PAL Charts - Week 40, 2014

I'm not really shocked at Forza Horizon 2 bomba. They should have released it a few weeks before FIFA.

As for SSB. UK has never been 3DS-friendly.

That's a bomba? It sold better than the first one. And Helios said that digital made up a good chunk of their sales this time.

I won't pretend to speak for Microsoft but I will say that the lower price point and the holiday season are going to work well for the Sunset Overdrive bundle in the short term. The white color will also attract second console owners. Either swapping out the black Xbone for the white one or just picking up a new one. A lot of what happened with the Destiny bundle for the PS4. Except this is the same price as the black console.

Lower price will help sure i agree but i still dont think it will do as good as two of the biggest games this year (Titanfall, Destiny(on XB1)). It just doesnt have the hype at the moment.

I feel like the term "word of mouth" is being used incorrectly...

Having protracted sales and having word of mouth aren't necessarily the same thing.

It's the first handheld version of one of the biggest Nintendo franchises in recent history and it launched at list one and a half months before the console version. Should be quite an extraordinary seller.

Edit: but again, this is UK where Nintendo is almost non-existent. (for reference check the EGX thread right here)

Err...Nintendo had quite a good presence at EGX?

We will see how well it does. Seriously though, the game is a lot of fun and it's going to get amazing reviews. I guess we will have to wait for the numbers to materialize to see who's right.

That we can agree on :) will probably buy a XB1 for it some time this year.

Do you know the 360 era numbers to make such a statement?

Not the exact numbers. But I do know that FM3 & 4 sold pretty well over here. They were in stores for a very long time (Supply and demand).

On a more interesting note. As I was just searching figures and noticed that every Forza game has sold less then the previous one since FM3 (Which appears to the the biggest-selling installment). Hopefully FH2 can break the trend.

For niche gamers, Natural Doctrine debuted on #5 on Vita's individual chart, while it's nowhere on the PS3 and PS4 individual charts.

The game sold 70k in its first week according to MP90, thats not a bomba dude. WOM will be huge, it always is for Forza.
I mean it'll do well because it's the type of game that has legs and will be bundled at lot. But strong word of mouth? I don't buy that at all

Forza is a good game. People know that by now. They don't need word of mouth. That's for games in a new series or a different take on something. As good as Forza is, it's a known quantity and doesn't really have word of mouth. That's more the avenue of a game like Mordor and Sunset

On the other hand, smokydave, heatwaves shouldn't be an issue this time of year.
I was gonna go gym earlier, but I didn't bother because it was raining like crazy. I'm sure it affects sales as well. Next sunny day should see a rise. As long as it isn't too hot though

Surprised to see Disney Infinity 2.0 sink so fast. I wonder how it's performed over in the US. I also expect Skylanders will gradually decline, as there doesn't seem to be much noise over that any more.

Is this really considered a bomba for Horizon 2? Seems reasonable given what else is out this week; it does have two entries in the top 10.

Word of mouth happens all the time for games dude.

Yeah, for smaller releases like Deadly Premonition and Danganropa. How many 'Triple-A' releases from major western publishers have bigger sales in subsequent weeks than their launch week? Even mammoth games that sell for months and month like GTA and COD do the bulk of their sales in the first week after launch.

Right and almost no one talked about it here, on a gaming forum.

Since when was that a quailfier of anything?

I assure you, for Nintendos main markets (family's, Casuals, children) there was a hige presence at EGX and it was received and appreciated.

The way you are talking, its like nobody even turned up. The Nintendo booth was rammed out with people. Just because they didnt run back and post about it on Neogaf means nothing.

Fh2 looks like a lot of fun but not £329 worth, hoping for some crazy desperation deals at Christmas/January before I jump in.

I can't recall previous Forza games being as well received as Horizon. The game seemed to have cross over appeal. Also, I read an interview with a Playground dev, back in Aug, where he said H1 was still selling. Based on this, I expect Horizon 2 to sell really well via that term lol.

By all accounts it actually did. Sold better than FH1 anyway

The units on the Vita chart will be notably lower than either console though. It might well sell more on PS3/4 even if it doesn't chart.

That's part of the reason I'm stoked for a Vita top 20 though. Variety in spades.

Nearly all Forza games have scored well with critics. It's been pretty consistent, score-wise.

And as far as sales go, FH1 is actually one of the lowest-selling of the franchise. FM is far bigger.

Of course it means nothing. In isolation. But combined with the charts and other threads for similar expos in other countries it shows an UK market that gives less shit about Nintendo games.

Now I'm curious, what was the huge presence for the families, casuals and children? What's the perfect Christmas gift for that market?

See, now I know you're making shit up.

Ms have never released sales data for Forza Horizon, so we've no idea what it's total sales are. If you have a link, please provide.

I don't know why people say SSB for Nintendo 3DS had a bad debut. It should be around 40,000 at least (maximum is 50,000, but it's better to not think it did 50,000), that sounds solid to me. Yeah, Brawl fared better at debut, but it still seems solid to me, sales-wise.

Just "solid" is little for Smash Bros.

I wouldn't necessarily compare FH2 to SO directly. From talking to a few people I get a sense that there is some level of Forza franchise fatigue and most people who play Forza got it free with their XB1 last year.

SO is a new franchise and it breaks into a new genre for XB1, it probably won't set the charts alight out of the gate, these kinds of games rarely do, but I think with heavy bundling and aggressive pricing it could do as well as Knack.

I think the art and the humour for SO will really help the game carve out its niche. This reminds me of Borderlands again, everyone is saying it will bomb, because it looks different. I can't say I agree.

Didn't Forza Horizon 1 sell under 2 million copies? The sequel would do well to match that even if it is probably MS's key first-party title for Xmas 2014 alongside Halo collection.

The install base is just too small for the Xbone for the title to set sales records on fire, especially in Europe. Depends really on how much people in the US like racing games really. And Brits, to a lesser extent.

FM gets bundled to hell and back, FH doesn't.

True (I think FM2 was one of the most bundled games of all time. I ended up with four copies from just buying peripherals lol)

But here in the UK, FH1 has been given away for free with every 360 for about two years (The famous Halo 4 & Forza Horizon Bundle, which is still around and popular). So bundling is not exclusive to FM.

It always amazed me. What are kids doing with their 3ds over there? Building forts?
They don't come with an AC adaptor so the kids play 'em for three hours and then go back to their smartphones and tablets. Then at Christmas a well meaning relative buys them a Mario game and the wound is reopened.
