Second viewing was great for me, personally. I can see how the film loses its luster once you know the outcomes of every scene, but what kept me interested were all the little details. I absolutely love the town built around the Kaiju skeleton.
Oh that makes sense. We were laughing really really hard at how much the blondes looked alike at that scene, and the intercutting. The movie lost a lot of credibility by that point for me.
Just got back from a packed 12:30 showing. Big fun stupid giant monster movie, with about as much character depth as an episode of DBZ. Loved it. What a special effects bonanza. The value in this movie is in the fights, really delivers. Our theater clapped and cheered at the
sword reveal in space, and the subsequent slicing that followed.
Seriously, just sit back and have a good time, you're not going into this for the memorable characters.
Edit: Also, I hope this movie makes bank so all the GAF naysayers eat a nice helping of crow.
Saw it in IMAX 3D, no regrets at all. Amazing film visually. Only a couple minor places where the 3D felt "off." Vast majority of the time it looked fantastic.
I've called 4 Toys R Us's and none have it. What's my best bet brick and mortar style? It's raining hard as hell in Florida and I want to play in the rain like a kid again
Wow! I quite enjoyed that. That is the quintessential movie for guys! My son who is 8 loved it. I've never seen him so excited after a movie before. Just for that alone it was great!
I was already gone by that point, so it was more ongoing joke with friends reaching a boiling point. Also it was a minor complaint, but stems from them looking closer in age than I'd expect a father-son team look. Also the MC and Aussie do look alike, it was weird casting between those three, and its not like any of their performances were blowing anyone off the screen (or even decent) that you had to keep those three. At least get something visually interesting in there.
My complaints were more
Idris's several telegraphed inspirational speeches that weren't inspirational. Main character lacking charisma and acting ability, swagger walking all over the screen the first 40 minutes. Mako's relationship w main character being underdeveloped and not believable. Scientists being embarrassingly unfunny. Perlman a generally joyless, confusing cameo. (see better director-actor cameo: Bruce Campbell in Spider-man)
Australian guy's beef with MC was weird also - "run away like you always do," when did he run away? He worked construction after his brother died and his mech was repaired. He momentarily thought about his brother in a scene where Mako screws up their first drift, yet they have beef. His goodbye with dad nobody cared about because he's never set up as likable. He hates the main character, but they never have a moment of respect, so that's just one of many threads that remains unresolved or dropped entirely in this movie. (see much better rival getting best out of MC: Iceman in Top Gun)
Second viewing was even better than the first. Cemented it as my favorite movie of a rather weak summer despite the flaws. Hong Kong remained ridiculous and completely thrilling. Visually, I don't know how anyone can mistake this for anything other than a Del Toro film. It's lovely and unique and the soundtrack has completely clicked with me. I found myself humming it during some of the scenes.
Great audience there, too. About 3/4 full. They laughed at the right places, actually cheered when
Gypsy fell back down to the Earth
and Ron Perlman got a big laugh when he showed up.
I still lament the missed opportunity in fleshing out Cherno/Crimson. Oh and something else that really jumped out at me? Mako should have been the main character. Not Becket.

Neca's got a great line of figures. First wave is Gipsy Danger, Knifehead, and Crimson Typhoon. 2nd wave is still TBA, presumed to include Striker Eureka.

i agree, but I doubt the studios were willing to add more to the production budget. Doing CGI scenes in broad daylight is expensive and difficult. The Industrial Light & Magic team that did the primary effects for Pacific Rim also worked on Star Wars (episodes 1 - 3) as well as the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. The computer / Jaeger UI elements plus background (i.e., set dressing) CGI stuff was done by another special effects house.
You could recast all the humans in Pacific Rim 2 and nobody would be bothered. Name another major blockbuster you could do that with, not even Shia from Transformers could be removed that easily without complaint. I guess that's the beauty to some people. If there
wasn't an hour gap between the first fight and second nearly
, that wouldn't have been as much of a problem. Just one well done character would have elevated this a lot. (Depp in Pirates)

The Australian guy is angry at him because the failures of previous Jaeger pilots like him were what cut the support for the Jaeger program. Australian guy's also just kinda an asshole; he is obviously based on Iceman, after all. The comment about running away was based on how MC left the Jaeger program instead of continuing to pilot machines.

He didn't even have another pilot, and there's nobody unrelated in the film besides him and Mako.
I felt like a lot of stuff was talked over in story rooms, they figured things out, and forgot to deliver them to an audience with necessary weight and execution. Mako and MC's bond being a huge one among others.

Prometheus is the only one you can recast everyone (which was the important stipulation) without complaint, and people hated that for that reason. Avatar 2 isn't making bank if Sully is out of the film, but its closer. You can't take Hulk, Superman, or Hugh Jackman (who is Wolverine to audiences) out of their respective films without huge audience reaction. This film you can replace the jaegers, kaiju, all the humans with different ones and it would be totally fine. The "characters" are totally replaceable. The art style is more essential than the characters.

Chuck was concerned that the Jaeger pilot being tasked with protecting Striker had spent the last 5 years working on the Kaiju wall instead of honing his skills. Chuck viewed Beckett's withdrawal after the death of his brother to be "running away". Chuck acknowledged his respect of Beckett after Beckett successfully repels both Otachi and Leatherback in Hong Kong.
Honestly, all of these scenes were pretty straightforward, I'm not sure how you missed it. It's not my job to convince you to like the movie, but it's best not to make criticisms of a movie that you didn't entirely pay attention to. You should probably head to the spoiler thread if you have any other plot points you need explained.
How much a movie makes you believe they did exactly that on screen? It's less about being able to explain things, and more about how well were those stories told.

What are you talking about? Of course you can't take Hulk or Superman out of their films because then they wouldn't be Hulk or Superman films. The actors that play hulk and superman get changed almost yearly, same with spiderman too. What about Don Cheedle being in IronMan 2 but not 1. Do you honestly think people cared about Sully in avatar? He was one of the most generic heroes I've seen.
They did replace Hulk. Twice. The only Hulk that people enjoyed was the one in the Avengers.
The entire cast of Man of Steel has no charisma or personality, Superman least of all. This isn't a Christopher Reeves situation.
I'll admit I forgot Hugh Jackman... But it's because of his popularity from previous movies, not because of the actual quality of his character or performance in Wolverine: Origins. Hugh Jackman is one hell of a talented actor, but virtually everyone else in that movie is replaceable (And several of them are replacement actors for returning characters).

You seem to be confused; you were talking about casting previously, now you're talking about characters.
A movie like Man of Steel can't work without Superman; it's focused on one character. A movie like Pacific Rim is focused on a conflict and on multiple characters, so no one character is the draw of the film. A Man of Steel sequel needs Superman, while a Pacific Rim sequel just needs the setup of Jaegers vs Kaiju.
It has nothing to do with the quality of the individual characters and everything to do with the structure of the movie.

Pacific Rim's story was never about one person either, it was about 3 things coming together: humanity as a whole to fend off an alien attack, giant mechs, giant monsters. They were never trying to set up an iconic figure like Hulk or Superman, or even Godzilla that was the end all, be all of the movie universe.
