Basically, don't lend any book, movie, game, etc. to someone unless you're OK with never getting it back. It's just how people are with these things; people think they'll get to it but never quite do.

If you do want something back, just ask for it, and people will generally return it.

I did the same mistake of giving a schoolmate my psx for a couple weeks in that time, I was 3rd year high school.
Next day the guy tells me that he got the psx stolen as he was having a drink the day I gave him the psx. I asked him to give me cash so I could get another used psx at least & the fucking guy kept me hanging on even after I had my mom contact his parents were even bigger liars than their son.
Eventually I never got anything back.
Shit like this happens to people like us OP.
I hope one day the good we did in our lives comes back at us somehow.

Never loaned any games as a kid per se, I was actually leasing them to neighbours to buy new games. Never got any issues getting them back.

RIP about 20 asian films (Oldboy, New World etc etc) lent to my friend. The guy has issues with returning stuff.

Same situation here but what's worse is when they let other people borrow it like it was theirs to being with. Consider it gone for good. Then I had two roommates who was letting people borrow my stuff when I wasn't around. Just reasons why I stopped and why I went digital. I don't even let people borrow any service that I subscribe to because they'll probably do the same thing again.

I pretty much only buy CDs in store and I bought Wasted Years when it was new and I've only seen it once since and that was like 3 years ago and I've almost never seen Gorillaz stuff in store, that'll probably change with their new album but still pretty mad.
