PC gaming to totally rule E3 this yr?

It's a subject often overlooked thanx to console wars. I don't know man, but I just read a preview of the new project by Will Wright and let me tell you guys something, if this game delivers 20 percent of what its promising it will OWN this show AND this generation. Add to that civ 4, AOE 3, ROL, the usual FPSes.... and whewwwwi, PC gaming heaven. :)

One original game, then sequel, sequel, sequel and "the usual FPSes"? Yeah, that's ruling. :lol It'll be ignored by non-hardcore fans like every other year.

That one original game is more than anything wev heard commin on the console side of things. What is there on the other end besides Halo, FF, PD0, MGS....? 90 percent sequels. If it gets ignored that is simply an indication of the fact that console gamers dont have the money to do serious pc gaming.

Don't kid yourself.

This may be the best E3 ever for PC gaming, but this E3 is also going to be kicking off the next generation of console gaming and console gaming is where its at, whether you like it or not.

Spore does stand a good chance at winning Best of Show on account of it being highly original and creative. Not to mention Will Wright is behind the project.

However, I don't think the PC platform as a whole is going to dominate the event. Rise of Legends, being my most anticipated game personally, isn't going to do much for people outside the hardcore RTS fans. AoE 3 is awfully pretty though and might garner a fair amount of attention.

Personally, I think the show will belong to Xbox 360 - just because it's new hardware that is coming out fairly soon. That's what people will be the most excited for.

no one said console gaming isn't where its at. But it certainly isn't because of the quality of the games being superior on average than pc games. It's simply economics. PC gaming is much more expensive and your average console gamer doesn't have the funds to accomodate it.

PC never seems to dominate E3 IMO.

Huh? You're nuts. Look at the past winners from E3awards.com:

04 Best of Show
Sony PSP

03 Best of Show
Half-Life 2

02 Best of Show
DOOM III

01 Best of Show
Nintendo GAMECUBE

00 Best of Show:
Black & White

99 BEST OF SHOW
Freelancer (PC)

98 Most Promising New Game:
Homeworld (Sierra/Relic)

PC Games ALWAYS dominate E3, except perhaps when new consoles themselves win (which might well happen this year).

Yeah, Age of Empires 3 may be a sequel. Civ 4 may be a sequel. But when did Age of Empires 2 come out? Civ 3? There aren't yearly updates to PC games most of the time like there are with console games.

With XNA and Xbox 360, I expect a small boon to occur in PC gaming. I see many simultaneous Xbox 360/PC releases down the road.

Dominate =/= winning Best of Show. A look at some of the past winners ought to tell you that.

"Winning" E3 doesn't have anything to do with the finished product....
There's a lot more to "dominating" than having a single title win a Best of Show award. Taking a look at the showroom floor and press conferences, you'd see that E3 has been dominated by consoles for years.

Unison,

The PC gaming market is dwarfed by the consoles. It's as simple as that. PC can't dominate when it doesn't have as much attention being given to it by the publishers/developers.

Consoles dominate by virtue of mere numbers (a thousand mediocre games being produced for the masses). That type of domination is worthless. Quality >>>>>>>>> Quantity. The fact that out of a million console games and comparatively handful pc titles, the pc games often win best of show just goes to show where the quality and innovation really lie in the industry.

It's akin to saying GM cars dominate over Ferrari. Yes, numbers wise t hey do.... but ask anyone which they'd rather have IF they had the funding. ;p

PC games dominated in 2002 and 2003. Last year was really about the handheld systems, this year is unquestionably about the nex-gen consoles. Next year probably will be as well since Xbox 360 will be going into it's post-launch phase and showcasing new games, and Sony & Nintendo will be gearing up for their North American launches.

With 360, PS3 and Rev on the horizon, PC hardware is teh suck.

I have a Athlon 64 3500+ and a GeForce 6800 Ultra and its going to look like a pile of shit compared to the new consoles.

PC what?

PC what? LOL. The console advantage will vaporize in 2 yrs MAX. Buy a high end pc in 2 yrs time and it will SMOKE any console out, PERIOD. The difference is that w/ a console, u are stuck w/ the tech for 4-7 yrs time. W/ a pc, 6 months n u got the next generation update. :)

But consistently a PC game wins GOTS....

Despite the smaller market, and despite the slant of the press, the PC market is certainly not hurting for respect when it comes to E3. Though consoles might have more games, it doesn't mean they're more significant at defining what that E3 will be remembered for.

Well, some PC games may well make a run for best of show but the "buzz" will certainly be around the new console hardware.

Thats a fact.

By the time November rolls around.. new PC hardware will make your setup look like a steaming pile of shit, so what's your point?

Yeah but there will be another two E3's and several other trade shows over the next two years. I expect Xbox 360 to win best of show this year (I can't imagine enough being seen of PS3 to even qualify at this point), and next year whatever the hottest console game is will probably win. After Battlefield 2 comes out (which will probably have a strong showing at E3), every major PC franchise other than Starcraft will have had a sequel released from 2003 - 2005. It will be a while before all those developers are back with a new slate of products, especially given how much time some PC developers take with their games.

edit - if there is one thing that the PC will probably dominate in, it's "industry awards." AIAS has given GOTY to a FPS for four years in a row, and I doubt they're going to develop a taste for something different by next winter.

alternatively one could say with a console you dont have to replace it but twice a decade.. with a PC you have to update it once a year to keep up with the newest games. PC's are certainly more of an investment, and I think both have their advantages.. right now Im a PC gamer because I built a new rig and its bitchin' but 3 years from now I'll be back to consoles becuause Im not dropping 500 a year keeping this thing up to date.

Dude, that's when the mysterious console 'art' advantage kicks in.. don't you know anything? ;)

Well no fucking shit?

PC tech never sits still and it constantly evolves. Sure its going to surpass the new consoles eventually.

Current PC hardware is suckage compared to the new consoles at this time.

I can't help but be pretty impressed on new Xbox games running on 3 1/2 year hardware.

Developers squeeze every once out of the consoles and every year, things somehow look better.

In PC land, faster hardware is what gets thrown at the problem.

I like PC gaming. There is some types of games that are just made for it.

But it gets expensive upgrading every year to keep up.

Oh it will. I have no doubt.

Such is life in the world of PC gaming.

W/ a pc, 6 months n u got the next generation update

And at what cost?

Right, but "best of show" can go to hardware as well. If console hardware wins this year, than "consoles" dominated the show, just like handhelds did last year.

Well, usually stuff that wins Best of Show is being seen for the first time @ E3. Since Spore was seen @ E3, it might be seen as Old Hate by the jaded game jounralists. :lol

GOTS, by who?

Is there an E3 game of the show? I don't think there is.

Isn't it just the print media and internet web sites that give this shit out? And obviously it's their opinion right? So, like I said, IMO - PC never dominates E3.

This isn't a quantitative thing, it's qualitative and therefore up to interpretation, and obviously there is no way of "proving" one person is right or wrong. It's just opinion based on observation.

IMO, the PC is hurting. How many big blockbusters come out on the PC vs the consoles? It's a small ratio I am sure.

I'm calling absolute bullshit on this. You are going to probably have to wait about a year or so for PC hardware to catch up to the newly released consoles. They aren't going to match Xbox 360 come this November.

Now, if you mean November 2006, then yeah - it may be inline with the Xbox 360. I stress may

you will able to buy a PC even better then the 360 by November.....(if ATI get their act together)

bet anyone right now Unreal Engine 3 games on PC will look significantly better then on 360. :)

fact: pcs will be SEVERELY lacking in the CPU department compared to X360 for at least a year.

Did you actually read the leaked specs of the Xbox 360?

Each to their own I guess. But for half the price of a high end graphics card you can have a console.

Also, PCs may be able to 'smoke' consoles in a couple of years (may), but you won't get the benefit of the potential as developers will still be coding to 9800 pros

retailers have no helped PC gaming in the least. EB actively shoved much of the PC selection to the back/wall corner and have season by season chopped down the space given for NEW pc games.

Gamestop was a bit better about it, and Best Buy is probably the best, that ive seen.

Again, the death of PC gaming is caused in part by the knife retailers are driving into its back.

domination is simply a function of hype and big name PC games don't generate much hype compared to their console counterparts. Especially not in a console launch year.

Also I hereby propose that Doube D be renamed Douche D

I have to disagree. I think PC gaming is getting treated like this as a result of the fact that it just isn't as big of a money maker as console games. PC games selling in the millions is far less common than console games selling in the millions. Publishers and developers know where the big cash cow is, and it's usually not in PC games.

Gaming-Age ain't the place to:

a) post news about PC gaming
b) enjoy posting about PC gaming
c) look forward to new PC titles

I learned my lesson the hard way. You often hear about "PC elitists" well there are also "console elitists" that try to ruin every PC related thread (like this one).

There are lots of other forums where PC gaming is taken seriously (Rage3D, Futuremark, even Penny-Arcade Forums etc.), so I advise you Double D do not create threads like this in the future - it's NO USE.

I am interested in seeing a couple of PC games at e3, but let's be real here.. PC gaming is the same ole shit. Three genres does not make a gamer happy.

Hardware? Sure. But that won't stop the good majority of PC developers from writing code for the lowest-common-denominator. It's not just about the horsepower, it's how it's used. And thanks to console audiences having the same exact hardware, the visual curve is often much shorter on the likes of Playstations and Gamecubes and XBoxes than PCs and Macs.
