Pachter: Xbox 720 will launch at $99.99; have cable TV subscription

Are those EU services good? Not used Mubi or Vidzone. Isn't Vidzone a music service??

Mubi has some great free movies from time to time but also paid ones, It is actually a good thing

Vidzone has tons of music videos, the quality is not that great but it does the job
it has ads after a few videos but that is not a big deal

I won't buy if i'm forced to get a cable subscription.

I definitely don't need that garbage in my house, and i'm definitely not paying a subscription for it when i'll never use it.

This sounds eerily similar to that rumor that came out awhile back, the one about the Xbox "Loop" device, which was a smaller console with no disc drive. 2 tiered console strategy for next gen?

In the crazy dark negative universe this happens, it will not take off. Nearly everyone who is going to get this has cable already. Those who don't such as poor college students can't afford such a firm subscription anyways. At least with live you don't have to pay if you don't have the funds.

No way does the super expensive new console get sold at that price, even with a subscription. Also, Microsoft, if I want a cable box i'll get cable box, not a game console.

Consoles can't function like cellphones because new ones don't come out fast enough to keep you on contract the way the cellphone cycle works.

If true, the console better not be too expensive without subscription. I have ZERO interest in television.

Pachter: Microsoft, they have a strategy to take over the world.

I, for one, chuckle at the idea of having Microsoft overlords.

BTW, how do I get Pachter's job? It can't be too hard. I mean. Make sh*t up. Act all confident about it. Make sure your predications are far enough outside reality to get enough blog headlines to keep you looking relevant. Get drunk with investors and industry insiders. Rinse. Repeat.

I could do that.

Can someone give me a non-joke brief overview of who this Pachter guy is and why he says what he says?

Also, and this isn't a joke either, has he ever been right?

He's a financial analyst for Wedbush who specializes in electronics/video games. I'm sure he's been right about some things. But, he pulls shit like this out of his ass a lot, so he is wrong a lot.

I'm pretty sure he lives off the hate generated by Gaf. That, or he really really sucks at making realistic predictions. I believe he was predicting a WiiHD for like five years.

From the guy who speaks at a European developer's conference these days...
It's downright bizarre that he is invited there considering his limited perspectives.

A $400-$500 console day one or a $200 console with two year subscription would work. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony does something similar.

They do but they are way better at offering comparable services for every region. MS not so much.

I wonder if that just has to do with MS offering more features in general, so the gap is wider. Meaning if Sony offered a similar number of features, the gap would be similar. Europe is not easy to provide content for. Just look at how long it took Netflix to be supported over there, and even then it's limited compared to the states.

You are missing the point, why would I want to pay $500 for a box with half of its design and hardware dedicated for a use I would never take advantage of? Are they going to have a cheaper unit with different hardware just for games?

It is like buying a smart phone and never using data, Wi-Fi or 4g.

Or buying a PS3 at launch for $600 and not care about Blu-ray movies?

No way this will be the only way to pay for the console or it'll fail with the hardcore audience that made the 360 so successful in the US.

Im going to agree with him.

Hes gotten so much stuff wrong I think he's bound to get something right soon.

If I could really get cable TV out of this, meaning enough of the best channels to drop my current cable, I'd definitely buy it. That would be huge depending on the price. I'd need like:

ESPN
AMC
TNT
USA
Spike
Syfy
+a few more

Something like that

But people like freaking out. It's that normal around these parts.

Which is a shame really
.
For a Junior, you've picked things up real quick.
Incidentally, I'm sure there will be a XBL subscription price model as well for this system... something which should prove far more palatable to those of us who are cable-averse.

It would be sheer lunacy for someone to think that a cable subscription would be the only way to pick up the X360 successor.
But hey, people like to equate lunacy with Pachter hence the fanciful reactions.

There is nothing insane about seeing the current 360 subsidized subscription plan and thinking its a test for the pricing plan for their next console. There's basically no other way to look at it.

I just don't understand why microsoft would want to bring the cable providers into it. I've always been under the impression that microsoft wants to be the cable provider of the future. I just don't see what goal Microsoft would serve by getting in bed with the cable providers.

Xbox Live Gold has easily been Microsoft biggest success in their gaming department. You don't just toy around with that cash cow for no good reason, and Pacter never gave a good reason. Hell, can they even really work out a plan where they can get a better deal than the 400 dollar sale + 10 dollars a month that microsoft already gets. Why would cable providers want to give microsoft that much money? What is in it for the cable providers? What's in it for microsoft? Why would those two need eachother? Its not like a portable device where you need it to be everything thanks to pocket space, its a freaking box that stays next to the tv.

Seriously this prediction is sooo far out there that it really deserves an explanation from Pacter or else there really is nothing to say other than that's a really stupid prediction. And no, saying that "microsoft is interested in more than just games" is not enough, this is far beyond simply installing netflix and the like onto the console.

Edit: And it doesn't matter if the traditional option is still there. This still just doesn't make sense.

If this does happen, i won't be the only option.

Though I wonder, maybe we're hearing about this repeatedly because the 720 will be prohibitively expensive?

I'm surprised it's taken so long for this picture to show up.

I think the odds of the next XBOX being $100 and having a subscription payment plan for 2-3 years is going to be an option. A very successful option at that.

Since this is Patcher, we can assume the opposite will happen. That said, if Microsoft think that they can charge a mandatory monthly fee to use the box, they can get stuffed.

You are missing the point, why would I want to pay $500 for a box with half of its design and hardware dedicated for a use I would never take advantage of? Are they going to have a cheaper unit with different hardware just for games?

Its never going to be the same again, dedicated gaming consoles and devices are a thing of the past. I respect your opinion as a consumer, its very valid. However times are changing and changing fast.. multi purpose devices are taking center stage and in the battle for the living room the tactics have to adapt fast in order to be competitive.

You (me, us, GAF) are the vocal minority, the quickly shrinking minority who's opinions and tastes are finally starting to loose its grip. PC gamers felt the sting a few years ago with shift mostly to the console crowd. Now console gamers will feel that same sting as the industry shifts yet again, this time to a social, multi service, cloud based system that can service every kind of consumer out there. Games, applications, media consumption .. you name it, the next Xbox is going to hand deliver all of it on demand, a la cart. A subsidized entry price (ie $99 w/contract) has proven to be beyond successful with the cell phone industry and MS is going to run with it with their next gen. Consumers will probably fall right in line, this pricing model will feel right at home and not confusing at all.

MS wants an Xbox in every household and no longer under the TV of the 18-35 year old male. You are a consumer, no longer the consumer. It will never be the same again, we are old men shaking our fists at the clouds. We are being bred out, drowned out by a younger generation of gamers/consumers who are raised with services like these. They come to expect their devices to do more. With every year more and more of them enter the market and slowly but surely us old timers, us enthusiasts will be drowned out completely and left only to remember the old days of gaming. We are turning into our fathers.

Nothing you or anyone does will change this.
