Parents accuse dentist of giving 3-year-old daughter brain damage

(CNN) -- The parents of a 3-year-old in a "vegetative state" are suing a Kailua, Hawaii, dentist, alleging negligence and dangerous conduct that left the girl with massive, irreversible brain damage.

The lawsuit filed against Lilly Geyer and her practice, Island Dentistry for Children, alleges improper medications with incorrect dosages were administered to Finley Boyle on December 3, 2013, according to court documents filed this week.

"As a direct and proximate result of the medications administered to (Finley) by defendants, (Finley) suffered cardiac arrest during her dental procedure," the lawsuit said.

It also alleges that as a further result of administering improper medications, Finley "suffered severe and permanent brain damage."

Geyer and Geyer's attorney, John Nishimoto, did not respond to repeated requests by CNN for comment. The Island Dentistry website states it has been permanently closed and directs patients to an e-mail address.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Hawaii's First Circuit Court, also alleges Geyer did not have a plan or procedures in place to respond to medical emergencies, such as the one Finley suffered. It seeks unspecified damages.

Finley's mother, Ashley Boyle, said she first took her daughter to the dentist in November, when she was told her daughter needed six fillings and four root canals, she said.

They returned to the dentist in December to undergo the root canals, Boyle said.

The parents allege that Finley was sedated and left unmonitored for 26 minutes.

Seriously. Obviously what ended up happening is horrible and the main point deserving attention, but just as a separate curiousity, how does the above even happen?

6 fillings and 4 root canals at age 3?

Holy shit what.... I'd take my child for a second opinion. Or do dentists routinely lie about procedures their patients need to make some extra money?

Or is there a legitimate reason for why a 3 year old would need all that?

Second opinions seem like a good idea from my experience. When my wisdom teeth were coming in one guy we went to recommended that I get 8 teeth removed and have $2000 implants.

Went to another and ended up just getting the 4 wisdom teeth out. I've been fine since then.

All of that for a 3 year old sounds like the dentist was lying to the parents about what she actually needed.

I'm calling shenanigans on a 3 year old needing 6 fillings and multiple root canals. They still have their baby teeth ffs, why would you go through all that dental work for teeth that will fall out in a few years?

What a scam artist.

They must've had that baby translator from The Simpsons.

"I only want to eat candy!"
"Then candy is all you'll have!"

I permanently banned my 6 year old daughter from using the PS4 for mistakenly sending grief reports as it's too hard to watch or talk to her
Root canals at 3!

Holy Fuck was that dentist trying it on.

If the parents fed the kid tons of sugary crap and failed miserably at keeping the teeth clean, Its possible. Cavities and rotting teeth are bad news at any age.

Sounds like aspen dental. There are scam dentists everywhere and no punishment. This shit should be illegal with jail time. My mother in law (and her husband) just got scammed by a place and they both got major dental work. The place said they weren't covered by insurance even though they later found out insurance would have covered it if it was needed. They are still trying to get their money back.

Nah, it happens. My wife's family has really bad teeth. It's like they were born without enamel. If my niece *looks* at a cupcake she gets a cavity. It's really a shame because she eats really well and brushes three times a day but nope, cavities and root canals.

When my teeth were rotting at 4 years oldish cause my parents were letting me drink too much coke, they just pulled my 4 front teeth and capped 2 of my molars.

My 3 yeah old has something like 24 teeth.

Almost half of this girls teeth have cavities? Does she brush? What are her parents feeding her?

more money than God
Kids can stand to lose their baby teeth early for the most part. Depends on just how many it was though.
That's a preferential thing, though. Especially, if they're already infected. Root canals, I believe, aren't just about saving teeth, but also for preventing a spread of infection.

Lots of shady businesses in Hawaii due to lack of competition and the state's remoteness. Great place to visit, sketchy place to live.

My kid eats nothing but sugary foods and never brushes his teeth. He had 1 cavity at age 5 and that was it. I can't imagine what the child is eating at age 3 that could cause this.

wtf

stop feeding your child nothing but sugary foods

a cavity at such a young age is as much to blame on bad parenting

Are you making shit up or do you know this for a fact?

Wife got her wisdom teeth out when we lived in Hawaii, got dry socket and generally had a horrible recovery. We did not have a great experience with Hawaiian medicine in general. The "Aloha spirit" is a fucked up thing when it comes to things that matter. Would not recommend.

Yup, my mom lives out there and I fear for her medical safety. She has very few options for doctors and hospitals.

6 fillings and 4 root canals just furthers my opinion that a lot dentists are full of shit and order procedures that are completely unnecessary. I have had far too many incidents where I've gone for a second or third opinion and had every dentist tell me something completely different.

Don't just throw that out there without some kind of examples. I lived in Hawaii my whole life, tell me about all these shady businesses. I know the electric company is monopoly over here but what else?

My dentist once joked that she was glad for Halloween because all that candy eating helps her business lol.

I only get my teeth cleaned as my hygiene is awesome, so I guess I'm a bad patient lol, similar to how CC companies hate people who pay on time.

Sounds like your mind's made up even without this story.

They are gonna fall out anyways? WRONG

The primary teeth will get abscesses and cause pain. I have seen many 3 yo with cavities. There is a lot of neglect out there. The real question is that if all the work needed to be done completely. Maybe do half the mouth first? My condolences to the family.

GAFhas too many kids with sensational responses.

Did your wife smoke during the recovery? Did she rinse with warm salt water? Horrible recovery shouldn't be blamed at anyone.

Three times a day? If she brushes shortly after eating, it might wear down the enamel.

They are called baby root canals, pulpotomies. It is believable. Common for kids. They are done so that the permanent tooth can erupt at the right time. I am trying to spread proper education on this.

Scam artist? At age 3, they would lose the primary 1st molar at age 10-11. So roughly 7 years later. Infection will set in if untreated.
