PAL Charts - Week 12, 2014

28k is it not? Are MCV now wrong as well because people don't want to believe what they are saying?

I have no idea what those ratios refer to. I have no idea if its information from that one retailer, from all retailers, if its representative of the UK market or not.

Any set of numbers that depends on the notion that PS4 has sold 10K [or even 30K] PS4 units in the UK in almost 12 weeks is lunacy. How you can't see that is beyond me

The article says the XB1 is now in the lead. If people don't believe them fine but that's what it says.

MCV said last week that PS4 was still in the lead, then we know from shopto guy that PS4 sold more this week. You are trying to hard to extrapolate something that doesn't make logical sense given the numbers presented.

If we assume your first week number and this MCV quote is right...

...and they mean LTD TF numbers (not only first week) it would look like this:

TF XB1 LTD < 145k
Infamous LTD > 73k

=>

145k * 4 = 580k XB1 sold
73k * 9 = 675k sold

So this would mean XB1 sold more in 2014 than PS4. I doubt that, but well...

2014:

XB1: 580k - 364k = 216k
PS4: 675k - 530k = 145k

Infamous 73k is wrong.

I get that this is all confusing and there is a lot of funny math going on, but you need to make a more earnest effort to interpret data before you challenge other people on the fundamentals.

Well, either way, both informations don't add up at all. There's no way the PS4 sold 30k in 2014, while the XB1 almost doubled its 2013 sales.

not to mention anecdotal evidence with MGS platform sales:

PS4 (58%)
XBO (20%)
PS3 (15%)
360 (7%)

Now also, interesting - sharp fall of old gen versions despite still early part of next gen... whoever didnt think of offering next gen version for 2014 made huge mistake.

The article says that the XO has been selling more than the Ps4 for four weeks in a row.

Nothing about totals.
It says that about total...

Microsoft’s Xbox One has been the best-selling games console for four weeks in a row, MCV understands.

The machine has benefited from a £30 price cut, while the launch of Titanfall last week caused a surge in console sales of 96 per cent.

But retailers have told MCV that PS4 remains in control, and that Xbox’s recent success has been aided by shortages of Sony’s console.

No idea which article he's talking about.

If it's this one:

This month has seen both next-gen consoles finally get their hands on a big exclusive, but what do the arrivals of Titanfall and InFamous: Second Son reveal?

Well, we know that InFamous helped PS4 hardware sales jump by 106 per cent week-on-week. Titanfall, meanwhile, helped Xbox One to a 96 per cent sales boost.

MCV has also been told by a trusted retail source that Titanfall sold just under double the amount of units its first week than InFamous managed in its debut week, although of course Titanfall sales fell around 75 per cent in its second week leaving it behind both Sony's game and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

MCV can also reveal that around one in four UK Xbox One owners purchased Titanfall. Meanwhile, around one in nine PS4 owners acquired InFamous: Second Son.

None of this takes digital purchases directly from Microsoft and Sony into account, however.

It’s easy to argue that really InFamous and Titanfall are sufficiently different in theme and potential reach so as to render such comparisons meaningless. However, it’s just as easy to argue that at a time when hundreds of thousands of consumers are desperate to get their hands on new games for their still new gaming hardware, the performance of these early titles is telling.

It must take some creative maths to come to the conclusion htat "the article says that".

No they didn't. They said retailers felt like it was still in control due to low stock.

Infamous 73k is wrong.

Based on?

We have no accurate estimate for Infamous except TF is just under 2x Infamous

But we don't have accurate TF numbers or accurate Infamous numbers

Wow

There is no "felt"

But retailers have told MCV that PS4 remains in control, and that Xbox’s recent success has been aided by shortages of Sony’s console.

That is not a statement of feelings

Yeah the past few pages are a lesson in the importance of error margins. If your multiplying your errors and they are sizeable you must take your data with large grains of salt.

Based on?

We have no accurate estimate for Infamous except TF is just under 2x Infamous

But we don't have accurate TF numbers or accurate Infamous numbers

So is the thinking that Infamous sales are half of TFs two week total?

That would make more sense and keep PS4 ahead.

So is the thinking that Infamous sales are half of TFs two week total?

That would make more sense and keep PS4 ahead.

Hadn't thought of it like that but seriously doubt that's what they meant.

Pretty sure they mean Titanfall Debut week is just under 2x Infamous Debut week

Although I guess we don't know that.

That less than half is extremely important you can't assume half and gain remotely accurate results.

A 5k difference in infamous leads to a 45k hardware difference. You don't assume jack or least put a + or - 50% qualifier or 65%.

So where are my maths or interpretation wrong? Or is the article wrong.

Please point out what made you think xbox one is leading LTD. It will make it easier for us to point out where you've gone wrong.

TF XB1 sales 149k x 4 = 596k XB1
ISS PS4 sales 64k x 9 = 576k PS4

All based on week one sales of TF being +125k with 94% on XB1.

So where are my maths or interpretation wrong? Or is the article wrong.

MCV has also been told by a trusted retail source that Titanfall sold just under double the amount of units its first week than InFamous managed in its debut week,

Unless he wrote a completely incorrect statement he's saying Titanfall's first week sold less than double infamous first week. This means Infamous sold more than half of Titanfall.

That's all we can interpret.

So where are my maths or interpretation wrong? Or is the article wrong.

Well for one if you're doing your own math on this sort of thing it almost always helps discussion if you share.

The points of contention are what Titanfall XBO and Infamous have sold

I realize now that Titanfall's numbers in relation to [1 in 4] should probably include 2nd week sales considering the language of the article

MCV can also reveal that around one in four UK Xbox One owners purchased Titanfall. Meanwhile, around one in nine PS4 owners acquired InFamous: Second Son.

Although it's fairly clear that it means TF Debut week sold under 2x Infamous Debut week

MCV has also been told by a trusted retail source that Titanfall sold just under double the amount of units its first week than InFamous managed in its debut week

The problem comes from what Titanfall numbers you use and how much under Infamous is from it

well, if we use 125k Titanfall/70k ISS, we get:
125k*4=500k XB1 (136k YTD)
70k*9=630k PS4 (100k YTD)

I dunno this probably isn't worth the effort though.....

where is the 149k coming from

125*0.17=21.25

21.25+125=146.25

146.25*0.94=137.475

A large difference.

it's 125*0.27, 149k is correct (at least by his calculations)

He's assuming the 1:4 ratio is total which is weird but it's weirder to use the first week ratio and not bother to mention the total.

So I understand why he did it.
They're stating the attach rates a sentence after comparing the week one sales. If they don't state otherwise, the comparison is still based on week one sales.

TF XB1 sales 149k x 4 = 596k XB1
ISS PS4 sales 64k x 9 = 576k PS4

All based on week one sales of TF being +125k with 94% on XB1.
Where are you getting these 64k for ISS? That's your mistake.... using your 149k for TF then ISS is at minimum 75k... using the 125k for first week then ISS is at minimum 63k.

MINIMUM.

BTW we know for sure PS4 is leading in sales... MCV said that in TF week and now PS4 sold more in ISS week.... so you are dead wrong.

Last of Us has now sold 150k+ in Italy (from Sony Italy @AESVI's Italian videogame Awards "Drago D'oro 2014” where TLOU won both the critics and audience GOTY awards -also best script-).
Apparently there were also stock problems in the first couple of weeks which prevented greater sales (I'm not so sure I believe that myself but hey) being achieved.

They said Infamous sold just over half TF debut week. 64k is a fair assumption.

When talking about TF selling to 1/4 of XB1 owners no mention was made of debut week. Why would they use old numbers and if they did why not mention that?

Maybe the article is just wrong but my maths and assumptions based on it seem fair.

I wonder if there's other LTDs in there
