PC to PS3 Media Streaming (DLNA) Thread

I never knew this thread existed! :O

Ok, I've checked a few pages on here, and didn't see this problem discussed. I've actually never seen this problem discussed anywhere on the great wide interwebs, and I've been having this issue ever since the initial firmware update that enabled DLNA support went live. Hopefully, some of you guys will be able to help me (if you'd be kind enough to do so).

For some reason, whenever I enable DLNA support, my ps3 suddenly has issues logging into the PSN. I can usually either log in to PSN, or connect to my PC, but I can never do both simultaneously. When I'm logged into PSN, my PC doesn't even show up an as option under the other tabs. Usually after a few minutes of fighting with the thing trying to get it to connect to both, it suddenly refuses to connect to either. That's when I give up and disable DLNA.

On the rare occasion that it connects to my PC, though, it's awesome, because I can access so much stuff through WMP. Of course, it logs me out of PSN whenever I manage to do so.

So basically I can't get anything to work right, and I just leave DLNA disabled 24/7.

I have a launch ps3 and my PC is running Vista. Both are connected through a Linksys router via wi-fi.

Does anybody have any tips that could help me out?
Im not really the one to give you tech support on this, but just a question. Why are you using WMP over PMS? After all the scouring Ive done, I was left with the impression that PMS was the best option. From my experience with it, I can only agree, as its fast and stable, with no framing issue so far that ive encountered. Maybe you should try it out and see if it helps. I have no idea if Ive just helped you or not, but Im tryin :lol

And I haven't tried messing with this for months, but for some reason it's working fine now. :lol Well, it logged me out once, but I logged back in and now it's running smooth as butter. I'm chatting while streaming.

Why would I go through the hassle of installing a new program when I can't even get basic streaming to work? :lol

But now that it's working, I'll look into it. :p

Everything is done automatically with PMS. I literally installed the program, opened it, and the icon popped up on my ps3. I had no idea what any of the options where, or even what the program looked like to be honest...it just worked.

What about transferring files to the ps3, whats the best option? Is it possible to just copy something "straight" so to speak? Ive read a bit and to copy properly while streaming you have to have certain settings to avoid huge file sizes. I tried it once, and before I ever reached one percent, the file was well over its original size :lol

You dumb bastard :lol

Ok, a real question. How do would I transfer a theme file to the ps3? I cant seem to find an option that will allow me to do such, as there doesnt seems to be a file explorer outside of a video, pic, or music extension.

Create the maps X:\PS3\THEME\ on a memorystick and put the themes in there. Put the stick in one of your PS3 usb ports and you can find the theme in the XMB theme section. Or you can just use the PS3 browser to go directly to the site that offers themes as a direct download.

Thank goodness this thread came up. I was just about to begin transferring GBs of music to my PS3 on a 256MB flash drive.

This got me going right here.

Under common transcode options, make sure that 'definitely disable subtitles' is unchecked.
Under MEncoder for subtitles add "und" (undetermined) to the list of subtitle language priorities. For example my line reads as "eng, fre, jpn, ger, und".
Make sure that "ASS/SSA subtitles" is checked below as well as "Autoload srt/sub".

Lemme know if any of that helps.

any 1 else have a netgear DG834G ?

does NOT work with this.

you can see the files ..hell they will even copy over ... but hella fucking slowly.

problem goes away if you use the routers wifi ..but of course you are limited to that speed.

take the router out of the question ...cross over direct from pc to ps3 ..... these media sharing apps work a charm.

weiiird.

Is it possible to have thumbnail icons of the videos appear in the file listing on the PS3 when using uPnP yet? I am using an old version of TVersity which doesn't do this, I was wondering if newer versions of TVersity or any other software does this yet?

Ps3Mediaserver does this. And everything else. And better.

Awesome, this and the fact that there is a linux build will mean I will definitely be trying it tonight. It seems like the real deal, the only reason I have been using TVersity for so long was because it was the first one I tried and at the time (2 years ago) it was probably the best.

Does the 360 work well with PMS now? I have 2 360's and a PS3 and have been defaulting to the standard MP connection after finally getting sick of TVersity.

Aslo outside of MP, I constanly lost connection to TVersity or PMS with my PS3, restarting the service on the PC would generally correct it.

It does, it works better with the PS3 but is still functional, enough so that i've finally retired TVersity as my streaming source for both of my consoles.

It was the same for me, when I actually got a tversity build to work as I wanted it to there wasn't any real reason to change anything, even though people kept telling me about Ps3mediaserver. Once I tried it tversity was uninstalled never ever to return. Ps3mediaserver really is the best media server around.

Pretty much this. I even thought about finally updating OP with information about PMS, but I'm lazy and noone really reads it anyway. :p

So PS3 Media Server is still the king for PC->PS3 streaming?

That thing is bananas, btw. The PS3 has completely replaced the Xbox for streaming purposes, and it's due to PS3MS.

PS3 Media Server is amazing. And Draft, both 360 and PS3 recognize it despite what it's named. You can just use it depending on what system you have on at the moment =)

I tried out PS3MS this morning after reading all the praise for it in here.

I gotta say, I much prefer Tversity for simplicity. Tversity was as simple as downloading and pushing a button to start sharing.

PS3MS forced me to modify registry entries manually, customize Windows networking features, gave me trojan virus warnings, blocked ports, etc.

It was a major pain in the ass and I have now removed it completely from my PC. Let this be a lesson to me, if you've got something that works perfectly, which Tversity does for me, don't go messing with it for no good reason.

Does anyone know why not all gametrailers videos are playing properly? For example the GOW III dev walkthrough is not working.

360 support works great, pretty much on a parity with the PS3 integration.

Tnx for that.

Works out of the box for me. No probs.

After KillJade's post, I'm wondering if this PS3MS is really for me. TVersity works fine for me, except that it seems to be not able to keep up for high bitrate movies over my wireless. But I thought that was more to do with bandwidth than anything else. Are most people hyping PS3MS because of compatibility with formats such as MKV? Or are there other reasons? Are other people having similar pains to KillJade?

Your experience with PS3MS is atypical. I'm running Vista x64, launch PS3, & a DIR-655 router and didn't need to manually alter anything in order to get Media Server to work. You need UPNP to be enabled and active on your PS3 (and router, of course) in order for it to work properly.

It sounds like your problems may be related to third-party anti-virus or firewall software on your PC. Personally, I run neither -- a continually updated Vista x64 installation is almost impossible to infect unless you manually give permission to the virus/adware to install.

PS3MS is nice because it very simply gives your PS3 access to all of the files on your PC (by default), and has great compatibility and transcoding options -- you can transfer almost any format into one that the PS3 can read on the fly, so long as your PC and PC --> PS3 connection are up to the task.

The only thing PS3 Media Server won't do wirelessly is 1080P. It stutters.

Everything else, every file format up to 720p, works wirelessly almost flawlessly.

This is the reason I own a PS3. Sure, it took a while to configure everything just right, and I have a good router (and an extender), but it was so worth it.

You live in bizarro world. Seriously, Tversity is good for it's simplicity= :lol

But as already mentioned you probably have some issues with 3rd party programs if you can't get PSM to work right away. Those trojan virus varnings is a big question mark too.

And no, a working Tversity is not a good reason to not download the far superior PSM.

Sooo...if you configured it, can you tell my why some gametrailer videos aren't working? Is it because of the flash format?

I actually haven't played any Flash videos through it ;). Maybe I should try it.

By the way, I am using the OS X version of PMS. I have a Airport Extreme Base Station N and an Airport Express N (which I have a switch hooked up to, which my PS3 accesses, which is a bit of a wireless cheat.)

I own a PS3 since '07 but never used the media server function until now.
Last weekend I grew tired of using my 8GB usb stick to watch some videos on my PS3, so I thought I might give the streaming option a try.
So after a little search on the internet Tversity seemed to get quite a lot of praise, after I downloaded and installed it I tried to stream some media on my PS3.
After about 30min I had enough of this clusterfuck of program and deinstalled it right away, picture and music streaming worked flawlessly but somehow I didn't managed to get a video stream to work and the folder structure was a mess on my PS3.

Disappointed I did an internet search again and found PS3 Media Server, so I installed this one and like Tversity my PS3 was recognized out of the box.
But this time I got a functioning video stream (with less hassle), the program is well structured, streams without stutter (with the bandwidth limit option though) and the files are well organized when they appear on my PS3.

I don't know if maybe I'm just too stupid for Tversity, but PS3 Media Server is superior in every matter, except that Tversity does look way fancier.
I'm even considering giving them some PayPal love if PS3 Media Server keeps running like a charm.

I use a Norton firewall, nothing too fancy.

But like I said, Tversity works really well and was hassle-free, so there's really no reason for me to stop using it.

You should just remove everything and just put PMS in the op. Or at least give it the first spot and just list the other as alternatives. More people need to be saved from horrible media servers and PSM deserves to get more users.

Why are some of my radio streams playing soooo slooooooow. :(

Are you using TVerisity or PMS?

I had issues with TVersity and radio streams in general (though that was a while back), and have switched to PMS. I did have a weird issue like you mention though. The station is normally accesses via an m3u file (that simply contains a link to an mp3). I'd have to double check which one ended up working, but if your station uses the same formats, you may want to try the other one (to access the mp3, simply save the m3u and open it up to get the link).

Admittedly, I did not do a lot of testing with it ... I just found what worked and stayed with it. So it's possible what I saw was a random bug, and not a pervasive issue handling the format. It really is weird when you think about it. Why would one work, and the other not? One is simply the direct stream, the other is a text file that contains a link to the direct stream.

Weird.

For some reason my PS3 media server never works initially I always have to close it and restart it to get it to work. I even have it installed as a windows service.

For me it has been the opposite.
I had to work hard to get TVersity send the subs along with the videos, to get the transcoding working etc, while with PS3MS I only had to install it, start it and got everything working from the start.
Needless to say that I deleted TVersity and only use PS3MS now.

So after using PMS it appears a large majority of my iTunes album covers have disappeared. Does anyone know why or how to fix it? Will I have to re-get all the covers and will it just happen again? Some of them are still there but most disappeared.

The complaint I had with Tversity is that I had to rescan a folder if I wanted to see newly added files; with PSMS no rescan is needed. Also, IIRC, Tversity's folder structure buries your media folders deeper than PSMS's.
