Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Just watched it, thought it was pretty bad. The only things going for it were that the mechs and monsters looked impressive.

Couldn't really give a shit about any of the characters and I can't remember the last time the climax of a film elicited so little emotional reaction. I expected more mindless action and less focus on the story and poorly developed characters. Flashback scene involving Mako was especially bad. Action wasn't great either, the sequences were overlong and rather samey, not helped by the fact that it was always dark and often surrounded by waves, thus serving to obscure vision. Sound was overbearing as well.

Also, this is a rather personal issue and not directly a criticism of the movie but I am getting really, really sick of the White male-Asian female pairing.

wow, you must be a really fun person

Film was wonderful. A real old fashioned adventure flick. Characters were great - don't get the complaints. Even my girlfriend, who I had to drag along, really loved it.

Saw on IMAX 3D and have to admit at points I couldn't quite make out the shapes of the kaiju but overall the action was epic and beautiful. The size and heft of the combat is stupidly awesome.

So much heart, so much fun. Easily the best blockbuster of the year.

I agree that the ending is a let down.
the whole thing "let's throw the bomb using the robots thousands of meters under the water was stupid and the fight boring because of it being underwater.

Maybe they could have used a jet to bomb rim first then, after the discovery of the "gates", they could have gone hunting for a kaiju to be used as a trojan horse.

It would have been a bit of anti climax but a satisfying battle (maybe hawaii?)

I appreciated the fact that we see a bit of the other side.
It seems there are some problems with the sun, moon, maybe their world is in danger now?

My fiance enjoyed it, but she was surprised by the lack of women in the movie. After leaving the theater, we were thinking that Mako was the only chick in the entire movie, but then my fiance remembered the co-pilot of Cherno.

I think that was it.

Hey, you're forgetting the Chinese lady that freaked out when Newt had a nervous breakdown in the shelter.

...She's actually the only other notable female I can remember from the movie.

Caught it late last night with a friend, just wanted to chime in with more love for this movie. One of the coolest experiences I've had in a theater.

Did anyone else feel like doodling robots after their viewing? Think I'm going to pick up Sketchbook Mobile and see it again.

I saw this Friday

And I still can't stop smiling from it, with all of it's bad dialogue and script this movie really did make me feel like a kid again. It's been a long time since a summer blockbuster had that type of hold

saw it in imax yesterday. Sure a lot of it was generic and clichéd to all hell but fuck if I didn't come away with a huge smile on my face. the love and attention to detail is something they deserves the utmost appreciation

Took a friend to see this last night, we both loved it. It was the first time I went to a movie/restaurant combo, so maybe that added to it lol. Beer and food+cinema....why wasn't it made like that to begin with...place was fucking packed too

so uh this is bad right?
or like extremely bad stuff?

It's not great but also not as horrible as tracking had it a couple of weeks ago.

Couple of comparisons:

District 9 OW: $37,354,308/ $115,646,235 total

Super 8 OW: $35,451,168/$127,004,179 total

Similar OW totals but both those films had much smaller budgets.

You tell me there is hope ?

So...experts on GAF weigh in...if such Kaiju really DID come from the Pacific would we make Giant Robots?

Yeah. We wouldn't wait the third one to realise more are coming. We would kickstart the shit out of every jeager per country and higher tiers would decide the design, features, names and weapons. We would never cancel apocalypse as we would farm these nasty kaiju for awesome entertainement, blood sport style, but on a fucking epic and massive scale. Also, no fucking pussy peace wall bullshit. And Tag Team (I want double Chernos landing double Tesla Punch at the same time goddamit)

Possibly. We should be looking at a fairly solid top 3 position in the box office charts. Which, for a movie with this large of a budget, isn't really saying much. The hope is that word of mouth will make weekend 2 to be as big or bigger, or for the international market to bail them out.

There is no way the second weekend will be as big or bigger. It's not Avatar.

Some international can maybe save this. People are crazy about it in Korea (very strong market for it's size)

If it can match Super 8 multiplier it could end up around $138M domestic. Again that is not great for a film with this budget but it won't fall into John Carter and Battleship territory.

Batlleship bombed that hard ? Wow never knew. I feel people were talking about it much more than about PR.

Has anything gone up its second week? That would be kind of unprecedented, and I wouldn't expect it, a lower than average drop off is the best we can hope for I think, and long legs from word of mouth and repeat viewings.

I want this to do well because I think a sequel has a ton of potential (look at the increase of quality from Hellboy 1 to Hellboy 2), but then again I feel like Del Toro's talents could be better spent somewhere else (like Hellboy 3... to bad it probably won't happen).

Perhaps he will do 'At the Mountains of Madness' and it will be R rated.
I can dream.

I am definitely starting to think I am one of the only people alive who found this movie to be pretty mediocre.

Nah, the critical reception hasn't been great either. The film is attractive towards the demographic which posts at this forum though, reception here is bound to be more positive (this isn't a criticism).

Critical reception has been pretty good, what are you talking about? 70% RT.

Plenty of people in this thread have spoken their mind and didn't like the movie. Then again they won't stick around to talk about a movie this dislike, why would they?

I'm saying the reviews haven't been great. 71% with a 6.7 average is indeed not great. I didn't say that the critical reception was terrible or negative. It is positive overall but a significant portion seemed to have problems with the movie as well.

Really enjoyed it and you could tell the whole theater did. I wasn't a big fan of some bay-esque close-ups (too 'after effectsy' for my liking) but it was the perfect weekend popcorn flick.

Sharknado killed the hype 'tho.

In spite of the fact that I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as a lot of folks here, I really hope it can pull out a decent theatrical run.

We need Hellboy 3 with Del Toro given whatever he needs to finish the fight.

Any reason why, or is it just one of those annoyances without explanations? I'd assume this means you've seen the pairing a lot, but is there more to it than just that?

Not calling you out or making fun of you, but I'm just curious.

Just saw it last night. Thought it was great.

My only 2 things that were weird were

1) they had push to talk? That seemed weird lol. Of all the technology. You'd think having an open mic would be better than having to reach up and touch a button every time

2) the nations working together? Haha. We all know that would never happen :p

Great movie though.
