OXM: Yes, Remedy still wants to make Alan Wake 2

No, Remedy hasn't given up on the Alan Wake franchise, and no, the developer doesn't appear to be working on a sequel for the moment - its hands are full with Xbox One's Quantum Break, out next year. You may deflate with disappointment at your leisure.

Sam Lake
"We're really, really proud of all the games we have made," observed creative director Sam Lake - the face of Max Payne, don't you know - when pressed on the subject by our friends at Xbox Achievements. "And obviously all of them are dear to us. They have a special place in our hearts."

"You never know about the future and as have we have said about Alan Wake, the sequel didn't work out at this point," he went on. "But definitely we are looking for opportunities to do more, someday, when the time is right."

"When Alan Wake came out, it was not a huge hit on day one. The Alan Wake franchise has moved more than 3 million copies since, which is a nice figure. But when the game was released, that was not the case immediately."

PLEASE HAPPEN

I have faith we'll see it one day... loved the original. But right now, I'm more hoping for Quantum Break to be good, and to eventually receive a PC port.

Make a new Max Payne first.

This. Max Payne 3, while a great game gameplay wise, lacked what the prior games made them so great; an awesome story. Did MP3 not do good enough for R* to merit making another?

Why did Remedy shift over and start making games for Xbox and PC? No love for Sony?

In the same way Sega want to make Shenmue 3, Atlas want to not be complete shitheads to the EU and Square-Enix want to do stuff with Dragon Quest in the west.

MS pays their bills with Quantum break probably.

I really hope that Alan Wake 2 gets made since it's one of my favorite games of all time but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I would love to see their original vision. When it was first shown it was supposed to be an open world survival horror. They locked down the Pacific NW feel and the Stephen King vibe but then, while enjoyable, it just wasn't the game it set out to be (IMO). It was too linear and the combat was really boring.

Here's an article explaining it:

Alan Wake, the game, what it was, was a genuine mystery for the longest time. A vague trailer was all we had to go on and the promise of something open and unique. So when the game was finally properly unveiled at E3, I remember feeling mildly let down, having gone years expecting something larger in scope.

“The biggest mistake we made,” said Häkkinen, speaking to Edge, “was following a sandbox design. It simply did not fit with our story-driven focus.”

Alan Wake was initially an open world game, but the team found it difficult to reconcile the challenges of creating an open world with the grand story planned for Alan Wake. Thankfully, the tools the team had developed over the opening years of development were flexible enough to help create the new, more guided experience that Alan Wake became — creating a world that felt bigger than its boundaries.

I honestly think a lot of the "we couldn't do a narrative" thing is lip service due to MS requirement and shoe-horning of the game into what they wanted to present. Which may be good. A story driven open world survival horror game (while sounding awesome) may just not work as it does on paper. But if anything, I think stories can definitely be fleshed out in open world games. You don't have to have 1000 Ubi's to collect or 15 GTA side missions ... many people go through these games without doing any of that stuff.

I don't know, it was one of my most anticipated games and then went B-tier with what it ended up being, salty tears for sure.

Hopefully they'll make a decent game this time, because the first two attempts with this IP weren't so hot in that regard.

As a result, Remedy couldn't secure funding for a full sequel. "Sure, we could have gone ahead and made something less ambitious, but we felt that that wouldn't have done justice to you guys, to us... and certainly would've have done justice to Alan Wake."

It looks like they see Quantum Break as a "Mulligans" to Alan Wake. I'm pretty sure if QB does fantastic - we'll get another AW.

MP3 did around 3 million iirc

They were happy with their partnership with Microsoft over Alan Wake, so they continued working together. I don't see how they "shifted over", they've never made a PlayStation game before. Max Payne console ports were done by other companies.

Alan Wake: Season 2 has to happen at some point. I'll be waiting patiently, but not too patiently.

Feels like I've read almost exactly this statement a couple of months ago. That's not saying this is old, but Lake seems to use the same carefully chosen words he did earlier.

I disagree - MP3 felt like a natural continuation of the series, especially in terms of tone (minus the lack of any surreal comic relief).

As someone from Brazil, the game was an amazingly knowing satire of a lot of Brazilian culture and society. It was hugely impressive from that angle as you could see exactly what Rockstar brought to the table.

Sure, it was basically Man on Fire: The Game, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and that was because of both the story and the excellent gameplay.

Yes, I still want Remedy to make Alan Wake 2. The setting and the atmosphere in AW was amazing.

I'm glad that they're working on a new IP, but I'm not completely sold on Quantum Break yet. It doesn't intrigue me as much as AW did.

Yep, that's partly why I thought Alan Wake was a disappointment. I was so hyped for years about this open world survival horror game and we got a ham-fisted action thriller game with a great story and setting.

I really hope they do it. What I've seen from Quantum Break doesn't get me excited. It's still Remedy though, might turn out to be good game, but the setting seems boring to me.

If Quantum Break does fantastic then Microsoft will fund another Quantum Break. And not a sequel to a game that - in their eyes - completely bombed. And since Remedy seemingly can't fund Alan Wake 2 on their own I really doubt there'll ever be a proper sequel. Which is a shame, because it's among my favorite games.

What would an Alan Wake 2 6+ years after the original even be? They'd need an exposition bomb to bring the people who never played the first one up to speed. Or bring in a new protagonist that investigates the Alan Wake mystery?

Yes, please! Loved Alan Wake.

Honestly, if they're willing to bring back Phantom Dust, they're willing to try anything. I could see an Alan Wake 2 happening.

I hope they bring Alan Wake back. One of my favourite games from last gen.

Although I am looking forward to Quantum Break. Remedy has a good track record so I expect this one to be as good as their previous games.

Absolutely loved Alan Wake. Id kill for a sequel. My only worry would be that one of the things I loved so much about AW was the Pacific NW swetting (ive been there and its jaw droppingly beautiful in places), im not sure id like it as much if it moved to a different location for a sequel. American Nightmare was good, but set in the Desert, it didn't do it for me quite like AW did

And I still want to play it :P
This isn't happening for another 4 years people lol

Same stuff that they have said since the beginning, but it is still nice to here them continue to say that. With that said though...

Actually there was never a shift, this was always the case. Remedy has never developed a Sony game. The ports of Max Payne 1&2 were done by a different developer.

I loved Alan Wake! Still need that sequel! But at this point it seems like it'll be quite a ways off if ever. I of course am hopeful, but cautiously hopeful.

Awwww yisssss.

I'd be happy to wait till later in huge gen for Alan Wake 2. First game was top 3 most underrated games of last gen for me.
