RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - He's been a prostitute's rich beau, an officer, a gentleman and a gigolo, but Palestinians can't fathom actor Richard Gere (news)'s latest incarnation as a cheerleader for their elections this weekend.

Well known for his vocal support of Tibet's Dalai Lama and celebrated for his captivating good looks, Gere urged Palestinians in a television commercial broadcast ahead of Sunday's poll in the West Bank and Gaza to get out to vote for a new president to succeed Yasser Arafat, who died in November.

"Hi, I'm Richard Gere and I'm speaking for the entire world. We're with you during this election time. It's really important. Get out and vote," Gere says in the English-language advertisement. He repeats the phrase, "Get out and vote" in Arabic.

But many voters, already struggling with the labyrinthine politics of the West Bank and Gaza, say they have never heard of the actor who swept Debra Winger off her feet as a dashing Navy officer in the 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman" and were even less interested when they were told he's an American.

"I don't even know who the candidates are other than Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas), let alone this Gere," Gaza soap factory worker Manar an-Najar told Reuters Wednesday.

"We don't need the Americans' intervention. We know who to elect. Not like them -- they elected a moron."

I am glad I am not the only one who is sick of Americans acting like the only country that has elections.

The Palestinians have the right idea in this matter. I never understood why here in America people entertain the notion that lackwits like Barbra Streisand (who didn't graduate high school) and the Baldwins are political pundits whose expert opinion should be seriously considered.

Reminds me of the British letter writing campaign for the 2004 Presidential election. Way back when.

what ?! you mad? only americans do things like this! that never happened!

actually . that was worse. this little campaign is not trying to promote a certain candidate , instead, they are just trying to entice everyone to vote.

of course, america is evil/arrogant.yada yada yada

who wants to bet there a laser sight homing in on Gere's brain as we sit here. Yeah Richard thats what the extremists want, a hollywood actor from the "Great Satan" telling muslim people what they should do. Even American's don't want these people opening their mouths

I don't think there's anything wrong with inticing people from other countries to vote, or even influencing that vote in todays society of globalism where a vote in another country does effect you.

But I think this is perhaps the dumbest way to go about it ever. Let's have an individual that to the outside World represents (to these people, not neccessarilly accuratly) both the culture and elite of America, tell the most Anti-American people in the World to go out and vote! Genius!

Hollywood actors really need to stick to press junkets and maybe charity events when they venture out of the U.S.

I'm pretty sure Islam is against sticking gerbils up your ass, so that leaves nobody for Richard Gere to endorse.

OMG! :lol That's the funniest thing I've ever heard!!! :lol :lol :lol

See, he's referring to President Bush there. He's calling President Bush a moron! Can you believe it? A moron!!! Because, y'know, he mixes up his words and says odd things sometimes. And because, well, they don't like him or his international policies, and they don't like the United States (aka "the Great Satan"!) either, and they don't want us getting involved in their affairs. So they're telling us to mind our own business, because we've got no business commenting on other countries' elections, because we elected a moron, that moron being Bush.

Isn't that just the funniest thing EVER?!? :lol :lol :lol

It's really quite clever, when you think about it. And bold! ...Really. :D

And completely original, too! I don't believe I've ever heard that one before. :)

Richard Gere should STFU, though.

We should STFU about their election and they should STFU about our election.

And Gere should STFU about anything political and shove another gerbil up his ass to get past his boredom.

yes because the Palestinians are known for their great leaders. =\

Gere is an ass hat who only needs to open his mouth to be owned. Besides everyone knows Bono speaks for the world.
