Looking back, I realized that during my first playthrough, I returned at least five DVDs late, yet I never had to pay a fee for any of them. After the first late fee, which was waived, something always came up with the cashier and I was able to return it freely.
Part of me wants to believe this is luck-based, but now I kinda doubt it. Has anyone ever actually had to pay a late fee?
Did the game fake me out with the calendar and my preconceptions from 3 and 4?
I assumed I had until March-ish of "next year," but suddenly we're on a "final" mission into Mementos that really seems like the lead up to an end boss...

I think I just entered end game last night. I finished Palace
6? 7? (Nijima)
and all I can say is HOLY FUCKING SHIT at the story right now. Probably propels this game to one of the best I've played in years.
Watching everything come together like that and the aftermath during that hour-long barrage of cutscenes was just so satisfying. I had a feeling who the traitor was, but not for the reasons given in the game. I completely missed the pancake hint, which I think was intentional by the game because that was such a throwaway scene.
Instead, I was slightly suspicious of Akechi because of the deal he had with us was pretty much blackmail, plus he wanted us to disband afterwards. It was just too perfect on his end and had him hold all the cards, even though he was acting like our friend. I didn't really have that much beef with the guy before then - he was kind of full of himself but I didn't think it was any worse than that. I actually felt sorry for him on the days when he was getting screwed over by public opinion.
But what really cemented the creepy feeling for me was his victory screen after an all-out attack lol. That looked really fucking creepy and fanatical, in a way that none of the other characters' victory screens were. That, plus his voice lines in the palace always kind of backseating Joker annoyed me, and I quickly benched him when I usually keep the new character in the palace where the character's introduced because the game always makes that character very strong in their own palace.
Very happy with how things are going now. Well worth staying up late to play.
Side thoughts (still spoilery):
Makoto has fucking BALLS OF STEEL man. She does so much stuff in the game that takes serious guts and brains, like interviewing Akechi in public while doing this whole cat and mouse game with him, stealing her sister's laptop data, and so on. I thought she would be kinda boring because of the whole overdone Justice Girl trope, but she's really turning into a great character.
A nice touch that I just realized in the game is that in the beach sequence, the swimsuits show that Makoto is actually much more ripped than Ann. Good attention to detail there.

Morgana never gets his food. I don't even like Morgana that much, but it's just sad when someone's looking forward to some food so much and then is left hanging.
Wow, I knew the bigger, more popular locations in Tokyo were modeled after the real places, but didn't imagine it extended to Yongen Jaya. That's awesome.

Started the Fortune Arcana and got the ability to increase one of my social stats at a higher rate, but how do I choose which stat I want to use this skill on?
Fortune is one of those arcanas I should prioritize right?
The maid is also giving me really useful perks, I've been prioritizing her at night.
Sojiro is saying he needs to sort things out with that other dude, do I need to wait for a story event to continue his arcana?

It works for all stats and depends on the activity you're doing afterwards. However you can't get more than three points in a stat, so this perk is not really worth it.

For stat boosts, see the Fortune lady during the day and get the Luck Reading from her. You'll get to choose a stat from there, and you'll have increased growth on that stat for the day if you do an activity that increases that stat. For example, if you choose to get more Guts, then doing an activity that increases Guts on that day will give you more of that stat.
Fortune should definitely be prioritized. Fortune and Temperance give super useful perks. I started Fortune late, and now I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna max a lot of confidants before the game ends.
For Sojiro, you might be at the part where you need to

Wow.
The textures on those yellow machines are atrocious though. It's a shame some textures are so low quality, they stick out like a sore thumb.
It's a multiplier effect so pick whichever stat you're boosting the most that day (or the one you need to rank up to unlock something). It starts from the reading and persists until you sleep , so you can eg get it in an evening for a rainy night or get it to boost evening stats if it rained in the afternoon.
Her level 7 lets you give give points to a Confidant once per day without spending time. Used efficiently it can mostly avoid hangouts after it unlocks.
Temperance is another good one (and needs to be finished before the end of Palace 6 if you want to max it).
You need to talk to Futaba to advance Sojiro's link now (assuming you've met the Kindness requirement, otherwise you need to Max Kindness) It'll take a time slot to do it.
Do I have to do the mementos requests that require you to work at a place to finish Mishima's confidant? I really don't want to work that much on my first playthrough and I'm already loaded with money.

You have to do the quests he gives you immediately after he ranks up at times (I think it's like Rank 4 and Rank 8 that he gives them). You get hard gates at certain points otherwise (eg you can't move from 9 to 10 unit you finish the Rank 8 Quest).
And I believe a certain number of others but you don't have to do all of them so you can pick and choose. Other Confidant requests don't count for Mishima of course.

doing the cyberstalker one je gave me after Rank 7 but I've got three others which all require me to work at a different place. Will I get to Rank 8 without doing those ones?
Oh wow, I just watched the aftermath of the secret super boss and that was pretty damn terrible,
and as if what they were implying with Caroline and Justine's "confession" wasn't obvious enough, you have Lavenza literally saying she loves you later on.
I mean I'm glad this is somewhat "hidden" but still, yikes,
this garbage is precisely what I was scared would happen when the attendants were revealed way back.
Hashino and company can fuck right off, I won't miss them.
I know I'm overpowered, but that was a joke, and the same kinda applies to 6 (though that was honestly a bit harder due to the gimmick + them at least attempting to buff). The first few bosses had interesting gimmicks and you actually had to take advantage of weaknesses and such. These past few have just been doing as much damage as possible, and have been pretty boring (and easy) as a result. It's kinda disappointing to get all hyped for a fight when literally fighting random enemies in the palace is more exciting. When the most dangerous move you have is something you charge for two turns, giving me ample time to guard against, and I have a full party full health heal on Morgana... the bit where you actually were hitting my party's weaknesses was scarier, and you only did that once, and didn't kill anyone.
EDIT:
WELL...
EDIT2:
Well, ok,
that was more intense! Still kinda just a rush to do raw damage but I had to be a lot more careful with swapping people out, barrier spells, buffs, and using Concentrate, so... nice.

I've done Part Time Job, have Justice for Cats in my request list and haven't come across Many Faces yet. Think I'll wait until I've got both ID'd before taking them on if they come up soon.

So, I've just unlocked Affinity Reading from the psychic, Chihaya and just used it......I'm still a little confused on how it works though. So it basically advances my rank with a confidant up without needing to hangout with them?

Basically. It's essentially giving you those musical note affinity points you'd see in a hangout or rank up event without spending time with them. It's not an automatic "ready to rank up" option, though--if she says "your relationship should be able to get closer now" they will rank up the next time you hangout with them, but if she doesn't they still need more points to advance.

Not automatically but it gives you points towards the next rank and often 1 fortune is enough. Chihaya tells you if it's enough (something like you may become even closer now).
Ah, OK. Well I just did two requests but I'll be fine going in once more. I'm intentionally ignoring some confidants the first time around and it's the Summer holiday so I have a good amount of free time to waste.

I heard having a Persona in your party that's the same Arcana as the Confidant you want to level up helps too. Had Ann & Yusuke both at level 8 and had to use it like 4x time to get them to level up.

This has been the case since P3. That's why the MC always mentions that a specific Persona he's carrying will help him get closer to the person he's about to interact with.
Always bring a matching Persona when meeting with a confidant.

Then you're not blocked by what I thought you were. What rank are you with Sojiro ? He's just very slow to rank up until Rank 5 and you have to make coffee at one point to advance his link so try that. And you can't rank past 5 until after Palace 4.
I'm on 8/19 and haven't started Fortune yet. Will I be able to get the good skills from that confidant if I start now? Bit worried about how much time I have left.

Yes. Its possible to do almost everything important in 1 run even without any fortune use at all, though it's very close time wise (you have to decide on some minor ish stuff to miss out on, like some of the Hawaii scenes or some of the room items or catching the Guardian, etc and you won't get to see all the post rank 10 scenes)
Fortune just makes things easier / frees up extra time. I ended up spending my last night on my first run doing my own laundry since I'd run out of things to do.
I got the last confidant (except Fool) up to level 10 on the last possible day only thru heavy use of the Fortune bonus points. I pretty much used it every chance I could once she was at rank 7.
