I was told that I should only brush twice a day. Too much brushing ruins enamel. The people who say brush after every meal are the ones with some of the worst teeth.

Sometimes adults brush too hard causing abrasions which is the enamel wear. That is what they are telling you. You are reading this like they are telling you not to brush.

They are called baby root canals, pulpotomies. It is believable. Common for kids. They are done so that the permanent tooth can erupt at the right time. I am trying to spread proper education on this.

Is this to prevent stuff like shark teeth and such? I could get it, then. Common? I really can't imagine there would be a need.

Yup. If you drink soda, wait an hour to brush. Your spit will counter the lowered PH, and you won't brush weakened enamel.

Here are the examples. People who think that kids that young can't get cavities must live in some nice areas. There are many places people are underserved.

So the first pic, you want to wait a few years for them to fall out? What about infection? Your kid is crying in pain. You say you brush their teeth 2 times a day?

6 fillings and 4 root canals just furthers my opinion that a lot dentists are full of shit and order procedures that are completely unnecessary. I have had far too many incidents where I've gone for a second or third opinion and had every dentist tell me something completely different.

When I worked at a dental office, we saw multiple kids between 4-10 years old with that many cavities. If you let your child drink pop and eat candy non-stop, they're going to get cavities; especially at that age, when proper brushing techniques are often overlooked. We saw kids with so much plague on their teeth that a hygienist couldn't perform a regular cleaning.

I talked to a mother who basically said she didn't think it was a big deal since the teeth were baby teeth and "were going to fall out anyway." Well, if your kid has horrible oral hygiene with baby teeth, they're probably going to have horrible oral hygiene with their adult teeth unless changes are made.

It should be considered child abuse IMO.

Propaganda? I am here to educate you. My condolescences to the family. I am defending the profession.

incorrect dosages huh

fun story

in my freshman year in the bio 1500 class (the intro bio for science majors) we had to measure the blood sugar of some mice and you have to knock them out first

its fairly simple but dont worry 4 kids in one group all fucked theirs up and added an extra zero and killed their mice the only ones to do that in like 3 years our ta said

theyre all in med school and will be doctors in less than 2 years from now

Here is another case. Four anterior teeth with cavities. If there is no signs of abscess, these 4 teeth would be capped. If you waited for these teeth to "fall out" there would be abscesses that would develop.

I too, fear English smiles.

That is such a wrong way to present a hyperbole into the situation, with what seems like scare propaganda to boot, for no reason.

Bye thread.

Propaganda? That's what happens when a kid drinks Mountain Dew every day, without brushing. This isn't some game, it's a major issue.

Obamacare has more than a few faults, but it's perhaps the largest increase in dental coverage for children in US history. Preventive care from an early age is a great way to increase overall health.

Right as I was starting to get over my fear of dentists this thread has to come along. Fuck. If I ever get another cavity I think I'll just deal with the pain.

My condolences to the family.

Extremely true. Dental health is completely underrated when it comes to overall health. However, randomly throwing out pictures of teeth in horrible shape, first with no explanation at all, then what I saw as an hyperbolic tangent, seemed so irrelevant to the thread that I choose to step aside.

Dosage error is the problem. No one is going to post on here and tell me that kids do not get cavities at that young of an age.

If you do not believe the diagnosis, getting a second opinion would be good.

All those pictures I posted are mouths of kids.

Do NOT google what meth mouth looks like.

That's a horrible idea considering cavities only get bigger if they aren't addressed. So instead of dealing with/paying for a small cavity, you could end up dealing with an extraction, or a root canal, or a crown - far more expensive. And sooner or later you won't be able to deal with the pain. Trust me.

I think people are just incredulous that a parent would let their kid's teeth get to that state.

I had shitty parents who worshipped coke. Dunno what this woman's deal was.

This is true. The amount of people that don't know basic oral hygiene is astonishing. But at the same time some of the things dentists recommend are stupid and overkill. I have perfectly fine teeth (thankfully) which I brush everyday and floss irregularly. About 10 years ago I went to a dentist to get some teeth cleaning done because my college covered the insurance cost. The dentist cleaned my teeth and mentioned some deformity/cavity (forgot what was the problem) in my right and left molars. Her suggestion was to get rid of them and that they will pull out the molars and plug in some fake ones that were $150-$200 each. I said fuck that and never went back.

Edit: Just remembered, the lady I'm not sure was actually a dentist or an apprentice of some sort. She fucked up cleaning my teeth and my mouth was all bloody when she ended. She said it was normal.

Good on hanzo for spreading proper education. I honestly can't believe people were against the procedures because, "she was going to lose them anyway." Are you kidding? You can be against it, but have a real reason. I can't stand arm chair health professionals.

you said it yourself that you've barely ever flossed

Of course it's normal for your mouth to become bloody because if you haven't flossed in a long time -- your gums are going to bleed when a hygienist goes to work on your mouth

if you don't want them to bleed then floss every day

I went to the dentist about every 4 months, I go in one day ask about a cavity on my molar, they tell me nah you're good. I come back 4 months later, LOL U HAVE 13 CAVITIES 2 ON THAT MOLAR AND NEED 2 CROWNS LOL BUT UR BRUSHING GOOD WE KNOW THAT

Needless to say I'm skeptical about dentists, but it's also pretty possible :/ drank way too much soda when I was younger.

That could be due to you having gingivitis or periodontal disease. Or it could indeed be her poking too much. We tried out one hygienist whose tray always looked like she had extracted a fucking tooth after she cleaned someone's mouth. I'd hate to be in the seat for that.

I had a cavity once when I was younger that was never taken care of. My parents didn't have any dental coverage from their jobs and didn't want to pay to get it looked at. I managed to deal with it, although I am now missing a tooth as it eventually crumbled away.
