People with atypical and limited gaming palettes

In the present day there's obviously a lot (perhaps even a majority) of video game players who happily dedicate themselves to just one or a small number of popular titles.
But I'm more curious about people who game regularly and preferably exclusively on a "retro" (defined as seventh generation or earlier for the purposes of this discussion) console and especially those who play a limited number of games for that system. They aren't retro collectors or self defined retro gamers but they know what they like and they like what they know.

Examples:
The friend still rocking an original Xbox (unmodded) and obsessively playing ESPN NFL 2K5 to this very day.
The cousin who refuses to upgrade from his PS3 to a PS4/5 because playing the Resistance trilogy and MotorStorm games remains a daily pleasure.
The older brother who games on a SNES crudely connected to his 4K tv.
The friend's sister with no interest in games beyond playing various Lego titles on the Wii.
The millennial uncle who regularly plays 50 Cent: Bulletproof on his PS2 slim. He purchased the game and console back in 2006 alongside still shrink wrapped copies of Fifa 06 and Peter Jackson's King Kong.

Anyone know of any such reliable contented gamers in your real lives?

I used to be one of them! I primarily played on a PS2 and PS3 from 2020-2021 until i got my Series S and then my PC.

Back when prices were awful for GPUs, this was my way of coping. Though, we're in the same situation now, I at least have a decent PC to weather this storm.

I do not know anyone like that but i have to say I respect people who just know what they like and they just enjoy it.

This is a good idea for a thread man.

I've got this buddy that I grew up with in TN, (haven't lived there for about 20 years now), and he literally only plays Super Nintendo, and not even much of the library, just A Link to the Past and MegaMan X, and the very occasional game of Street Fighter 2 Turbo. That's completely and totally it, nothing else. And ya know what? This mother fucker still keeps it hooked up to the living room TV just in case he's gonna blast through Zelda or MegaMan X again lol.

I can't hate on his taste though. Best console, and the best games on said console.

Hipsters. Nothing wrong with that lifestyle but it exists. One of my best friends is a hipster. Many industry writer positions are held by them. They are like the libertarian party of video games.

Hello. I play Street Fighters (on Fightcade), Castlevanias, Megamans regurlarly. And at least once a year I play Chrono Trigger and Yoshi's Island. Sometimes I find some new game that I like, play and finish but go back to those.

My sister-in-law just plays Mario Kart 64. Has an N64 right next to the telly and just seems to play that single game in the cart slot to this day.

Long before the retro gaming craze I was at someone’s house and all him and his wife had was a smallish tv with a VCR with like 10 movies and an NES with Contra, Mario 3, and I think maybe one or possibly two other NES games. This was around 2005.

When I got the SNES Classic, I made it a point to beat all of the games before moving on to something else, but I like many modern games too.

Yeah I got a couple friends like this. One of them just plays N64 Mario Kart, Star Fox and F Zero, literally only those 3 games. The other one still has their SNES hooked up just to play all the Donkey Kong Country games, that's it.

Its pretty crazy, I mean I've tried to get them into other games before but they just are completely uninterested.

Seems to me, "hipsters" are more like those who only play popular AAA games on current systems. People who only play shit like Stellar Blade and TLOU2 and Spiderman.

A childhood friend has been playing nothing but these Professor Layton games on his DS for the last 5 years.

8 bit,16 bit and GBA primarily for me. Mind you that is with retrotink 4K or analogue console replacements, occasionally I'll use an old CRT with DAC. Eagerly looking forward to the Analogue 64. I've turned into one of those casual modern gamers who only buy a few new games a year and lose interest quicky in the modern game. So OP, you've basically described and what my friends think.

I like to think myself an open minded person.
But folks who ONLY play WWE, FIFA or goddamn Cricket gives me the creeps. India is basically a PUBG hub, they see nothing else in gaming.

I have family members like this. One of them played on nothing but a Genesis. He's had all the same friends since they were 5 or so, and they come over and play on that thing like they did when they were kids. When I was buying a house, I moved in with him for a few months, i had a PS3 at the time, and we'd play Destiny like crazy, so when I left I gave him the PS3 and now he has that, but I don't think he's ever playing anything on it but Destiny.

My wife will only play 2D games as she gets motion sickness from 3D games.
Dude my wife's the complete opposite. She is literally incapable of playing 2D games, she just can't do it, she lacks the dexterity for it, as she can't hold buttons while hitting other buttons for some reason. 3D only for her, and I've told her she's missing out on some of the greatest of all time but, eh, what can ya do?

I’ve been this way in spurts.

Mostly because I don’t exactly have the time to try everything out so I’d rather invest it in something I know I’ll enjoy.

I only play remakes.
Because i strongly believe all the talent has left the building due to AI

So the only thing i will play is remakes from a pre AI era

Havent played in a while, but I did my share still playing COD4, World at War and Black Ops 1 about 10 years after launch. Also bought some super oldies in Steam/GOG from the 90s. Believe it or not, could still get into games no problem on Xbox.

But aside from that I never cared about keeping old consoles and games. I sell them off or trade them in. I dont know anyone who games to be retro either. They either dont game anymore or still have a modern console or Switch for the fam.

This made me laugh. I'm a millennial uncle and the game currently sitting in my PS2 slim is 50 Cent: Bulletproof.

I play most genres and systems though, mainly PS5.

I don’t deny that my taste is “limited” but at same time I have still find plenty of games to enjoy and unlike most people on internet these days you don’t see me making threads of “how gaming sucks now” blah, blah, blah. I’m actually enjoying the games I’m playing.

I'm with my man Danjin on this one. Actually, the last JRPG I played was in December-January, and that isn't even considered a "real JRPG" around here (FFXVI). Since then, I've played Space Marine 2, Lost Records, SW Outlaws, and I've also put hundreds of hours into Wuthering Waves, Genshin Impact, and Zenless Zone Zero which are gacha games.

Don't know if that counts, but I've only bought and played single player games on PS4 and 5, like, I've never even started a single multiplayer game/match on these consoles. And I don't have a single online friend and I don't even care.

Not really the same, but I have a friend that plays turn based games exclusively, everything else is not really for him, even though it's not like he sucks at gaming, it's just his preference.

Another one refuses to play *anything* with a controller on PC. Keyboard and mouse is a must.

People who only play JRPGs

Nah I might play alot of JRPGs, but I do like playing outside the genre. I played through most of the Resident Evil Games two years ago. Resident Evil Remake HD Remaster and Resident Evil 8 are my two favorite in the franchise. The first one is a classic horror style romp through a creepy mansion and the other one is a first person shooter. I got Prey for 5 bucks on Amazon and I played that and loved that game. That's a first person shooter. Admittedly there's only a few WRPGs I love like Mass Effect Trilogy, The Witcher Trilogy and Fables Trilogy. I like adventure games like Zelda Windwaker and Okami. Oh oh Little Nightmares games are fantastic and can't wait for the third game. I wish we got a Steamworld Dig 3. I just started to get into Visual Novels and The House In Fata Morgana is my favorite so far. Batman Arkham Asylum is my favorite Arkham game. I'm just giving example of games I love that aren't JRPGs. I still play a ton of JRPGs but I try to mix it up

If it came to it, I could happily play nothing but UT2004 forever - still the best arena shooter ever made!

Yeah I also play mecha games like Armored Core and point & click adventure games like Ace Attorney and Another Code and survival horror game and Monster Hunter.

I play other games besides JRPGs but amount of western games I play has been significantly reduced. I think last year the only western game I played was Silent Hill 2 Remake.

So you can say my taste is "limited" because I mostly play Japanese games and wont deny that.

Back in collece (10 years ago) i had a room mate who regularly played SMB 3 on his NES.

Dude was a true master. Imported an US console and copy of the game just to have it at 60fps, he played it sober, drunk, stoned, made some challenges like only 1 live, only little mario, 100%. The ost of the game is burned in my brain like pictures on an oled display. I can't touch that game because ofcit.

None of these are on consoles, but on ancient PCs.

One of my friends plays exclusively Crysis and Farming Simulator.

My moms aunt only used to only play Diablo 2 and eventually 3, did so for about 2 decades, thousands of hours in those games.

I also know someone who only plays World of Warcraft and another who sticks almost exclusively to League of Legends, but there's probably tens of millions of people like these 2. Id be surprised if people who exclusively play FIFA and/or Call of Duty dont make up more than 50% of gamers (if we exclude mobile)

I believe that people with "limited palettes" are the norm and those who play more than 2 or perhaps 3 specific games are the minority, i don't actually personally know anyone who would fall into the later category.

Yeah I forgot about that, also have a couple friends who literally only play WoW and have been since release.
It's crazy to me. My friend (who is friends with the WoW guy) has tried to introduce him to other games, and he'll play briefly, but he always goes back to WoW. Apparently he has some kind of mental issues and WoW is like therapy for him. It's kinda wild to think how ingrained the entire gameplay loop is in his psyche at this point after 20 years of playing daily or close to it.

It was more to poke fun out of you guys but I'm not too far behind you all. I do play a lot more of ocidental games than western ones but that is just my preference. I do play a bunch of stuff that be considered as varied like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Space Marine 2, fighting games of all kind, indies, shooters, and RPGs of all type.

Great to see you didn't get mad or anything, and it is cool getting your input in different types of genres. You all make threads more fun.

Episode 4 Movie GIF by Star Wars

The only multiplayer FPS games I play are Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament 99. To me the genre peaked there and it has only been downhill from there.

Edit: I just remembered I have a friend who exclusively plays Microsoft Flight Simulator X and has no interest in upgrading to FS2020/2024. He's a private jet pilot so I guess he just loves flying.

Yea my best friend still has a PS3 that he randomly plays Dark Souls on. He never beat it and he has like 300+ hours in it and randomly has been playing it every few months for the last 10 years or so.
