to see there are a few people at least who see through the bullshit.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if there wasn't a racial overtone to this thing either. Hell, I always thought that about the whole Janet thing...if she was some white chick, would she be as badly villified? Who can say for sure?

BTW, there's no way ABC didn't know they'd get this sort of reaction in the new pussified America. Better believe Desperate Housewives will be the #1 show by far this Sunday.

I really hate it when the media forces these stories/scandals on us, the public. I gave a quick roll of the eyes when I first heard about the uproar. However, after hearing Tony Dungee's rant and all the hum-hawwing from the FCC, ABC and my beloved Eagles PR department I became annoyed. Aside from the points about cheerleaders and advertising which is enough to stomp this critical sneering whatever happened to athletes having fun? It's nice to see these superstars in another venue every now and then. One of my favorite SNL skits was during the MLB All-Star break a few years back and all these guys start to show up in this little kid's room and he's psyched but they all end up asking favors of the kid. Roughly 10 years ago Dan Marino was in a "low brow and disgusting" comedy to some, but I sure loved Ace Ventura. After the game TO was still having fun with the whole situation in interviews, however once this "outrage" started he's not said a peep (obvious gag order) or even been in practice. I'm tired of all this downtalking about how out of line ABC was and would actually like to see someone go off on a rant of Dungee's degree, but for the other side. Jon Stewart made light of it on The Daily Show tonight basically summing up everything said here and it sucks that it seems like I'm in a much smaller minority in terms of mindset compared to the rest of the country. I'd just love it for TO to come out after all this nonsense and stick it to the NFL by keeping the same attitude from Monday post-game.

They won't, however. They believe they have as much "politcal capital" as the president has becaus they re-elected him. They want a award for their loyalty.

First tragedy, then farce.
This is the stupidest crap.. the problem is people want to shield their kids from everything nowadays and live in some sort of bubble that isnt realistic. People are now pretending to give a shit about things they dont really care about, its like the fucking 1950's all over again, lets all put on a face for the outside world.

Another problem is people all assuming their kids are little angels, when the fact is they know alot more than the parents like to think they do.

To all the people that were outraged over this, allow me to say.....

YOUR DADDY STUCK IT IN YOUR MOMMY......AND I'M ASSUMING IT HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE.

Sure, maybe it didn't happen before a football game. Perhaps it happened at half time of one of them though. Or in the back seat of the car maybe after the game was over.

true, but does anyone (or Tony Dungy for that matter) really thik the producers of the spot wanted to make Terrell Owens look like some sex-crazed stereotypical savage? C'mon, it was just some dumb little skit meant to tie in to ABC's most popular new show. The fact that it is Thursday and people are STILL talking about this shit goes to show you how the media are a bunch of friggin' drama queens.

That's because everybody started offering apologies as if nobody had any idea that this piece was shot. First the NFL offers up it's hilarious take and pretends like they are even more shocked than CBS was over the Super Bowl. Then the Eagles have to offer an apology, yeah, like this was some news blast to them. Then the FCC rants and raves about investigations and then coaches start talking nonsense. I don't necessarily blame the media for keeping this story going, I blame all these people making their statements trying to sound like they're oh so sorry or completely clueless or just plain better manored or something.

Someone on the radio was mentioning that earlier...parents seem to think that the face they present to them is the way they are all the time, somehow forgetting all the things they hid from their parents back in the day. Kids aren't just seeing this shit and talking about this shit...they're fucking doing this shit. So seeing the nude back of a woman who let the towel drop isn't really gonna big a big deal to them, particularly when they can see more provocative skin in the numerous shower/soap commercials.
