Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ holds on to the top spot this week despite an 85% drop in sales, forcing Ubisoft to settle for a No2 debut with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’.

After its blockbuster launch, only 63,000 sales now separates Black Ops from ‘Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’, making it the biggest ever Assassin’s Creed launch with 55% of sales on Xbox 360 and 45% on PS3. ‘Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’ is the only other Top 10 new entry this week, new at No3. EA’s other new entry, ‘Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows – Part 1’ can only summon up a debut of No20. However, EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ is still a star player despite making way for the new releases, down 2 places to No4. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 2’ is also looking healthy despite falling 2 places to No5. The rest of the Top 10 is dominated by Nintendo thanks to a strong performance from ‘Wii Party’ up from No12 to No6 and ‘Wii Sports Resort’, which returns to the Top 10 at No7, aided by a retailer promotion on the Wii hardware bundle. ‘Professor Layton and the Lost Future’ is down 2 places to No8, ahead of ‘Kinect Sports’ at No9. With ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ down 2 places to No10, Nintendo now have 4 games in the Top 10

Given the press release, we know that Brotherhood PS3 is 45%. This means that the maximum for Just Dance 2 is 106k, and we know from the press release that Need For Speed and FIFA are above Just Dance 2 in the combined chart, but under in the individual chart.

It's not much, but it does give us some caps on performance.

07 (17) WII Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
12 (04) 360 Kinect Sports (Microsoft)
26 (13) 360 Motion Sports (Ubisoft)

Appears like Nintendo could repel Sony's and MS' first motion control offense.

Motion Sports still doing way too well considering its quality. How many people bought it without knowing Kinect Sports even existed? Probably most of them...

Wow, PS3 software has done rather poorly, could it really be down to people waiting for GT5? (I haven't seen any advertising for it over here yet). Kinect software also seems to be on a downward spiral, though to be fair it seems like Microsoft have abandoned their marketing for it - there have been way more Nintendo adverts being shown (and strangely, ads for Medal of Honour PS3).

Quite possibly. Microsoft and Sony have strong ad campaigns and strong offerings, but nothing to compare to the breadth and depth of the more "casual" titles on the Wii, not to mention that they simply don't yet have the mindshare.

With enough money, time and content they could turn it around but it's going to be interesting to see what happens. The slide on the Kinect titles in the chart is noticeable, and the next two weeks should be interesting to watch.

Goldeneye is also holding fairly well, albeit at low-ish sales, slipping only a few places in spite of five new entries and some resurgent titles.

I'm hoping GE stays on the charts for a weeks more at least. Of course, I'm not expecting blockbuster status but I really hope it outsells all other Wii FPSes worldwide when its all said and done. It's a terrific game so I'm hoping for the best.

If Microsoft went the Nintendo route and bundled their peripheral in with a game, instead of throwing a game in with their peripheral, we'd have a much better idea of how Kinect was selling.

That's probably exactly why they did it.

Uk is Kinect second's biggest market, and it's doing poorly this week. Shortages?
How can you tell if it's doing poorly or not? Are you comparing Kinect Sports / Dance Central software sales on a install base of... I don't know, realistically less than 200k to Just Dance / Wii Sports sales on an install base of 7 million?

That doesn't seem particularly wise.

The context to define if it's selling good or poorly is based on the 5 million objective, the investment and the strategic importance of Kinect for Microsoft. Maybe it is selling good compared to past product launches, I'm not saying, just that this chart is not showing a phenomenon at work.

onken said:

To stop us from knowing? hmm.. I'm sure there are bigger considerations.

The strategy of selling a must-have title with its own packed in hardware has worked wonders for Nintendo over the last 5 years, maybe people are all clamouring for Kinect Adventures, I'm not sure.

You should take a look at last week's thread where we discuss the opening week of the Wii and how its software did (worse than Kinect's, at least in terms of number of titles / positions). The simple fact is that Kinect comes with a game, and that game isn't tracked in the UK charts so it's utterly impossible to tell how the hardware is doing.

Right, still Kinect Sports and Dance Central are losing ground. Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, Sonic Free Riders are out of the top 40. Based on this information, most people who assume Kinect is not selling very well.

So for clarity, we should see Wii's second week's software I guess.

You're still basing hardware sales on software sales vs other platforms which have an install base that's bigger by orders of magnitude. It's a fundamentally flawed argument.

swerve said:

Yeah, that would be fairly interesting.

Anecdotal of course but in Antrim yesterday, both ASDA and Tecso had no Kinect bundles (including systems) available, and GAME only had 10 standalone units (they were allocated 250+ apparently).

And if we are going by software sales, Move has been a disaster (which is not the case).

???

Do you mean it hasn't been a disaster in terms of hardware shifted? In which case, where are you getting your figures (I didn't think we had anything apart from the "shipped in Europe" figure from Sony a week or two back).

Nintendo Quarterly results that showed PS3 sales double in Europe after Move launch?
Yeah I know, life sucks
:lol

The fact Sports Champion was the only software to chart, it would appear the hardware itself followed the same pattern. This of course is not the case as the two are not related.

The point is, just because software for Move and Kinect isn't shifting does not mean the same for hardware.

Really? Blimey - not bad at all. How long did it sustain the bump? (and "life sucks"? Why, exactly?)

BTW - as regards second week sales of Wii software, looking back at the Chart Track archives, it was really only Zelda that held on just around the top ten for the few weeks after launch. It wasn't until early 2007 that Wii software started to really kick in.

Wii software kicked in? :)

Yeah, I guess if you've just shelled out so much for the hardware, it's a bit much to expect you to buy a bunch of full price games. I was expecting an ascent of Dance Central though.

"Kicked in" in that more titles started to chart, and stuff like Wii Play made itself a permanent presence in the upper reaches of the charts.

Exactly, It was weeks before I bought anything but Sports Champion.

I already had MAG, Tumble, Flight Control and Heavy Rain in my possession yet I bought a starter pack and additional Move controller.

But yeah, going on Wii exclusives.

12 (05) - Twilight Princess
30 (09) - Wii Play (Free with controller)

vs 1st week of:

05: Twilight Princess
09: Wii Play (Free with controller)
19: Red Steel
30: Raving Rabbids

So yeah, basically anyone trying to maintain that Kinect's software positions indicate some hardware sales failure... you might want to reconsider. We can't tell anything from them, other than they're arguably better than what the Wii managed at the time.

Psychotext said:

Seeing WiiPlay drop from 9 to 30 in its second week, its probably safe to say "Kinects launch software charts better than Wii´s launch software".
Its harder to be more specific, as Wii´s launch weeks were pretty far into december, thus the individual numbers are probably higher than in November.
But on the other hand, when comparing the charts we can reject statements like "this chart is not showing a phenomenon at work". Its just too early to tell.

Coming off the back of the Gamecube, surely the Wii launch is redundant?

Word of mouth was the key to the success for Nintendo.
