Pandora is bringing on-demand song choice to its streaming radio service — for a premium.

The new on-demand service Pandora Premium, which costs $9.99 monthly, lets subscribers choose and play any song or album and use new playlist creation features. Currently, Pandora's Internet radio can be listened to free with advertisements, but you cannot choose a specific song, only artists or a type of music. Listeners can give songs a thumbs up to hear more songs similar to that or thumbs down to not hear that track again on that station.

Pandora will send out invitations to current select users on Wednesday, with options for all users to upgrade in coming weeks.

Pandora hopes this new tier of service helps strengthen its position in the competitive music streaming market. It already reigns as the top music service in terms of overall listening, earning 28% of all streaming music hours in 2016, according to research firm MusicWatch. YouTube (including YouTube Red subscriptions), was second at 27% and Spotify came in third (17%).

However, Spotify has the most paying subscribers, 43 million of the 100.4 million worldwide, according to tech analysis firm MIDiA, with Apple Music second at 20.9 million. (Note: Spotify hit 50 million subscribers earlier this month.)

Pandora Plus ($4.99 monthly) lets you listen without ads, skip more songs and download music for offline listening.

Pandora Premium matches Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Red, each of which cost $9.99 monthly.

Seems too little too late, but best of luck to them. Spotify (and to a lesser extent Apple) seem to have eaten up all of that market. Pandora seems to be known as "the free one" so it might be hard to get their userbase to pony up some cash every month.

Pandora's algos and backing data are really something. If they can get a foot in I think they'll knock it out of the park.

Problem is getting that foot in. Good luck.

Pandora rolled out a completely new web interface today, so this must be in conjunction with that.

I like Pandora's service for finding new music or artists, but then I go to Spotify to listen to the entire album and follow the artist. They can sorta work well in conjunction with one another, but I'm sure there's a good way to do it all on Spotify itself.

Yeah, in general it does a good job of introducing me to music that I like but don't know about. Except for that day a month ago when the service glitched and was playing completely random stuff. That was nuts.

I pay for pandora and Spotify

I'm always afraid I'll accidentally call it RedTube in real life.

It really is. If their music recommendations were as good as Spotify, I'd probably switch back. The blown up album art in the Play Music app would still bother me, though.

Yeah, Discover on Spotify is really great. I still use it sometimes and just save the albums on Google Music, but it's not as good if you don't use Spotify to listen to everything.

It is a combined package of YouTube/Google Music/YT Music (youtube music). 3 different apps on my phone for it.

Another pleasant perk with it is the family plan: $15 a month for 6 users. Even just splitting that three ways is a nice deal.

Edit: As a former Pandora subscriber, it does make me a little sad to see how quickly this thread turned into extolling a different service... but I have to agree.

YouTube Red actually sounds awesome. I didn't know you got the badass music apps too. And it completely eliminates YouTube ads on top of that?

Yes, ad free Youtube videos even on mobile devices. And Google Play is a pretty good streaming app. Pretty sure they have a free trial if you want to give it a shot.

I am currently using the Spotify family plan which I love, but to get music features alongside those YouTube features is super rad. Can you download songs to your device as well like Spotify? Cause I love that.

I've been waiting for this day for months. The only music service I can get at work is Pandora and I'm real tired of their small music selection. So after being super excited, I learn that they don't have a web app yet....ffs. Their algorithms are pretty awesome but I tend to just hear the same songs over and over again since they only have 4 million songs.

My go to is still Google Music when I'm not at work though.

Yeah, you can download songs. What I use all the time is downloading radio stations. It will grab like 2 hours worth of music and then when you get back onto WiFi, it will refresh the list with new music. So you just keep getting new stuff with no effort.

Yep. Songs, albums, stations, etc. can be downloaded for offline play.

Music streaming is a really competitive market. I would be surprised if people weren't comparing different services coming into a thread like this.

Personally I switch between spotify and google music every few months. Maybe a month of apple music to be different. It helps when I can get promotions as well. I got 4 months of google play music at the beginning of the year free through a promotion..

Might give it a shot, music streaming lost its luster for me when I bought my latest car that doesn't have Aux In or Bluetooth capabilities. I'm not 16 anymore so I don't feel like getting an aftermarket stereo system, so now I just listen to burnt CDs. Feels like the 90s again.

Anyways, Pandora has always done the absolute best at picking the music I like and will like, so I love it for finding new stuff, and reminding me of awesome old stuff I used to listen to.

I personally like Pandora's radio service the best (much better at making cohesive styles on each station and good at figuring out songs I like) but the YouTube Red / GPM combo is better. And I like Spotify 's app the best. But I watch more YouTube than I listen to streaming music (listen to a lot of NPR on my drive).

Plus the family plan means the kids' accounts don't have ads on YouTube along with mine.

If only I could use GPM with our Amazon Echos...Sigh.
Prime music means I have to switch to the wife's account and it doesn't have as much as the others.

Feel like 16 again and enjoy your digital music or feel like an adult and deal with burned CDs. Lol what?

I already got Pandora and Spotify, since Spotify's radio is garbage, so I might as well give a whirl for a few weeks.

I don't think this'll save Pandora though, especially with the juggernauts of Apple and Spotify already cornering the market along with a bunch of others such as Amazon.

Does Pandora have Left Sensory Bypass (and other bands Spotify doesn't have)? Because if not, no interest.

Just heard about this. I doubt they expect to take down Spotify or Apple, but rather are smartly trying to convert their ~80 million users instead of ignoring the money

That said, I wonder how long these small players in streaming can last without gaining big traction. Amazon Prime Music, iHeart Radio Premium, etc

I remember when Pandora was a cool website made by some college I think. Never thought it'd become this gigantic business.

With that said, the ads on free Pandora are insanely annoying. I already use Spotify so 1) I won't be signing up for their service, and 2) I will continue to not use their free version.

I'm sure some people will sign up for this, so from their perspective might as well.

I'll try it out. I still love Pandora and after using it for so many years it seems to know my musical preferences very well.

I've used Pandora for over a decade and want to convince myself to subscribe to this, but I can't. I probably listen to the least streaming music of anyone on our Spotify family plan, which we've had for a few years, and it's just not feasible to switch everyone over (especially without a Pandora family option). :/

I really do wonder what's going to happen to all these music streaming websites over the next decade, they don't seem to be making any money. I don't think I could go back to buying albums individually

Just get one of these. They are pretty cheap and do the trick. https://www.amazon.com/MP3-Player-Bluetooth-FM-Transmitters/b?ie=UTF8&node=9926001011

Wanted to check this out, but it seems like you need an invite to get the free trial? And the only way to subscribe at the moment is through the mobile app, where it's $12.99 per month. Guess it's a pass for now. :(

Did they lower the skips you get. I feel like I used to have 5-6 and now it's like 3.

I'm thinking about subscribing to this. I've considered giving Spotify a try but ive been using Pandora for years and don't want to lose my stations.

Annoying - I can't seem to sign up for a free trial because I'm a Pandora Plus subscriber. I cancelled my subscription through iTunes and it still won't let me sign up. Only option is to pay $13 per month through iTunes. I can't even just pay the $10 per month through the website. :(
