PC Racing Sims Thread

So I just a got a wheel and iracing, it's super fun so far! Do you guys have any tips in general? I am focusing on oval at the moment, which has been fun. Amazingly it looks like dirt street stocks look filled at the moment, I really need to practice with them. Any tips for a beginning oval racer? I also tried MX5 at Lime Rock Park and it was super fun aswell.

Focus on getting out of Rookie to get some cleaner races in.

Yep, and for rookie oval races that means starting from the pit unless you are qualifying in top 4. It may feel anticlimactic to start your race from the pit, but it is an easy way to bank some safety rating and get out of rookie. There are midfield pile ups on opening lap so often.

I guess I've been getting lucky and avoiding crashes. The only time so far that I have lost points was from a dirt race that I quit because I couldn't handle the thing. I've just been giving people space and it's been really fun so far. I even got third in my last race, it's been alot of fun! I hope I can get 3.0 so I can try the legends races, those look cool.

Don't race to win, drive cleanly, try to learn your limits.

Legends is unofficial so even if you can drive it, you can't gain SR nor iRating there.

But I am glad to hear that you have been having fun. The efficient way to drive dirt street stocks seems to be getting it completely sideways at the entry already so you get the car straight and go full throttle.

Thanks for all the replies. Right after I said that thing about not getting in wrecks I got sandwiched in a three wide! I was able to make it back to 9th and got some safety rating though, which is pretty funny. Yeah I'm gonna try to keep it safe, and thanks for the tips I didn't know legends is unoffical. I want to try some pavement shorttrack racing when I can but it doesn't look too popular. I'm gonna have to give dirt cars another go, in my own practice, it's way to crazy out there with lots of people crashing lol. Thanks for all the replies everyone <3

Dirt is definitely the popular thing on the service right now. For good reason since it's really the only sim in the last, 10 years(?), To get anything like it, and on a scale that's as close to the actual thing that's ever been done for Dirt Oval racing. It's great. Glad you're having fun with it. That's all that matters.

So the street stocks just switched to USA and now I am having problems. Off of 4 and 2 sometimes I spin into the inside wall. Does that mean I am on the throttle to much?

I might downsize from a 42 inch TV to a 24 or 27 Inch Monitor in my room on my TV Bench...

...how will this affect my ability to use my WheelStand Pro on my Beanbag do you think?

Like does anyone on here use a single 2-inch set-up?

Not necessarily too much, it could just be the wrong timing, wrong trajectory, steering angle, etc. It's often a combination of small things that result in losing control mid-corner. Hard to say exactly what you need to change without seeing a replay, but in the case of the USA Speedway, the corners are tight/slow enough that the Street Stock has enough grunt to spin the rear tyres on exit, so being more progressive with the initial throttle application can help, and you have to be ready to 'wheel it' and control the slide if it happens. Backing off the throttle a bit as you attempt to catch a slide can help too.

But srsly... I used a 24" single monitor for years, worked fine (using an inaccurate FOV). If you can get a 24 or 27" monitor closer to the back of your wheel than your TV, then you might not lose much FOV anyway.

Hmmm!
Sim Racing For Life FB Page said:
Zandvoort is confirmed to be released as official content said by Marcel Offermans according to SRVN (Dutch Simracing Association).

Also DX11 with graphical updates and the new UI should be ready next month according to the same source who talked with Marcel Offermans from Studio 397.

Edit: news from here: http://www.srvn.nl/nieuws/1286/20

It was a beautiful weekend in Loosdrecht. Our General Assembly we, because we have (over) 5 anniversary expanded to a multi-day LAN. But we were especially honored that Marcel Offermans wanted to come to this special occasion to tell you about Studio 397 and the development of rFactor 2.

In practice, we could already see what the future would bring us rFactor 2, the virtual reality capabilities in conjunction with DX11.

It was interesting to hear how the 'acquisition' of rFactor 2 came about: it started as a partnership, but a piece of bluff poker made Studio 397 could take over the entire Toko. ISI wanted to actually easier from then on she had thought at S397. And so could be developed full. One of the main objectives is to make it easier rFactor 2. So we saw previews of the new User Interface, which makes tools like Live Racers are shortly unnecessary, and for us more important: the results system that can be easily embedded in our new website. Also as admin much easier to manage a server instance and weight penalty or other matters assigned to users within the server.

In addition, it was of course the transition to DX11, the complete infrastructure has to be rebuilt, but that is the standard (former) ISI jobs not so much work. This is because rFactor 2 in the base actually be if it were made for DX11, but the development of the packages came to be in the way, priority is given to the packages and so rFactor 2 was released with DX9.

What followed were some very nice screenshots, without filters, pure adaptation of DX9 to DX11 without too many tweaks to the existing content. What stood out was the beautiful light, both the low-hanging sun and its reflection on the cars. Even details like rear lights and shadows that dynamically move across the surface. Or dynamic light from artificial lighting along the path. This was until now a texture, now it really is a lamp.

We also saw something else: DOF, ie, Depth-of-Field. Something is still missing when the TV cameras in rFactor 2. iRacing and Assetto Corsa have this well and gives a pretty realistic picture from the TV cameras where the subject (the car) is sharp, but the background and the foreground more vague , such as a lens works. You would think this would weigh heavily in terms of performance, but an added benefit is that since you just blurs the background, you can load a lower LOD by car. On balance: better graphics, and less stressful for the PC. Anyhow DX11 is lighter than DX9, which could already show the first tests. Incidentally, many worked with some graphics specialists, who do a lot for Assetto Corsa. So it's not surprising that these simulations more graphic will go together.

New content Marcel could give a tip, but very carefully. There is a large number of tracks and cars available this year. There probably will be a high-end Formula car, but the last licenses have yet to be signed. Behind the scenes, the car is ready for a while. There is a deal with the Circuit Zandvoort, so we can soon be on an official version S397 drive dune circuit. Incidentally, there was a conscious decision to keep the name rFactor 2 and example not to rFactor 3, because of the current contracts with the various licensees. There is also talk about so-called DLC content, which will come probably, for sale on Steam.

All in all, lots of nice developments, the first update to DX11 we would already have seen coming next month. This, coupled with the new user interface and new graphical updates, be sure rFactor 2 in the coming years is the ideal simulator for SRVN

It is an exciting time for the neglected rF2. Everyone will need to excuse the translation from Dutch to English through Google translate.

Can't wait to see what the new Xbox console does for the Forza series on the PC presuming MS and Turn10 give a shit about PC gaming.

I can't believe it I just won a race! iRacing Street Stocks at Charolette, it was a crazy race. It just shoot me up out of rookies since it gave me a + .54 SR! Now I have to decide what I will race in D class, gonna have to pony up and start buying some content now. The race was so exciting I feel like I should upload it to youtube, even though it was just a silly rookie race :)

Awesome that you had a great race! Especially in rookie :)

I guess on D-class you could do the 305 Sprint Cars or National Series for most participation. VRS (www.virtualracingschool.com) also does guidance videos for every week of National Series.

Yeah I am thinking of doing one of the pavement ovals series for now. I am looking forward to buying the National Series and some tracks probably once payday rolls around. I never thought I would start becoming a nascar fan, since I grewup watching indycar and always was such a fan of that. I think iRacing may have made me a fan of stock car racing some haha. Can't wait till I can do indycar ranked races as well.

Thanks for the link to the website, this looks crazy! Real data and cool tutorial videos, awesome. Thanks!

Now that I am thinking about it though the Modifed and Late Models look cool too. I kind of want to learn how to setup a car. The thing is though that I love superspeedway racing the most, not short tracks as much, although I ended up getting used to the usa international by the end of the week and enjoying that too. Hmm decisions, decisions.

All the Nascar related stuff in iRacing is fun IMO. Though I've had a crazy bad luck streak the past two weeks that has seen my iRating do nothing but drop.

Congrats on your win!

Never played around on with oval side of Iracing but on the road side there is no need to rush purchase anything. I've made it to C class without any purchasing, as this is when the better/popular cars become available but I've still got my wallet sealed as I'm still learning.
My race craft has to evolve, I need to get more comfortable and better at judging just how big the gap to the car in front is and general get better at consistent lapping and handling pressure behind.
Worth checking which classes are the popular ones and which you want to race and if you can get there without splashing cash.
There are also tools out they to help maximize the most of your purchases regarding future season track rotation etc

Unrelated I wish I had the PC grunt to use my PSVR in races. It's great for hotlapping but I just can't get the FPS for VR in races with it. Till then I keep racing on my 21:9 but I've got my eye one of these:

Samsung 49" 32:9

Automobilista 1.3.7 mini update:
Added support for auto-rotation with Fanatec CSL-E, Fanatec LEDs native support & a command mapping option to toggle LED to display Gear, Speed or Off
Fixed logic exporting Setups in Time Trial mode which could allow setup from a slower lap time replacing one from a previous faster lap
Adjusted qualifying lap limit (20 laps for most series, 12 for modern formula series)
DynHUD: set trackmap in Original / Telemetry overlays to fixed (can be switched back to rotating via DynHUD Editor); added missing race widgets to Telemetry overlay
Adjusted AI performance in various kart tracks
Karts: Revised tire model, adjusted weight distribution in all karts; Adjusted default steering lock. Adjusted AI performance
Boxer: Fixed brakelight graphical glitch
F-V12: Fixed LCD display rev range
F-Trainer: Minor tire model adjustments; fixed differential settings mistakenly left adjustable
Mini: Corrected engine description
Caterham: Corrected 360R gearbox as H Shifter

Definitely gonna check out the Kart updates, sounds interesting.

Miata with 787B 4 rotor? Yes please.
Already done that with a 30% power increase.

The old way of decrypting the files is better as you can add extra parameters such as different tyres, new gearbox or adde gears, add or remove ABS and TC however this automates a lot of the process!

Oh nice, will be trying out the Karts too, although I'm hooked on the Boxer cup cars, sogood.gif
I wasn't a fan until they added the helper springs that make curbs more manageable and realistic. But since then...? Boxer Cup at Oulton Park = most fun FFB feel(those waves in the uneven tarmac, good god, awesome!) and driving experience I had in a sim, ever, I think.

But AMS looks like arse compared to R3E, AC and pCARS and therefore shouldn't be played...

Wow that game has amazing graphics! I haven't played a MX game since the ps2 so this is a very amazing bump up in looks. I hope it plays well, I wonder if a game like that would support wheels or not.
The MX series has mixed reviews and this is using UE4 as its graphical base hence its looks. I hope it lives up to expectations rather than meeting opinion on Milestone.

I am excited to see how it looks and runs once released as R3E and GTR will use UE4. KartSim is using UE4 but that seems to have slipped into a development abyss.

This might be common knowledge among you hardcores but FFB Clip (mod) made Assetto Corsa so so so much more fun and enjoyable for me and my T500RS:
http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/ffbclip-app.7910/

Dynamic mode is really fun and involving, but straight auto might be a tad more realistic and give a better feel.
I haven't decided which I like more, but I will never play without this mod again.

I recommend reading the five forum pages.

Been meaning to try it out for quite a while now but kept forgetting about it. Will try it out for sure sometime today though.

Recently upgraded my whole setup to Fanatec gear, but I currently only have the F1 Carbon steering wheel (since I mostly play open wheels). I'm looking for a steering wheel that can do GT/MX-5 cars and Rally, is the Porsche one the best?

I've used the BMW rim at a buddies and really liked it.

The Porsche rim, or the universal hub and rim of your choice (either one of theirs, Sparco, Momo, cheaper stuff on eBay/Amazon etc). Depends on how much flexibility you want, and how much you want to spend.

I would not recommend the BMW rim however as it's a absolute tank. Too much weight for even a v2.5 to be spinning around.

In terms of looks and material quality, probably, but I found it quite uncomfortable. They have done something very strange with the 'thumb indent' area - it's very slightly too tight, particularly when wearing gloves. The real 918 RSR wheel doesn't have that shape, so I'm not sure what possessed them to do that.

The BMW wheel is the better shape, but as BT says, it's really heavy, dulling the FFB.

The best option is the Universal Hub, then you can choose your own rim (ideally as lightweight as possible). I'd pick the 'GT' or the 'Round 1' bundles if you want one of theirs.

The CSL wheel is worth considering as a 'budget' option if you're mostly going to use the F1 rim. It doesn't have the quick release or fancy materials, but it's very light, and the rubbery plastic used for the main grip is really good (I might even prefer it to leather or microfibre). The paddles, buttons and overall build is definitely a step below their other wheels however.
