PC Racing Sims

hope most people in this thread never get into cars in real life, the £45 a year sub is also my weekly petrol bill and in the sim you don't need to spend £800 to get a decent exhaust system

Because sitting at home on a PC with a g27 is 1 to 1 with driving a real car?

I'm sorry I don't buy that argument and if you use the simulators F1 teams use argument next I'm not responding.

haha, no i mean thats just an example of spending an amount of money on similar related products. i just can't get my head around iracing being put down as this astronomically expensive service. you can gain credits through race participation, there are 25% off incentives etc. i'd say i probably spend about £80 of my own money a year on iracing, i'm very far from rich but that's pretty much nothing to me for a years service? a single night out costs more than that, a years wow sub costs more than that and its the cost of 2 console games...

Ah okay, I know what you're saying just thought it was a silly comparison.

For the record I'm not one who thinks it's an insane price, but I'd rather not pay a subscription for my racing games.

The pricing model on iRacing had put me off for years, until two weeks ago when I caved in and bought it.

The sim is immense. I thought I would seriously struggle with the forced cockpit mode view, but it's actually really nice. You can set the FOV to whatever you want, the only car that it annoys me in is the V8 Supercar.

Sure you have to pay for content on top of the subscription to pay, but to me, it's worth single penny. I recently bought the Skip Barber Formula 2000 car and 5 other tracks (when you buy 3 or 6 pieces of content together you get a 10% and 20% discount on each piece respectively) and I'm having a blast trying to tame the Skippy around Road Atlanta.

The private lounge fee isn't really a problem at all to be honest. The private hosting lounges are really there for private racing leagues, where usually most people will donate to the league to cover any hosting costs. iRacing host their own 2-hours practice sessions all day and you can test any of yours cars on any of your owned tracks by yourself.

If you have a wheel, pedals and a half-decent interest in sim racing there really is no excuse not to at least try iRacing. They actually have a one-time entry offer where you get 3 months for the price of 1, which is what I did to at least try it out.

The subscription isn't much of a deal to me tbh. Having played WoW for 3 years I probably wont spend even a quarter of that cost on iRacing.

Of course, iRacing pricing is not bad if it's the only thing you play or you're really into sims. But for people like me, who like sims, but also like playing many other games, there's no excuse in spending so much money. And 90€ is not what you pay for two games (There're so many DD sales out there, you know).

Anyway, anybody is free to do whatever they want with their money.

Do they make extension cables for the G27 pedals/shifter (and maybe even power brick)? I want to wire the G27 throughout the tubes of my Playseat, but they're not long enough. I can only find the shifter one and it's $30! I imagine they're not standard cables?

Really? I had no issues running the G27 Cables through my playseat. The power and USB cables not reaching I can understand depending on where your console/pc and the nearest wall socket are.

Anyway what you need:

Power - best to use a regular household extension cord, no real way to extend the power connector without re-crimping the end

USB - USB Extension cord

Pedals/Shifter - DB9 serial cable extension

I used the cable management spools underneath the wheel/shifter (image below). On my Playseat/G27 I used those and then simply wrapped the wires around the outer tubing between components and it worked fine. It might not be as pretty as running through the tubes, but I'm not too worried about stuff like that.

But for $40 you can buy an extension cable if you really want.

Heres some pics of my setup, the only cables that go through the tubes are on the steering column. Works great and allows the cables enough flexibility to still adjust everything, and no need for extensions. You just need to cut a hole in the plastic end cap.

An update on KartSim. Make sure to 'Like' them on Facebook to be eligible for the upcoming beta.

http://www.facebook.com/KartSim

Q: I have a question about your tire physics. How realistic it will be? Is it comparable with that of LFS, rFactor, iRacing?
A: It is more than comparable with those sims you've mentioned. I'll be covering this in more detail in an upcoming developer diary video on the physics of KartSim and its effect on the driving experience (i.e. trail breaking, etc).

Q: Getting excited about the release but wanted to know if the computer requirements have been sorted yet. I want to know if I need to update my PC.
A: Although we haven't confirmed the minimum PC specs as yet, anything with an 8800GT and a 3.0 GHz single core should be adequate.

Q: What engine are we getting in the demo with the Arrow chassis and which engines are we getting in full version same with chassis?
A: The demo will see you driving the Arrow XE-28 chassis with the 17hp Yamaha KT100S engine. The full version will see all the CIK classes (i.e. KF3-KZ1 as well nation-specific categories). You will have to wait for the full list of chassis/engines/circuits once the demo has been released.

Q: Will there be online racing against others?
A: Absolutely.

I'm completely new to PC sim racing but am heavily concidering getting into it. Where do i start? Do any of these games have a healthy online community where finding online games is easy? I'm currently not interested in iRacing due to the monthly fee since i don't even know if i'll enjoy it but it might be an alternative later. I currently only have a 360 controller but will get the dfgt to get me started.

So bottom line is i'd like a sim racer where i can easily find online matches pretty much whenever i feel like it, is that possible?

Oh, and what is up with Simbin's games, there are like 15 of them? Some are expansions to others etc. Which is the one to get?

The most well-supported Simbin game is probably GTR Evolution ($18 on Steam).

And there are plenty of online leagues for rFactor so that's probably what I'd recommend. You can also find pick-up races with random people but you're more likely to experience mismatches and race with fools. There are plenty of free leagues (Race2Play is what I participate in) so just look around.

Race2Play also has premium memberships and they've got a killer deal right now. Buy two months of subscription ($30 total) and get rFactor 2 for free.

My g27 finally arrived today! Skipping a long story of being shipped a box that looked like it got dropped from 30 feet and a longer wait...

The build quality is amazing. Taking the pedals out of the box I was surprised by how heavy they are. Once I powered up the mounted wheel just turning it felt amazing compared to the DFP. While playing the FF feels great and it returns to center nicely.

Does anyone have good settings for GTR2, with 900 degrees and 100% steering sensitivity it still seems to take a bit too much movement to get results.

Ian Bell has released a small development update regarding Slightly Mad Studio's ambitious C.A.R.S. project that is due to be launched soon.

The studio has completed all the legal work required for the project to kick off. Furthermore, the title's logo has been revealed and registered as trademark while the work on the website is still going on.

The backend system that allocates the shares based on the customer's financial commitment is up and running. SMS expects the website to be ready for service in about two weeks time.

Awesome thread. Coincidentally I was thinking of getting back into things. The main reason I strayed is because I bought a new PC many years ago and a new desk and it was far more convenient to stick with consoles and a home theater setup.

Now I'm considering getting a nwe PC for F1 2011 that can sit in my home theater. Sort of ironic because it isn't quite sim.

Looking for a PC with a small form factor that will run the latest and greatest racing sims while outputting 5.1 sound to my speakers and 1080p to my screen.

About RBR I've seen it stretches on widescreen setups because it wasn't made for them...has the community fixed that with a mod?

You could look at getting a Shuttle PC they are quite small and still offer expansion options for PCIE Graphics cards and various CPU's and RAM options. I have a mATX PC myself that's housed inside an Antec Mini P180 case, it's quite a bit smaller than your average ATX case and I can easily carry it under my arm when going to LANS.

There was a widescreen mod for RBR but I couldn't get it working on Windows 7 x64.

If you're willing to DIY, this is a case that's gotten good buzz in the PC thread on gaf. I can believe it, too, because it's utilizing the same thermal flow as the custom case I built years ago. Should be quiet and cool.

+1 for a Shuttle PC

I have been using them for many years for my high end gaming rigs!

My current Shuttle that I use with my Triple Screen racing cockpit setup:
Note: I have a Drive bay PSU installed internally to power the GTX 590

Shuttle SX58H7 | I7 960 | 6GB DDR3 | Intel X25M Raid 0 | GTX590

Shuttle PC looks like the way to go. Perfect. Thanks guys.

Now need a vidcard that will do 60+ fps for all the latest and greatest games but there is no need for 3 screen output. Needs to have audio coming out of the HDMI too.

Also need a bigger house for a triple projector screen setup but that can wait. lol

Slightly Mad Studios has released a new render from its upcoming, community-funded project.

Interestingly, the car sports a completely fictitious paint scheme without any Audi logos. This may very well be a sign that licensing is still being worked on.

I'll eat my hat if the actual gameplay looks like that. :p

Car models sure look detailed though. Is it too much to want a F1 Mclaren MP4/4?

Investor power rules, so if enough people want it it will be made. Ian Bell said the same about off road rallying.

Ferrari Racing Legends revived somewhere:

Ian Bell:

On the Ferrari game, expect some interesting news very soon.

Megaton!!!

An update on rFactor 2 taken from this...

They intend for this product to get a lot more support than rFactor 1 in terms of updates, new features, new content, and access to the team via the forums and website. Infact, I've personally been responsible for a couple of really juicy pieces of content being licensed that will both be released as addons sometime in 2012. What's nice is that every project ISI has is mutually beneficial, so new features brought into rF2 make it into other commercial products we have, and vice-versa. It's also nice to be able to get good solid data from some partners, even if that isn't something the rFactor 2 community thinks they benefit from. The tire model, for example, greatly benefited from the knowledge ISI has on different types of tires.

Next? Well the most recent thing I posted was that we're getting some of the graphical effects plugged into the development build of the software. This means that finally we'll be able to put out some shots which are more representative of the looks of rFactor 2. This has probably been one of the hardest things for the community to understand, because most of them have never seen base art from a game before.

C.A.R.S will have laser scanned circuits :D

Ian Bell:

We are well progressed in negotiations with laser scanning specialists to commission scanning of all of the real tracks in the game. The standards we are aiming for are to 2 millimetres accuracy, to the extent that cracks in the asphalt should be discernible.

I think 15 base tracks with variation is probably a good amount. We had 100 layouts or so for Shift 2 and I'd prefer we polish the nads off 15 tracks (plus variations) as opposed to trying to wedge more in for the sake of it.

The most important thing is that we get enough of the tracks that people want. The tracks we ship with will of course be added to over time but this will be driven by the investors and issues such as licensing costs and scanning access.

Nordschleife, Bathurst, Spa and more laser scanned makes me all giddy inside. The game will be epic.

HOLY SHIT.

I might as well cancel iRacing after the 3 month promotion period since i don't really play it that much anymore. (£45 wasted on Skippy and a handful of tracks though...)

No, no, and no.

I'm tired of racing games always using really famous tracks. I'd much rather them focus on the lesser-known gems that most people have never heard of.

So, crunch time for a steering wheel.
Main usage will be F1 2011 & rFactor 2

Options are;

Logitech DFGT
+ Cheap and instantly available (£99 instore @ Game)
- Cack pedals?
- Cheap?

Fanatec Porsche Carrera
+ ultra adjustable (important for F1 2011 re: steering range, lock etc)
+ Fanatec Bundle come with Fanatec Wheelstand
- expensive (£190)
- Belt drive instead of gear internals?

Logitech G27
+ The Best, allegedly
- expensive (£200 w/no stand)

Any thoughts?
