PAL Charts - Week 52, 2013

Looks like the grinch stole Nintendo's christmas. Barely any presence for their machines in the chart. I am actually shocked by that. Not even being sarcastic either.

I'd be surprised if the PS3 was doing badly, especially with all the £99 deals that were cropping up over the past week or so...

Then again, PS3 software sales don't seem all that great....

I think some of the PS3 multi plats are selling lower than usual because people are getting them on the PS4 instead. I expected it to happen around the time Destiny and Watchdogs released not straight away.

I've seen a fair few good deals for PS3's around and the PS4 itself is obviously doing really well. I'm not sure about the software aspect. Game prices are definitely too high. In my case ACIV is the only game I've bought since launch for PS4 and even then I got that via the Christmas sale on PS3 and then upgraded.

Actually, despite Nintendo titles selling undeniably well in general, they lost the biggest amount of software sales by far, due to Touch Generation's disappearance. Much, much, much more than anyone (third parties should currently be slightly higher compared to DS at the same time after the console's release in Japan).

Obviously, eShop only titles not counted is a factor as well (and that's something we'll have to remember for every console from now on, of course).
That's true, I was comparing traditional software. But they enhanced their online incomes on the other side, but it's not as big yet. The eShop could reach 230.000.000 $ this fiscal year.

I refuse to buy any PS4 games till the prices come down from such ridiculous heights. £49.00 for KZ or BF4? They must think were suckers. Not one single price drop since launch, and once you compare them to US prices then the true insult begins to show.
I'm sure PS4 games would be a lot higher if they were cheaper.

True that. My last two purchases (KZ & Lego Marvel) were from Amazon US digital store as I refuse to pay £50 for a game.

FIFA 14 lost some steam due to GTA5 taking so much money out of the market, but is back again since football is, well the worlds most popular sport and in particular massive in the UK where the season this year looks to be one of the most exciting ones in a very long time. While CoD has declined and will see further decline in the next few years.

I suppose that is the advantage of making a annual sports game compared to annual FPS game.

CoD will continue to decline in UK and US, while FIFA will stay strong

The 360 software sales show just how screwed Nintendo are. 360/PS3's can be picked up so cheap that the PS4/XB1 really is just a part the problem for the Wii U.

People are way more likely to pick up the 360/PS3 than a Wii U.

Well unless people start hating football for some reason, FIFA was always be popular. CoD may end up being replaced by another series or it could remain, but it's not guaranteed the constant presence FIFA does.

Helps that this is one of the best and most enjoyable seasons in years. Even if the Toon lost yesterday :(

Yep, I would buy at least 2 or 3 games for the ps4 if the price wasn't so damn high ( BF4, COD and fifa)

Ridiculous, i wonder how much sales they are losing because of it.

Soon...

Week 52

01. FIFA 14 (-31%) - 119,157
02. Call of Duty: Ghosts (-24%) - 118,326 ("Activision’s 'Call of Duty: Ghosts' remains at No2 (-24%) but is less than 2000 units behind ‘FIFA 14’"), so the estimate is almost completely right)
03. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (-15%) - 100,283
04. Battlefield 4 (-11%) - 85,848
05. Grand Theft Auto V (-5%)
06. Need for Speed: Rivals
07. Lego Marvel Super Heroes
08. Just Dance 2014
09. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
10. Gran Turismo 6

I thought (read on gaf) that the british retail always lowers the prices compared to the MSRP/RRP on it's own?

Come on, games have been 70€ for years in other European countries. Sounds like next gen is just raising UK prices up to where they're supposed to be. £50 is still much cheaper than what other Europeans have paid for PS3/360 games for years.

And don't compare that to US prices, you have to pay VAT, which is not included in the $60 US price.

I don't think the crazy super sales will happen though. Last year Nintendo simply purchased all the unsold WiiU's back from the retailers and reported it as a negative sale in their quarterly report. Allowing ridiculous sales to happen may damage the WiiU brand.
It's not up to Nintendo to allow or disallow. They can't control the prices of the product retailers set, and go out of their way to not mention a recommended retail price when products launch due to the price fixing scandal a while back.

Also: to echo everyone else...damage the Wii U brand? The damage has been done already, it's beyond repair (in the UK, at the very least).

Really interested to see where the 360 crowd will go. MS will be plastering Xbox One and TitanFall all over the 360 soon i suppose.

I kind of wish GT6 would do well overall. I know the franchise is in decline but it is a massive leap over 5 from a UI and content perspective and it is a very polished title. The PS3 is limiting what they can do and I still think it is a nice game.

edit: I don't know why we're talking about "PS3 crowds" or "360 crowds" like their migration patterns are obvious. The 360 sold more software. Declines in both user groups would be more evident in the PS3's numbers since it was a smaller base (i.e. the PS4 outsells the PS3 in absolute terms at a much lower threshold).

I think it's part wishful thinking that there is this massive audience just waiting to migrate. The challenge the industry is facing is that there is a very real threat of contraction.

That UK list is incredibly depressing.

What horrible taste most people here have in gaming.

Why do people say this in every thread? Tastes are almost consistent across the entire western hemisphere.

I think is doing ok,its been steady.

I can't help but shake the feeling they'll go the same way the Wii crowd did. As in leave console gaming altogether/move to tablets/phone gaming.

Yeah, absolutely agree with this. I feel this time next year the UK gaming market (specifically on consoles and handhelds to a lesser extent) will be smaller than it is now.

Worrying times ahead...

I think it's pretty much given considering how big flop WiiU is compared to Wii. Pretty unrealistic for PS4 and Xbone to pick up that 100 million audience.

I don't believe anyone expects them to pick up the Wii install base, the worry is them haemorrhaging their own user-bases.

After all, there's no real compelling reason to upgrade this generation as there was in previous ones, at least not yet. VR might be the key to making sure current audiences don't abandon the market/see the user-base grow.

I agree. Plus there was such a prolonged period between launches who knows if those who bought ps3 or xb360 at launch even play games anymore. Plus someone who is 15 now was only 8 at xb360 launch, hard to say if they even cared about console games then. Lots of variables involved, and I'm not sure how much migration there really happens from gen to gen.

Why are people saying the PS crowd is moving on and not just that the ps4 is more popular than xone in UK. Funny too when you consider that the claim has been that MS is supplying more stock to the US and UK because ps4 is never on shelves and xone is and yet the past few weeks in the UK have shown that ps4 is indeed outselling the xone. Spain showed the same no ps4s on shelves but still outselling the xone.
360 > PS3
PS4 > XB1

That's really are there is to it. Both 360/PS3 sales are lower than last year. Lucky for Sony most people moved on to PS4 instead of Xbox One.

CoD itself is like a sport. I'm sure it'll decline a bit next year and maybe even the next but I doubt it will ever go away. I see it being the best selling FPS for quite some time.

whats a "real" reason? Only downside to PS4/XB1 is €400 and low availability (PS4)... otherwise, everyone would want to upgrade.

VR will always be niche.

Something that can't be done on current tech? Last gen it was HD and online gaming, there's no such reason this generation.

VR could be that reason to upgrade. Especially with Google Glass just around the corner...

So FIFA remaining strong all other falling. I wish we can get %age for each console too. How much they sold on XBO & PS4

I really think at this time EA can practically release any game they want called Fifa and it will still sell boatloads. Quality does not matter when it comes to Fifa.

Isn't the game down YoY compared to last year? Or did next gen releases change that?

The GTAV numbers are insane: we have 3.7 million units in the UK (end of Dec.), 0.6 million units in Japan (end of Dec.), and >7 million units in the US (end of Nov.). That's >11.3 million units not counting the month of Dec. in the US and the rest of the world.

Those launch multi drop offs weren't as bad now you look at the results in the end. FIFA managed to outsell is previous entries. AC isn't far off the last but better than Revelations. BF isn't a huge difference away. CoD is the biggest loser by a big margin.

Plus this doesn't include digital sales. Given that there is very little price difference between digital and retail on the new consoles I suspect the sales though this medium are greater than ever.

I don't know, but I remember FIFA 14 was significantly down in the first week. People said this was because of GTA and the upcoming next gen versions. They were probably right. Or Mpl90 failed and people bought 3DS FIFAs in masses.

Nono, it's probably due to FIFA being in One main day one SKU, as well as the brand new bundle now. FIFA 14 on 3DS has nothing to do with this. :lol

i was thinking that BF might eat into some of the CoD sales.. But so far it does not look like this..

Secondly where the Shooter crowd is going to move game wise.? I think CoD is going to remain strong on this gen too..

Overall UK revenues (only software) increased due to growing digital sales:

ERA usually uses Chart-Track data, the digital number should be estimated though.

We should probably get a better report about the gaming market from mcvuk in the next few days, including hardware, accessories and so on.
