Just saw this on Blu Ray. It was better than I expected but I really dislike the majority night/underwater fights to make the CGI look better. I also don't like slow-bumbling mechs -_-

This movie proves a live-action, big-budget Gundam movie can be made though. That would own so hard

My disappointment was how fragile the mechs were during combat. Kaiju take down the Chinese and Russian Jaegers like a second hand action figure. What's the point in making a massive billion dollar war mech when you can pop it's head like a soda cap. But when the Jaegers take down a Kaiju, every fiber of my being cheered. I hope there is lot more badass element to the Jaegers rather than them getting shat on by Kaujis like they're ragdolls.

Cherno and Crimson are very old Jeagers that were effective against the original kaiju. but as the kaiju kept getting stronger as the portal grew wider allowing bigger monsters in, they couldn't keep up.

I thought Crimson was the second newest Jeager after Striker?

I just watched this thing. I know, really LTTP.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and wish I could shake Guillermo del Toro's hand personally and congratulate him on knowing his kaiju films and nailing this random big-budget Hollywood adaptation of all the best of cheeseball kaiju gloriousness on a hundred-million dollar scale.

Now on to the Godzilla remake!

Rewatching I forgot how bad the fake Australian accents are in this movie. Oh my god. Any time the father and son talk together I can't pay attention to the words it's so bad. There's a deleted scene with the two that's just a smear of awful.

As if there is such a thing as a good Australian accent.

You have to remember that the Kaiju were nothing more than genetically engineered monsters. Every new Kaiju was an adaptation to the threats the previous Kaiju faced.

Crimson Typhoon's weakpoint was its head, so the Otachi Kaiju was created with a nimble tail and it knew exactly where and how to strike to quickly take down Chrimson. Cherno Alpha has extremely thick armor plating, so the Otachi was equiped with acid as a way to penetrate the armor. Its secret weapon was the ability to fly, which Jaegers obviously can't.

Leatherback was equipped with an EMP device because the aliens figured out that electricity is what powers the Jaegers.

Also, the Kaiju Precursors were aware of what Jaegers would be coming to face them, because Newt had told them via his earlier drift.

In the commentary, Del Toro talks about wanting that crushing and hopeless defeat before the hero moment, and I think it does elevate the battle that follows. It's also very anime to have things being a slog but everything is going okay, and then people are just dead so quickly you don't even have the time to process it.

it would be worlds of awesome if in PR2, we get a flying jaeger! i hope the kaiju thing replaces the zombie thing.

whats a slog?

Finally some news on PR2, by Thomas Tull producer & head of Legendary Pictures! :

TULL: We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek- so for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well. It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it.

I don't want to get my hopes up too quick. It's all sounding very vague to me. They are "open to it"...Just do it dammit. The world needs more giant robots fighting giant monsters.

"Something to say"

I don't like that part of his quote. What the hell do they need to say about some Jagers punching a bunch of Kaijuu in the face.

Also, I hope they clean up and tighten up the stuff where the humans aren't in the mechs. That is the one (major) sticking point to the movie, I think.

PR in 3D IMAX was the best theater experience I've had in decades, and I'll never get to see it that way again.

If PR2 comes out with the same bells and whistles, I'll be there day one, and day two as well.

That's the saddest thing about PR. I saw it in IMAX, but when I tried to show friends on bluray later, it didn't have the same effect.

Please let Pacific Rim 2 happen Legendary!

Well we all know that Del Torro has said on record that he has lots of ideas for a sequel, I think I remember reading he had even started writing it already? So if they go to him being open for a sequel I can't for the life of me imagine he'd say no.

Yeah but he also wants to do hellboy 3 and I don't we will get it :(

Difference here being, the studio is interested in and open to doing Pacific Rim 2. There is not a studio that is interested in doing Hellboy 3.

Which is a fucking criminal shame because the story needs a goddamn conclusion already.

The film's theme popped into my head instantly when seeing this thread and now I'm listening to it repeatedly on YouTube. Thanks GAF.

I would love a sequel.
