Pearl Jam - Jeremy

bender

What time is it?
I think I rebelled against Pearl Jam because of that song/album. I was at that young, dumb age and it was so damned popular at school. I've never really gotten into them, although Wishlist and Yellow Ledbetter are bangers though.

As for the topic, yep, great song. Not even sure it was supposed to be a single, originally. I remember reading long ago that the band approached the director and said he could make a video for any song on their album, and he picked Jeremy.

also here are actual lyrics from the end of that (and basically every) PJ song...

"Uh uh uh uh (spoke in, spoke in, spoke in)
(Spoke in)
Uh uh uh uh (spoke in, spoke in, spoke in)
Whoa oh (spoke in)
(Spoke in, spoke in)
Whoa oh (spoke in)
Whoa oh (spoke in, spoke in, spoke in)
Ah ah ah yeah
Ah ah ah ah (spoke in, spoke in, spoke in)
Yeah yeah ah ah ah (spoke in, spoke in, spoke in)
Ah ah ah ah ah"

in a serious note, Ten is one of the best albums of the 90's, defines grunge rock more than Nirvana ever did (and i love nirvana) and eddie vedders into the wild soundtrack is a great album that really takes me to a special place.

i'd say my favorite PJ song is black. the aaron lewis (Staind) cover is particularly amazing.

A great track for sure but personally I prefer other "angry tracks" like Rearviewmirror, Leash and Do the Evolution.

I too miss the old angry Pearl Jam. They are too tame now. I also think Vedder's voice or singing style has lost something he used to have.

Song is okay. In general I find Pearl Jam to pretty "meh". Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and even lesser grunge bands like Tad , Screaming Trees and Mudhoney were superior to Pearl Jam.

is it fair to say that Pearl Jam might have popularized School shootings with that song?

They didn’t happen previously to it.

alice in chains has gotta be the best of the bunch for me. i cant even say i dug into their albums that much, but their sound is so raw heavy and i really believe it influenced a lot fo the heavier industrial/death metal scene we have now (of course slayer and cannibal corpse were even more influential but i dont want to discount grunge bands bc i think they altered rock history in a huge way, for better or worse)

heres a list of hundreds of school shooting that happened before the year 1990 (well, the list is 2000 but Ten came out in 1991 i think)

they are mostly 1 and 2 people death tolls, but plenty of them are 3 or more which is considered "mass shooting". there will always be sick people that do bad things. although influential, the world, current events and culture are not the only contributors to people committing atrocities. its been happening since the beginning of time and it will keep happening (unfortunately).

ClaaAaAaAAass todaaaaay

Was supposed to have seen them for the first time in July, rescheduled for next year, pretty excited.

Jeremy isn't even about a school shooting, though. It's about someone who sadly took their own life in the middle of their classroom, and it's based on a true story.

Ten is what of my favorite rock albums, it's consistently great from one track to another unlike many others that have filler songs. So much power and emotion in Jeremy, Black, Alive, etc. My favorite is Even Flow though, it would make for a great Jojo stand name.

Saw them live 1993 here in Calgary, before they really took off.
Tiny little hockey arena in the middle of summer, no AC so the place was a giant sweat box, so hot that sweat and condensation was dripping from the rafters. Didn't stop them from putting on a great show including crowd surfing and tons of energy.
Great band live, obviously evidenced by the great videos posted above.
For many of us GenX Perl Jam are one the swan-song bands of our generation and royalty of the grunge scene.

Nah I think it was the Boomtown Rats who completely invented the concept of Song-Inspiring-Mass-Shootings-At-School with "I don't like Mondays".

song was real even back in the 90s

there was a lot of media about fantasizing about school violence. Calvin and Hobbes used to show him blowing up the school with a fighter jet. The Simpsons had Bart literally grabbing a machine gun.

I remember crying when I first watched this performance of Jeremy:

Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden, I loved them all. The 90's was an absolute juggernaut decade for rock, and I feel lucky to have been a part of that cultural shift.

Great song. They don't make em like this anymore. Man the 90's were amazing. What a scene it was back then. If you weren't around you missed out.

here is another classic

while we are on the subject of grunge and chris cornell, did everyone hear the cover of GnR's Patience by him? my god dude, i had a moment with this song. took me way back, and he does an amazing job. check it out if you havent...

All those clips just remind me of how much of a best Dave Abbruzzese was with PJ. I really like Matt Cameron, but PJ just sounded incredible with DA on the sticks.

Also, catch PJ if you can if you get the chance to - they are still an incredible live band. Last saw them at the O2 Arena last year - the rescheduled gig after Eddie lost his voice - I think it was the only time he had to postpone a gig because of that.

They made up for it by cramming in 33 songs in three hours...

Good band, sadly fronted by Eddie Vetter. I just can’t stand the dude. He’s like the American Bono ( gee I can’t sing, guess I’ll constantly emote! ) Both of them need to be slapped around.

I loved it as a teen when it was new. Then as they played it for the millionth time on MTV and the local rock channel I became comfortably numb to it. Eh.

Yeah I agree, I thought PJ hit the hardest when Dave A. was drumming for them. The beats / grooves just really complimented the songs that they were writing. From what I've watched / heard. The fame became so intimidating to Eddie Vedder that he basically intentionally started working his way into the writing process and pseudo sabotaging their success.

I remember reading this essay by a guy who went to the same school as the boy the song is loosley based off of. It kind of makes one think about how one can twist the truth to suit one's needs or rather making a media martyr. But then, the song "Jeremy" does remind me of a time where things such as school shootings or even just taking a gun to school just seemed so unreal.

Not to say Pearl Jam was not a great band for the 90s and one of my favorites for the genre.

I remember being in 10th grade and my kick ass lady health teacher showed us this video as an introduction to her lesson about suicide/peer pressure/depression.
So cool.

Totally un related but on my last day in rehab. After like 60 days, this guy who never talked sang this song in group for us and said he would miss me.

I cried and gave him a big hug.
