07 (17) WII Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
12 (04) 360 Kinect Sports (Microsoft)
26 (13) 360 Motion Sports (Ubisoft)

Appears like Nintendo could repel Sony's and MS' first motion control offense.

Not that hard with an install base that is 10 times bigger.

Sports Resort and Just Dance are both over one year old, with the latter being the predecessor of a current Top 10 game. I'm sure this is by no means "easy" either.

Indeed :lol

It's also worth noting that WSR is almost certainly bouncing back up because of the bundle, so it's selling to the same people Sony and Microsoft are after, not just to the existing Wii userbase.

PS3 is behind 360 is all of the multiplat titles this week, 360 sales must be strong. Well GT5 week has finally come and there is not a single advert in sight at least here in the UK. It's still going to be number 1 next week however not exactly "OMG" numbers, if past GT games are anything to go by though their first weeks are good and then it has big legs. Remains to be seen if it can replicate what Forza 3 did last year, the install base and general sales in the UK tell me no. :(

So did people expect all of the Kinect launch games to outsell CoD and Assassins Creed? Because that sounds like an impossible standard to measure success by. Several launch games charted in every territory in last weeks thread, despite going up against the biggest product launch in the history of gaming. Some perspective is advisable.

For existing 360 owners buying just the sensor, NFS, AC, and Blops may be a bigger priority than immediately padding their Kinect library, given that it comes with a game and several demos. Dance Central certainly has its work cut out for it to approach the success of Just Dance.

We can keep an overview:

Red Steel - 19 - out - 34 - out

It's hard to know without the hardware sales, but perhaps 'Wii Fit' has set a sort of precedent in peoples minds. Like many have said, it's a shame that Kinect is not 'game+hardware' because we lose that comparison, and in turn that sort of hurts the impression created by Kinect on the charts.

Nice one Hammer24. That saves some weekly effort! :D

On a related note, a real shame to see Kinectimals gone when Motion Sports and Fitness Evolved are still in there.

Nice one - although it's worth noting that Wii Play isn't "free with controller", it was a pack-in title with the Remote available for a higher RRP than the Remote alone. The more interesting point with that particular title was - IIRC - its resurgence and long legs in 2007, which aren't reflected here.

Not in the UK at launch time it wasn't... simply because you couldn't buy a controller without Wii Play at the time. Though "bundled with controller" is probably fairer as you couldn't buy it standalone at the time either.

Well, that's not entirely true - I don't recall having issues getting extra Remotes initially, but post-Christmas and into early 2007 they vanished and Wii Play became about the only way to get a Remote for a while (which I would expect largely explains its resurgence). I don't recall any retailers selling the Wii Play pack for anything like the standalone price, though - I had to try and track one down in mid-2007 for my stepdaughter, and she paid over the list price of the Wii Remote for it.

Maybe it was different around the country then. I certainly couldn't get one without it, which really annoyed me because I needed four controllers... and ended up with 2 spare copies of a rather shitty game. >:(

Wii Play kept popping into the top 5 every time new stock arrived.
It's a bit pointless to compare Wii and Kinect launches as they may both be stock constrained, Wii certainly was.
If you compared it with Wii Fit would be a lot less favourable (Top, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd) But hey, that might be the case for Kinect Adventures for all we know.

Not that I think this is a particularly meaningful comparison, but you should at least compare All Formats chart with All Formats chart...

You are right of course, I´ll change it.

and maybe add Move to the mix.

The only exclusive I´m aware of is Sports Champion, will add. (Please point me to more, if there are).

If GT5 doesnt enter at number 1 next week then Sony deserve to be strung up by there manly bits.

The marketing has been an absolute shambles.

I'd keep that doubt for the US market (GT5 in a single week won't beat a full month of COD in the next NPD numbers, just to make an example), GT5 seems like the game to get this holyday season in Europe. But we'll see how it performs ;)

Move gave a small "shoulder" to the PS3 at the same time as the Halo spike but two weeks later FIFA11 released and then :lol :lol :lol . The 360 also had a small tummy.

This is maybe the most British post I've read on GAF. Not criticizing or praising, just noting.

Goldeneye dropped from 18 to 23... 5 spots. There were 4 releases this week. Not too shabby. I hope it keeps on chugging.

Also Sonic Colors made it in to the top 40 after no appearance last week.

You should take a look at last week's thread where we discuss the opening week of the Wii and how its software did (worse than Kinect's, at least in terms of number of titles / positions). The simple fact is that Kinect comes with a game, and that game isn't tracked in the UK charts so it's utterly impossible to tell how the hardware is doing.

I don't think there is anyway to compare the launch of Wii, Move , and Kinect. How do you compare a console launch to the launch of an add-on? The attachments are cheaper and have an advantage of having an existing install base to sell to. Wouldn't it be better to compare Move and Kinect to Wii Fit or WSR since those are the Wii's main attachment launches.

Maybe that is not even possible because Move and Kinect is counted as hardware and Wii Fit/WSR is counted as software. Oh well carry on.

Yeah, I agree. I know MS labeled the Kinect launch as a "platform launch" for the sake of their hype and the general perception, but it's still just a peripheral that aims at both an existing userbase and a so far untapped market.
That and the difference in price, the Wii (and apparently Kinect?) shortages and the way Nintendo has changed the perception and acceptance of motion controlled gaming over the past four years make these comparisons rather difficult to say the least.

Wiimote shortages (and Wii Play shortages) were severe in the UK after launch - when shipments came in it shot back up in the charts. Wiis themselves were also in short supply after the initial 10 day period of restocks and didn't even sit on the shelves - you phoned the reserve list and the machine went out! This year the Red Wii is going to be a must have, but I don't think it's the same crowd as in past years. There's nothing huge to grab the headlines, but it'll sell well on price and catalogue alone.

Kinect isn't quite that bad but I think it will be in id Dec - Wii launched inside the UK's traditional Christmas window - November in a recession just isn't the same. Once December hits and the proper adverts & word of mouth kick in it'll be this years must have gaming accessory.

PS3 is going to get a much bigger boost from GT than from Move I think. This is the one everyone's been waiting for and I know several PS2 owners that have been holding out just for this moment. We've had a copy in the house and it looks great, but I'm not a shiny car kind of guy.

It's going to be hard to judge just from chart positions, but it'll be fun to watch. I don't care who 'wins' because retail are going to have another record christmas in the UK. Can't wait for the Jan sales! :D

Psychotext said:
It's annoying that their individual formats stuff doesn't go back that far. =/

But yeah, going on Wii exclusives.

12 (05) - Twilight Princess
30 (09) - Wii Play (Free with controller)

vs 1st week of:

05: Twilight Princess
09: Wii Play (Free with controller)
19: Red Steel
30: Raving Rabbids

So yeah, basically anyone trying to maintain that Kinect's software positions indicate some hardware sales failure... you might want to reconsider. We can't tell anything from them, other than they're arguably better than what the Wii managed at the time.

so people were able to find Wiis in the 2nd week in UK but not in France? interesting...

Wow everything fucking poor expect Call of Duty and Just Dance and soccer games.

UK is design for soccer mom and their children, and finally call of duty groupies who hate sports.

huh? who needs local knowledge...

edit: also, no adverts for gt5 in the uk. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't enter the top ten. Not many outside a few thousand people who trawl the gaming sites know about it coming this week. Having said that, this is GT5, things could change pretty fast. And ps3 gamers are definitely down this week. Both Assasins creed and need for speed I would have thought was a ps3 mainly audience.
